When I was growing up what is now called ATM was referred to as MAC machine, with MAC being short for Money Access Center. The little kiosks and machines were plastered with big MAC signs and the cards were blue with MAC in big letters. My current ATM access card still has the MAC logo on the back of it. I'm not lost! 2. quote:Originally posted by Team Flushingrouse:. . . it's always named something like "geocaching.loc-7.asp" and EasyGPS says it's not a compatable file... I'm sure it's one of those so simple things... It is one of those simple things, simple enough that I can actually answer it. Just delete the ".asp" off the file name. Either change it in the save file dialog box in NS or by renaming the file after it's been saved. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  3. quote:Originally posted by 0x284C:Anyway, I downloaded some caches into the Vista w/ EasyGPS and couldn't figure out a way to attach any additional info. Is there a way to attach the name (without changing the alphanumeric waypoint ID) and attach the encrypted hint??? Nope. Unfortunately the etrex line doesn't have a description field associated with the waypoints. All you can do is change the name, but it's limited to 13(?) characters so that's not real useful. quote:How do others handle this - printouts/PDA's? Yes, and yes. Both printouts and PDA's are used by cachers. Some use a web clipping program to grab cache pages for PDA use. Charter members can use the pocket query option to get info onto a PDA. Others just print out the pages and go with that. Use whatever you want basically. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  4. quote:Originally posted by umc:They're all c. I once had a psych prof that actually gave a test like that. All of the answers on a 50 question exam were c. Surprisingly few people got a 100% on that test. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  5. What software are you trying to use? Possibly the settings within the software need to be changed. Garmin and Magellan both have proprietary formats that are incompatible and the software needs to be using the correct one. Or using a common format like NMEA. Another thing to consider is that no other programs are running that use the serial port. For some reason many programs won't relinquish access to the port even if they're not actively using it. So the port may be blocked. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  6. quote:for navigation purposes to calculate these points you must add or subtract 180d from both lat and long. Ummm, no. As previously mentioned, subtract the longitude from 180d and switch hemispheres and only switch signs (or hemispheres) on the latitude. Subtracting 180 from the latitude would put you completely off the map. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  7. Georgie is well within the range of the atlantic WAAS satellite ( #35 I think ). As mentioned, locking onto the differential information from the satellite can take several minutes. Try going somehwere with a nice clear view of the sky, especially towards the east where the WAAS bird is, and let it synch for 10 - 30 minutes. Eventually it should find the signal and receive diffferental info for all the other satellites you're seeing. Don't expect a huge improvement in accuracy though. Most people that have compared WAAS to non-WAAS location have observed only minor differences. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  8. When I first saw this title I though that it would be a discussion of the GPS TrackMaker program. It turns out not to be directly, but it is one of the programs that can do what you desire. That is, load a track from the gpsr, edit, modify, manipulate it, save it, and upload it to a gpsr. Once you save to a file can be transferred to other computers and gsprs. It can also display tracks on loaded maps as well as deal with waypoints and routes. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  9. I'm not sure about ones that are permanently underwater, but I know that there are a number that exist along the coasts below the high tide level. A while back there were some pictures here showing one of these tidal benchmarks at both low tide and high tide. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  10. I'm using NS7. Plus I have a web filter and firewall running. The firewall shouldn't be a problem, but the web filter filters the header info. Specific to this problem is the fact that it removes the referring page data. It's not really a big problem, just an annoyance. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  11. quote:Originally posted by Web-ling:Just as long as THE TOE doesn't start dancing. The bananas are a little annoying, but THE TOE would be downright scary. SHHH! Don't give him any ideas. The dancing 'nanner with the geocaching lollipop is disturbing enough. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  12. Great list Jeremy. I wanted to see if any were near me so I put them on a Tiger map. If you want to wait for the download of large tiger maps you can check these out: USA overview NE concentration The blue marks are the 6 that Jeremy linked to, the rest are the others on his list. None of them are near to me, but some of you may have one in you area. