  1. No, Garmin will not replace this as a warranty repair. There's no reason that they should. But that's not really the question you asked. To answer your question. Yes, Garmin will replace the case of your Vista. If you shell out the $125 flat fee that Garmin charges for any and all repairs of the Vista unit then you can get a completely refurbished unit. That does entail sending it in and being without it for about 2 weeks. It may be cheaper and easier to try one of the various plastic polishes like Meguire's sells. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  2. Reading through those directions it sounds simple enough to biuld. I just don't have an external antenna to use right now. When I get a job and an actual paycheck I'll try building one. I'd like to see pics of the one you built. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  3. The really scary part is when they (that's the nebulous they that's responsible for all the evil in the world) figure how to implant something like this in each and every one of us. Then big brother won't have to watch you, he'll just know where you are. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  6. I've looked into the re-radiating antenna for use with my Legend. The Tri-M/Big Brother model is one of the only ones I've seen for sale to consumers. It seems to be designed specifically for auto use and is appropriately equiped (ciggy adaptor, magnetic base antenna). This does make them less versatile since you need to have a 12V DC power supply. If you want to use it inside you can get something like this at Radio Shack. If you want it to be portable, then you need to carry a 12V battery with you. The only alternative that I've seen is to build your own. Heinrich Pfeifer has instructions up to for a home biuld re-radiating antenna for the eTrex line, also using a 12V supply. Dave Martindale has a description of a similar antenna system with using a 9V battery and one that only needs 3 V. Some day I may try building one of these systems. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

I recently found this benchmark that makes reference ot a "T" chiseled on teh curb. I was able to find the T but it was so shallow and in granite so I couldn't get a very good photo of it. These chiseled references and benchmarks are tricky to find. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  12. View route online? I never tried that. Now that I have tried it I can't get it to work. After a very long wait the browser only gives me the message "couldn't connect to... 1/ The site may be busy or the web server may be down." Guess something's messed up with the way EasyGPS talks to Netscape7. No idea what the problem you're experiencing is. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  13. Waterproof is a tricky term. The eTrex line of GPSr are "Waterproof to IEC 529 IPX7 standards." This means something like waterproof at 1 meter depth for 30 minutes. Basically waterproof for accidental purposes, not for underwater use. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  16. All of those accessory functions are mostly useless. The Sun&Moon is the only one worth keeping. The rest just seem to be a waste of code. I wish I could delete them off the GPSr like I can delete apps off my Palm. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  17. Kodak, Olympus, and Sony all make very good digicams. I have an Olympus 3040 that I think is great. I had to send it in for a warranty repair and had no trouble dealing with Olympus tech. support and repairs dept. I highly recommend them Some things to consider or keep in mind as you shop about: How fully automated you you want it to be? Some of the simpler and cheaper point and shoot cameras give you no options for manually controlling the camera settings such as aperture, F stop, and focus. Digital zoom is nearly worthless. Optical zoom changes the image by physically moving the optics in the camera resulting in a cleaner image with no "jaggies" (pixellation). Digital zoom enlarges the pixel size to enlarge the image, causing severe pixellation. If you want zoom, get the largest optical zoom you can. How many megapixels? For online purposes the 1 megapixel cameras are more than sufficient. If you want to print out photos then higher pixel values will allow larger prints to be made before they start looking pixelated. What memory type? If you already have a device that can use a certain type of storage media you may want to get a camera that can share. Other than that I don't think there is any significant difference between types. Good luck finding what you want. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

I have been thinking of buying an antenna from GPSgeek on ebay and maybe trying to make a re-radiating thingy for my eTrex Venture. I've been thinking to do the same thing for my Legend. I've looked over these instructions but I wanted something more portable. The 9V battery solution sounds good. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  25. I do. Not only do I fear them, I actively dislike and aviod them. Especially when they come in plastic encased slabs packaged as individually wrapped singles. I think it's a good idea to stay away from anything that markets itslef as a processed food product. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
