  1. gbod, after you turn on the etrex go to the satelite page. Click the options menue button scroll down to use with gps off, this will turn off the satelites. Click the options menue again and scroll down to "new location" another menue will come up Automatic or use map. Click on use map. A map will come on to the screen and you can move the pointer to San Diego, CA. Then look up the exits from there. Ron
  2. I watched X2 today with my son. At one point Storm called wolverine. I think that the radio she used said Garmin. Did anyone else see it? Ron
  3. I have never seen the video but I heard that the video does not have much value. The etrex is a easy unit to learn. Good luck. Ron
  4. When I bought my Camo etrex these were the differences. 1- The yellow had 1536 track log points. The camo had 2000 track log points. 2- The yellow did not have the Hunting/Fishing calculator. The camo Etrex did, but not a big deal. 3- The yellow did NOT have the Celestial Information Page. The camo DID. This was the main reason I picked the camo. I don't know if they updated any of that stuff with software updates but those differences are still what Garmin is listing. Ron
  5. That is what I am talking about. I wanted to look up a camp ground in either roads and rec or topo. I could not find a way to look up stuff besides cities. Ron
  6. I got one! When I got mine the yellow did not have the moon page or the hunt and fish times. I went with the camo because of the moon page only. Besides I don't like yellow. Ron
  7. When I look up points of intrest in my GPS I get lots of them. Man made, Waterfalls, cemeteries, beaches, camp grounds. Shouldn't I be able to see those points of intrest in my computer? I would think they would have to be loaded from the softwear some how. Ron
  8. I have Topo and Roads and Rec. I was trying to look up on my computer the points of intrest. I know I can do it with my gps but I was wondering if I could do the same with my lap top? All it will let me look up is towns. Ron
  9. I have a friend that has a vista, and I have a camo and a legend. My computer recognizes all three. I did have a problem once when I did not get the plug in the back just right. Is it possable the cord is the problem? Do you know anyone with a cord you could borrow? Ron
  10. Peter, you helped! I had the Baud rate set at 9600. I thought that since it started at that rate that is where it stayed. I increased it to 115,200 and 8 meg went through in 12 min. Thanks. Ron
  11. My legend has 3.2 softwear and the mapsourse is 4.11 I can't figure out why it is taking so long? Ron
  12. I have a Etrex Legend. It takes me almost two hours to load 8 megs of maps. Am I doing something wrong or is that how long it takes? Ron
  13. 4dingdongz, The Tracks are the bread crumb trails your GPSR remembers. Lets say you have a trail you walk on a lot. You can save it as a track and use that track to navagate the trail. When you use a track it is different than a route. You can read more in your Manual starting on page 43. I like using tracks a lot. On the question about quick way point settings. Push in a hold down the click stick. This will give you a quick waypoint. Ron
  14. I think the brunton solar units run about $40. That is the one that will run or charge a GPSr or a cell phone. I just might have to get one. Ron
  15. here is a web page for Brunton. Ron http://www.brunton.com/catalog.php
  16. Last year while I was working I went through a PILE of batterys. I wanted the ability to have a rechargable external source. After I read the post on external power sources I got to thinking. I got a cam corder 7 years ago and it quit. A year ago I took it in to have it fixed and they said it would cost as much as a new one. I said NO WAY! My wife went to throw it away and I said I want to "play" with it. I don't know yet how long the battery will last but it is rechargable, light, and small. I took the battery compartment out and figured out which wire was what with a tester. Then I cobbled together a case. The whole project cost me 8 dollars for the power hook up. I had the scrap plexy glass and screws. The battery still has everything hooked up so it will not fall out. I think it will be cool. Ron This is a side view. This is a front view. This is a picture of it hooked together. [This message was edited by Idaho Ron on February 17, 2003 at 02:20 PM.] [This message was edited by Idaho Ron on February 17, 2003 at 02:21 PM.]
  17. I don't know about Alan, but I do. I both work and play in the Mountains and the desert at night. The desert I work in is 8000 square miles. It has a total of 7000 people. A lot of the areas I work in are over 100 miles to the nearest town! I have worked there without my GPS but it REALLY makes it easier. Ron
  18. I am sorry if this has been covered but here it goes. I saw that the vista has a new release. What is the Beta? is it a test version? Should a guy wait until the real version? What is the reason to release it like that? Ron
  19. I got a legend for christmas and I have liked it a lot, and is very easy to operate. One thing that stumped me was the Max speed. I took a trip with a friend in his mini van and when I looked at the max speed after the trip it read 193mh. Anyone got a Idea how this happened? Ron
  20. I got a legend for christmas. If I load the topo maps will I erase the base map and all the info about exits, towns and citys? Ron
  21. The etrex camo IS waterproof to the IPX7 standard. Ron
  22. I have the etrex camo. I would like to be able to project waypoints using yards and or feet. Ron
  23. I saw this (Area Calculation) in the Garmin site for the venture and I have no Idea what it is. Can some one fill me in? Thanks Ron
