1. Sorry I'm late to the party. Curious about how to mark a trackable found. I released a bunch and they seem to be missing. Either truly lost or from human error on not properly tracking. Should this just sort itself out over the course of gameplay??
2. I own 50 trackables related to a project. I have created two lists of all 50 using the image generator and design: https://joshuabruce.com/moms-road-trip/#trackables I'm curious about the key for the icons in the bottom right corner - can't seem to find it - keep be hiding in plain sight like a cache. Gray smiley - I'm assuming means I have it. Color smiley - means someone else has it. Gray cube - ???????? Color cube - means it's in a cache. Question mark - means it's been marked missing. Any other I'm not aware of??
3. Wanted to thank everyone for the help and ideas! I started a project thread, which I think is okay. Thanks again! Happy caching!
4. Thank you everyone. This was most helpful! I started a project thread...I think that's legal?? Thank you again! Happy caching.
5. This will be a very terse summary; however, the (link removed by moderator). My mother passed away March 1st, 2019. My sister coordinated services held March 16th, 2019 in Hobbs, NM. This project is a tribute to her. Mom left a car and loved traveling, even short distances. My sister and I would like it closer to us. Therefore, mom will get two more road trips, the one I’ll be taking her on as I travel back to Nashville, Tennessee and the one to scatter her ashes. My mother had a few dozen shells at her passing. During the memorial service we asked attendees to take a shell. By the ned of the service, there were 50 or so remaining. I converted those shells into hitchhikers on 50 trackables I own (see attached - only ~20 have what I started calling turtle shells because they're not all boxes). Each trackable has a goal, some more elaborate than others and, in a couple of years, we'll see how many can make it back to the Pike's Peak area in Colorado for the scattering. I have made it from Seminole, Texas to Austin. I was thinking I would start heading toward Dallas today to visit the Dr. Pepper Museum - then I remember it was Sunday and they're closed. So, gonna update the project and register the rest of the trackables instead. This thread will serve as a place for everyone (including me) to communicate around the project for now. List of trackables (Link removed by moderator) Flickr photo album Hashtags, if you're so inclined: #hido, #hidokd, and #hidoadventure - for better accessibility you can also title- or camel-case the words: #HiDo, #HiDoKD, and #HiDoAdventure - these aren't reserved to only this project, any adventure is good. ps. Thank you to the helpful folks in the forum who answered my questions and offered advice as this was being setup.
6. Awesome! Just to make sure. When an authenticated user goes to my profile, they will see the TB group - just like I can? (Each one has a story associated with it and I would like those interested to be able to see the full story without having to dig.) I tried the following from this help center page (https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=41&pgid=166): <img src="http://img.geocaching.com/stats/tb.aspx?guid=9e7eae30-86ee-40c5-a1e9-035a5483bab4”> I placed the above in my About section, which should be this TB: https://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=8160905. However, when I view my profile, I get an image not found icon. Looking at the code, it appears the code is being altered on save (specifically the %E2%80%9D%3E at the end). This is confirmed by removing that part in the image attribute and hitting enter - the trackable badge appears. Defect?? If so, what's the best way to notify someone??
7. @hzoi: Would you be willing to help me see this through the eyes of a user other than me? https://www.geocaching.com/p/default.aspx?tab=trackables#profilepanel - I can see my TB group on my profile, not sure if there's a way to make my profile public or not as I cannot view it when unauthenticated. (I don't usually do much with the website and still getting oriented.) https://www.geocaching.com/track/search.aspx?tx=dd9c578d-bee3-4ca2-8397-8ddd9bd2f87c&o=1&uid=72b2976f-3b08-45b9-92f4-e739ea4e9ee7 - It looks like this filtered search will work. When I view it as an unauthenticated user I can see the list and there are three pages of results. Is that what others see? @RuideAlmeida: Nice! Do you know, does the TB need to be dropped to watch it? I saw the watch list instructions but might be missing the actual link to say, "I want to watch this." I have five activated and zero dropped.
8. Sorry if this is a repeat, my search-engine fu might not be strong tonight. I have 50 TBs. They are all related to a tribute project I'm putting together. I'm curious if there's a way to create a single page that lists all of them?? I created a list but it seems to only be for caches. I read this part of the manual and it seems to only be for placing the TBs on my website, which is also helpful: https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=41&pgid=166 I'm wondering if I can do it on Geocaching.com itself. Given the number I'm not sure I want to embed them into a TB detail page.
9. Design was approved! Used @kunarion's (didn't know we can tag people) mention of a remembrance. So, the front is a standard Geocoin with the trackable ID + "track at" language. So, if the box fails, the baggy fails, the shell disappears and so on, still have the token and remembrance + the trackable page, obviously. Now to design the page, print, laminate, and finish the packages. Thanks for the feedback and information @kunarion and @cerberus1!