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  13. From the announcements forum: quote:Hopefully you'll notice (and appreciate) a more seamless integration between the forums and the Geocaching.com site. Logging in while visiting the forums will now redirect you to where you were last. Jeremy Irish Since this change has been made I've been getting an error message when I first connect to the forums from the geocaching.com front page. When I'm already logged in to geocaching.com and hit the 'discuss geocaching' link I get transferred to the forums main page without being logged in to the forums. When I hit 'log in' on the forums page I get an error saying "Redirection limit for this URL exceeded. Unable to load the requested page." If I return to a geocaching.com page and hit the 'discuss geocaching' link again I get transferred to the forums and logged in to the forums. Anybody understand what's going on here? I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  15. That's what "8 1/2 RAILS EAST OF THE BRIDGE" means. I was looking in totally the wrong place for the benchmark then. I may have to go look for that one again now that I know. The mark should be about 300 feet east of the bridge, give or take 50'. Not at all where I was looking. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  16. In Pennsylvania the 'caching community is working with the state parks and DCNR to formalize the permission process for placing caches on state land. It seems to be going well so far with the officials listening to the concerns of the geocachers and working with them to make acceptable guidelines. If you want a lot to read check out these two threads from the NE forum. PA permission 1 PA permission 2 I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  17. As mentioned above, the EPE/accuracy reading on your GPSr is an approximation of the error in position. The calculation of which is very complex, involving the positions of the satellites, time of day, multipath delay, atmospheric conditions, amount of visible sky, surrounding landscape/architecture, position of sun and moon, which hand you hold the gpsr in, the flight path of the african swallow, and the flapping of a butterfly's wings somewhere in Asia. Well, maybe not all of those, but some of them do contribute to the EPE. Sometimes you just get lucky and everything aligns just right to yield a low EPE. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  18. quote:Originally posted by GOT GPS?:What may need to be done is to stretch the battery springs a little bit. I have had to do that to minimize the shut-offs. I had a bad case of the 'battery bounce' problem when I first got the handlebar mount for my MTB. Stretching the springs a little (be careful not to break them) and that helped a bit. Another thing I've done is add some padding in the battery compartment to help hold the batteries still. I used double sided tape to secure thin strips of foam pipe insulation inside the cover. I cut the insulation so it was only a few millimeters thick but it still takes a little force to attach the battery cover now. So far it has worked well, no auto power - off since I did it. 19. If you leave what you take isn't that the same as taking nothing? And if you take what you leave doesn't that mean you leave nothing? This is another one of those TNLN threads. I don't have a policy about such things. I go with what I feel like at the cache usually. Sometimes I TNLN, sometimes I move things from one cache to another, sometimes I keep things out of a cache, Sometimes I simply add things to a cahce. Mostly I shuttle items from cache to cache and contribute new items. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

This form was chosen to blend in (c.f. Ford Prefect, Hitchiker's Guide trilogy) so they can observe humanity in secret. The disguised aliens on the Penn State campus even have antennas sticking out of them to broadcast their findins back to the mothership. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  21. quote:Originally posted by geospotter:Guys, The SMPREP.EXE is packaged with many readers. Check your installation CD to see if it's there. Not with mine either. But since Centaur and I both have olympus cameras and probably with the same software that's no surprise to me. Panorama's can still easily be done without the 'panorama' feature being on the card though. It seems that all that the panorama feature does is adds info on the order in which the pictures are to be stitched. The camedia software is able to read that info and stitch them together automatically. But the camedia software will also stitch together pictures that aren't tagged as panoramas on the card, even able to stitch 2D panoramas. I don't think I'll bother trying to find a hack. 23. quote:Originally posted by Centaur:Well, I found the hack http://www.geocities.com/roberthaus/pan/ but it takes hardware I dont have.... Hmmmm.... Hmm, I don't have the right hardware either. I wonder if there's already a hack out there made for use with the camera. I don't have any form of smartmedia reader other than the camera. And as Centaur mentioned the camera mounts as a USB drive. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  24. quote:Originally posted by Centaur: quote:Originally posted by geospotter:BTW, you can hack any smart media card to become and Olympus 'pano-enabled' card. Ohh Ohh... How ? How indeed? I'm interested as well. I never really understood why it needs Olympus media to take panoramas. Other than to force users to purchase the vastly overpriced Olympus memory, that is. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
