  1. I do. Not only do I fear them, I actively dislike and aviod them. Especially when they come in plastic encased slabs packaged as individually wrapped singles. I think it's a good idea to stay away from anything that markets itslef as a processed food product. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  2. Growing up near Pittsburgh PA, the home of Heinz, ketchup was the only acceptable option. Ketchup was, and still is, the all purpose condiment. Heinz is the original producer of the modern ketchup. Catsup was originally a different product created to compete with Heinz ketchup. Now nearly all manufacturers call their tomato paste based condiment ketchup. The government even has regulations for what the ingredients of ketchup are. For your reading pleasure. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  4. Is a water table similar to a water bed? I don't understand this use of water table either. quote:I paced off the site and have a feeling that it's under a sidewalk built in 1986. The description places it 10 inches above ground and 3.5 feet above street level. That must be one tall sidewalk. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  5. I don't find that description very confusing once I see the bridge orientation. The disk should be along the southern edge 48.8 feet west of the east end. Since the disk hasn't been recovered since it was monumented in 1942 I would be more surprised if you did find it. Many things may have happened to the disk to make it vanish, including construction on the bridge. The square may be in the place that the disk is supposed to be, but it is not the marker described. So I'd count this as a not found. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  7. The wooden stakes with streamers may have been there to mark somehting that had been surveyed, but they are not witness posts. Witness posts are more permanent and have more information on them. I've seen two variety of witness posts, old metal ones and newer fiberglass ones. Both types can be seen in my last foto of this log. Both types say "survey marker" and "do not disturb" and have contact info for the NGS (or coast and geodetic survey on older ones). As for what you found in the middle of those stakes, I have no idea what it is. A marker of some sort, possibly for a future construction project. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  8. Yes, that's definately a find. You can see the disk and it matches the official description. With good binoculars or a telescope you could probably even read the station name off the disk. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  9. Sounds like some vandal got to the disk. Don't assume that it has been reported destroyed. By NGS standards I don't think it has been destroyed. They seem rather picky about labelling a marker destroyed. An updated description indicating the vandalism may be necessary, but it's not destroyed. If the designation had been removed, how do you know which benchmark to search for? And are you only using the search here at geocaching.com or have you tried the NGS datasheet search? The search here filters the results to not show certian marks (ones reported destroyed and the like). The NGS search shows all entries, regardless if they still exist or not. You may have better luck there. Or perhaps it is one of those survey markers that is not listed in the NGS database. Many other organizations place survey disks that are not reported to the NGS. Maybe the one you found is from one of those organizations. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  11. quote:Originally posted by Rubbertoe: quote:Originally posted by brdad:My pre-caching definition of the word meant to create an obvious trail by clearing brush and branches and any other debris. But in these forums "bushwhacking" appears to be used often for not using the same trail as the cache placer intended. There must be another word for this than bushwhacking? Well, I consider it more like your first definition than the second... when I say "bushwhacking" I mean that someone has created a new trail, by cutting or trampling down the plantlife in the area leading to the cache. Odd, I've always used "bushwacking" as a description of going through areas that have no trail while not creating a trail for others to follow. I have cut trails with machette and chainsaw (in an approved areas of state forest) but don't consider that to be bushwacking. To me the whole concept of bushwacking has nothing to do with any trail, if you're on a trail or creating a trail then it's not bushwacking. I generally try to aviod bushwacking as much as possible when caching, hiking, and mountain biking (especially when mountain biking). I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  12. I don't have the NG Topo software so I may be mistaken. The NG Topo software is basically the USGS 1:24000 and 1:100000 quads all stiched together. They don't have many local trails or new trails on them. However, NG has the mapXchange section going on where you can upload/download trails in your area. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  13. There are several varieties of geocoin floating around. They are things that individuals or groups of cachers have had made and they distribute them through caches. Do a search for 'geocoin' here and a couple dozen threads turn up. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  14. quote:Originally posted by KD9KC:Circular polarity sense is unknown, may become appearant when I have time to trad the whole article. Not sure if it matters in any case?!?! I have seen instructions for building a home made gps antenna before. IIRC it was a quad-helix antenna design for recieving right hand circular polarized waves. Polarity matters a great deal to antennas, a LHC antenna will have very poor reception of a RHC signal and vica-versa. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  15. quote:Originally posted by kdkk17:how do you go about it?..and also..do i have or can i get a copy of the basic map that came with my unit for the puter? First you need to get some software to load and display tracks. GPS Trackmaker is one such program that seems to work well. Power up and connect your Legend to the PC with the data cable that came with it. Run GPS Trackmaker and select Interface->Garmin Interface from the menu bar (or push F8). Click on the product id button and make sure it finds the Legend. After the GPSr is id'ed you can download waypoints, tracks, and routes. Exit the interface console and it should all be displayed on the screen. That's one way to do it. Probably the cheapest since GPS Trackmaker is freware. An alternative is to purchase one of the many commercial mapping programs compatible with Garmin units that will display tracks, routes, and waypoints. As for the basemap, why would you want a copy of it on your PC? There are much, much better maps available than the basemap. Even the free ones online are far superior to the basemap of the Legend. 19. quote:Originally posted by Z-71:I just found GPS TrackMaker at http://www.gpstm.com/ It looks like it imports BMP, JPG, and GIF files and lets you put tacks and waypoints on them. I have that and use it some. When importing maps make sure that you have them aligned with north-south being exactly vertical. If it is not then the scaling will be off because gpstm doesn't rotate the map images. Specifically, downloaded DRG topo maps will need to be rotated using another program before importing into gpstm. My biggest problem with this program is that my computer's too slow and doesn't have enough memory. Maybe I'll use it more when I get a new computer. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  20. I've logged 2 markers on bridges of major highways. In both cases I was able to approach the benchmark from below the bridge. I've passed up on several more interstate bridges because the only way for me to approach would be along the highway. I'd rather not find the disk than risk an accident by stopping and walking along the highway. Now as to the original question in this thread, they are most likely survey disks for the state DOT or some such agency. State agencies like that tend to have a network of survey markers that may or may not be part of the NGS database. You most likely found those markers. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  21. IIRC geocaching.com uses the CD version of the NGS benchmark database. Not all survey markers in the US are in that database, many people find markers that aren't listed. I don't know if the Disney marks are included or not, but it would not surprise me at all if they are not. Unfortunately if you can't find it listed in either geocaching.com or the NGS database then you can't log a find here. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  24. I almost never get pop-up windows of any kind. I use the web filter Proxomitron to kill them on we pages. And I keep adware and spyware off my hard drive ith the above mentioned Ad-aware.