10. Thanks! I freely admit I don't know how this works in reality. However, I'm pretty sure I understand it from the book learnin' perspective. If a shirt or a sticker or a lego can be a trackable, why not a box? Travel Bugs are often attached to other items; so, having the trackable, which is really the ID, connected to a shell, doesn't seem too far fetched. As for the term "cacheable" - pretty sure I made that up. If I wanted to leave a box somewhere with a shell in it and never have it move - it would become a cache - maybe a travel hotel or something. However, if I want the box to be moveable it has to be able to be put into a cache - cache-able - able to be cached. Again, pretty sure I made up the term, it was late and I didn't want to hit the glossary. Direction I'm going as I iterate is I think there will be: 1. "smalls" - shell + tag for details go to GeoCaching.com (all in a baggy). That way some can fit in some micro to medium caches. 2. "mediums" - shell + tag + maybe a bit more (all in a baggy) + some container (fabric, small box, and so on) that can fit in most pockets - this way the full trackable can be separated from the container and still be viable. (Kind of fitting in a macabre romantic poetry way.) Fits in medium to large cache. 3. "Larges" - shell + tag + maybe a bit more (all in a baggy) + a bit more sizable container. Still separable from the container. Fits in large caches. To kunarion's earlier point and the docs we could do: 1. Full trackable design submitted for custom tag: Baggy + shell + tag; or 2.the tag *is* the trackable design submitted; therefore, the shell becomes the hitchhiker attached to it, only given circumstance, they are "attached" by a bag instead of a dog-tag chain. Part of the point here is that I don't cache much. So, I'm counting on the community to help me help mom. And I'm hoping to create a wonderful experience for everyone involved. And, to your point, cerberus1, like any artist should know, I know as soon as I put this into the world all sorts of things can happen. Some could steal the box, throw the shell in a river, and use the trackable badge for kindling. And that's okay, that's life - impermanent. I have many other ways to remember my mother besides shells traveling the world in baggies - these aren't for me to remember her - these are for others to become aware of a woman I found to be an exceptional human being. I have faith that there is more love and compassion in this world than malice and incompetence. ps. For what it's worth, I would rather be able to show up at a cache randomly and find her there instead of actively look for her. pps. I like the checking in with her concept you mentioned. Maybe I'll mark some as collectible and people could do that.
11. Another set of fair points. Maybe I should look at this differently - again, still learning the language. Separate the shells into small, medium, and large as they are the physical constraint. Create the cacheable as a hitchhiker (??). Where the shell is the hitchhiker, the tag is the trackable, and the container is just that - like a car on a road trip. Some might just be a plastic baggie with the shell and trackable information - small. Others will be medium, roughly two inches cubed. And a few large.
12. Thanks Kunarion. Great questions. Yes, 50 boxes. About the size of a deck of cards or pack of cigarettes. So, it would definitely need to travel between larger caches. They were the smallest I could find that can hold the shell + words, including the travel bug language (thanks for the link, the image is way helpful). Are those tracking numbers only for Geocoins? I don't need the design, just the numbers for less than $5 a shot and to know that if I put them on there in a way that covers the bases you mention - like a sticker or engraving. The bulk, budget, and constraints are the toughest constraints but I'm staying flexible. I tried searching for remembrance tags and came up with various interesting things. Is there a link that helps me understanding that? The non-trackable will be the deep fallback. I'm trying to give this to more than just me. Leveraging the Geochaching infrastructure to let her friends and other family members to watch the trackables move. Thanks again! ps. I am considering a smaller container for some of them. Is Geocoin a generic term for a trackable? I was thinking it was literally a coin.
13. Sorry if this is a duplicate, I'm not that active when it comes to caching. Also, I'm going to be exceptionally brief. My mother passed away. She had a ton of small shells. I have roughly 50 left after the services. She loved road trips and stepping off the highway to check out oddball sites. I'm taking her on one more as I head back to Nashville, TN. Along the way, I would like to drop some travel bugs along the way. I would like to create my trackables and travel bugs and want to make sure I'm understanding the implementation details. The shells themselves can't take a travel bug tag (and the collective cost is beyond my budget); therefore, I was going to purchase the codes (50 = $75 compared to $300). I was going to put the code on a box; thereby, making the box the trackable. The box would contain the obituary, my eulogy, and, of course, the shell - and possibly some other details and logging tools, if they can fit (a cache within a cache so to speak). If I'm understanding correctly, I should be able to put the tracking code on the box, activate it, and all the rest and be just fine. Further, I should be able to change the goal for each trackable, if desired. Is this correct? Is there an easier way to accomplish the high level goal of my mother essentially continuing to travel the world via the shells and story afforded by the obituary and eulogy?
