  1. quote:Originally posted by rut: I really feel that Canada and the USA are like brothers. I would defend Canada as if it were my own country. I am so vary glad to hear someone say something like that. As of late, I've been getting the feeling from all the NGs I read and public opinions that the general 'American' consensus is that Canadians should just shut up, do what they're told and be glad that the U.S. hasn't invaded us yet. Bush doesn't help either. I remember when he thought our P.M.'s name was 'Poutine'. The accident that happened recently was a tragedy, but not surprising. Not because of incompetence or such, but because it is war - it's a volatile environment by definition. I think the technology is so advanced and the press coverage so dramatized that people are beginning to expect that 'accidents' such as this are not supposed to happen; like getting food poisoning from your Big Mac or something. Look at the Persian Gulf, didn't the U.S. take more casualties from friendly fire than from the enemy? If I recall that ratio was something like 1000 to 1 too. Back in Vietnam, 10 enemy casualties to one ally was considered good. Maybe people are starting to forget what the true meaning of war is. I'd like to think that most Canadians haven't developed any sour grapes over this and that, given the choice, we'd rather it be our troops that suffered casualties instead of our troops making the mistake. That's part of the understanding when you join the military, to take those risks and offer to make such sacrifices. MajBach You can't have everything, where would you put it?

About the time and effort you put in for these quilts. I don't recall you getting the recognition you deserve. I'm not much of a sewer - well, I can apply duct tape to a hole in my pants, but I digress - I do have an appreciation for how much work is involved in making a quilt. Just wanted to let you know that it doesn't go un-noticed. Kudos to you for all your hard work and generosity! Maybe we'll all get together and make you some duct tape oragami to show our appreciation. MajBach You can't have everything, where would you put it?

  6. I went ahead and emailed several geocachers from various areas where we need volunteers - Yukon, NWT (what's it called now?), N.B, N.S., P.E.I. & N. Alberta. I think it would really be awesome if we got signatures from every province. Interestingly, all the caches in the Yukon and N.W.T. belong to people who have not found any caches, but have only placed them. None of the caches up there, except maybe one, have any logged visits either. Maybe we should send one square to Yellowknife and one to Whitehorse and hope someone will set up an easy urban cache to allow those cachers in the area to sign it. Same goes for P.E.I. I imagnine we won't have any problems getting volunteers for the other maritime provinces and remote areas. MajBach You can't have everything, where would you put it?

My sentiments exactly. Unfortunately... Food and Copyrighted material are forbidden in caches, as set out by the rules in Geocaching.com. As much as I would like to trade songs, maps, etc., and can see it someday giving Geocaching a black eye. Don't do it, man! MajBach You can't have everything. where would you put it?

I don't think keeping the caches updated is to important, but I'll do it for reference anyway. I'll also try seeing if I can update the file such that the map above constantly updates, instead of constanly posting and updated map. Actually, why don't I start a new thread just for the map and we can keep this thread running. I've put the names of the volunteers on the new map and changed the colours of the caches themselves for contrast. If people want to give me their names, I'll update under the city. We can comment on how to divvy up the blocks as the map progresses on the new thread. MajBach You can't have everything. where would you put it?

Sounds to me like that’s the context you intended now. quote:I was not trying to say that it was the cache placers problem if food or such was placed in a cache was your problem Nor was I. Since I’ve never placed a cache, I wouldn’t even be thinking along those lines. The problem is , as you stated “if someone is caching with their kids I'm sure they will have the common sense to watch what their kids tarde”, there seems to be a lack of common sense. This is a problem for all of us in that it can cause caches to go missing, it can give Geocaching a bad rap publicly, it can be dangerous, it can lead to legal issues and it can lead to an endless stream of daily threads focusing on ‘cache stashes’. It often seems to be our problem to educate some 'newbies' on these issues - based on how frequently this problem arises - when I do not feel it has to be. quote: The statement was exactly what it said, poeple who are not used to being in the outdoors are not aware of how sensitive animals are to scents and many people who start Geocaching do not always read the helpful FAQs As was my reply. It would be fairly easy to get people to read and agree to a guide to finding/placing caches. Although still no guarantee, at least one-step closer. Your statement refers too all non-permitted items in a cache (i.e. alcohol, drugs, copyrighted material, food, etc.) and not just food. I was addressing all of them. I do not know what you meant by how I 'proved my point', since I proved nothing. I did use an analogy to demostrate that others shouldn’t have to cease placing pocketknives and the like in a cache because some parents don’t want their kids to find them. If it’s permitted within the guidelines and FAQs, then it’s permitted, period. quote: I in now way implied or stated that this is the problem of the cache place Who said that you did? My response focused on a solution to the problem of unawareness amongst some Geocachers. You simply stated the well-known fact, i.e. problem MajBach You can't have everything. where would you put it?

  23. Cliffy and 300 mag are probably the best two to divide up how many blocks go to each area. Shouldn’t be hard if they go by the dispersal pattern of caches throughout the country. It would be especially nice if we can cover every province and territory. Summer being here soon should make it prime time to get signatures. I’m definitely for limiting signatures to Geocachers as well. Your idea for getting blocks signed sounds like a lot of fun too. Seeing as there are quite a few cachers in my area, a cache event sounds great. I also think placing blocks in a cache for a couple of weeks in more remote locations would allow those in less populated areas time to sign. I spend a lot of time north of the southern urban areas in Ontario every summer. It would be nothing for me to plant a cache with blocks in it further north for others to sign. I also like the suggestion of a draw for those who volunteered to get the blocks signed to receive the quilt (biased – ha ha). Seriously, ten people are hardly enough to cover the country lest it take a long time to get signatures. Taking a quick look at the entire country, I’d guesstimate we need at least 40 people divided up based on the area of the province they reside in. The blocks would have to be divided further based on the number of caches in that area. I’d volunteer for helping out on how to do this (maybe that’ll mean I can put my name in the draw twice!). Anyhow – sounds exciting no matter what’s decided. Thanks again for doing the real labour! MajBach You can't have everything. where would you put it?

That's what makes a TRUE pilot! That dern GPS thing is gonna make pilots wimps! Kinda takes the 'fun' out of it, eh? My cousin is left seat on a '47 for Cathay. Everytime I see him he does nothing but complain about the job. I'm twice as happy in the bush making one tenth the money. A GPS can come in pretty handy however when flying up in sparsely settled areas in N. Ontario. The only nav aids up there are often an NDB fix on a lightning bolt coming from a CB that no FSS had any idea was 5 miles in front of you. MajBach You can't have everything. where would you put it?
