  1. OK, I bought my first GPS about 5 years ago. It was an early Magellan unit and when I found out about GC I decided to quickly move up. At the time the Garmin Etrex Venture was a bad boy and I paid a pretty penny for it. Since then I have a GPS on my boat (lowrance), a Lowrance Ifinder (although a great mapping unit I dont like it for GC) and a Pocket PC device in my car. Here is my question. If money wasnt an object, what is the best unit I can buy for "geocaching". Like I said, I dont like my ifinder for caching. My venture wont communicate with my computer anymore and I want an update. Is color necessary? I know in fishing it doesnt add any benefit. What about battery life, size, etc. Please help!
  2. I may be wrong about the rebate,it looks like all the models above the venture have a rebate. The Dodd Family

  4. The rebatecovers all the modelsthat are WAS capable. That is the main reason I bought it. Mapping is just a pain in the butt for Geocaching. Let there be some sport. I spent an extra 30 minutes going around a pond I didnt know was there just yesterday and enjoyed all 30 minutes of it. Good luck and at least youve decided on a Garmin. Howell Dodd The Dodd Family

  8. Hi, I bought a Pioneer used back in March. I soon found out about Geocaching and tried it out. I found my first one without a problem. Then i never found another one. There are a couple of reasons this unit is way outdated. First of all, your coordinates are listed two different ways on a Pioneer. HourHour, MinuteMinute, SecondSecond(XX.XX.XX) or HH.MM.MinuteMinute. Make sure you have it set on the latter. The reason is the last two numbers need to be a fraction of 100 instead of 60. the Coords you will get might sa 97.55.97 and that wouldnt be possible on a HHMMSS setting. You can however divide the number by 60 and figure it out on your own. the second reason this unit is outdated is that it "only" gets you to HH.MM.MM which can be 40 feet away from the cache in any direction. the newer Units have HH.MM.MMMM which will put you on a beach towel. Another reason is that it isnt WAS enabled which is a whole other story you can read up on. Have fun but I wish I had gone out and spent the $169 on my Garmin Venture first rather than get dissappointed when I couldnt find it. Hal Dodd Texas The Dodd Family
  9. This unit is 3 years old and has served me well. I received a new unit for my anniversary and simply dont need two. I'll take $40 plus shipping if anyone wants a good unit at a low price. hal The Dodd Family

  16. I just bought a used GPS unit. It was made in 99. It doesnt report a coordinance that has 3 digits after the decimal. It reports in seconds. I understand that this wont get me as close as a newer one but am not ready to make another investment just yet. If the coordinance of a cache is 32.006 does that mean my coordinance would be 32.00. I guess my question is how do I calculate a 3 digit coordinance to a 2 digit second reading. The Dodd Family
