  1. Not too sure I trust a site that tells me this: "For a person of your height (160 cm) the best pole (nordic_walking) is 0.0 cm long." I think I need a walking stick a bit longer than that.
  2. > By the way Gaarmin wanted to charge me $250.00 to replece the screen, $250!?!? When I had my screen replaced there was a flat refurbish fee of $99. What Garmin actually did was to take my unit transfer all the data to a different unit (I can only assume that it was a return or they have a pool of units that have been repaired that it was grabed from) and sent me a completely different unit than I sent in. I know it wasn't mine because the serial number was different and there were some topo maps loaded on it which I didn't have on mine. What the heck are they going to do for $250??
  3. Many have said what their Legend survived; I'll say what mine didn't survive. It fell off of the seat of a golf card onto the blacktop cart path. This it may have survived, what I think really killed it was subsequently being run over by said golf cart. It may have done better if the screen weren't against the pavement. I found it with a cracked screen and case, but based on the parts of the screen that were still functioning the guts were still working. When I connected it to a pc it all the electronics worked. So basically the screen was killed but everything else was good.
  4. I'm not sure if all Mapsource programs are the same, but in my Metroguide it's in the GPS tab on the left part of the screen. There's 5 tabs on the left; Maps, Waypoints, Routes, Tracks, and GPS. Under GPS there's a button labelled 'Start Tracking'. That does it for me. Since you've already established communications everything should work fine. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  5. My Dell Inspiron with XP will thy to use my Legend as a serial mouse if I boot up with it connected using NMEA format. It was quite annoying when the pointer would jump around the screen and randomly click on things. It also made it difficult to fix the problem, which was as simple as deleting the serial mouse entry from the device manager. I usually had to change to Garmin communication format to delete the serial mouse entry. Then it worked fine, even when in NMEA format. I had to use NMEA format with MS S&T to show location, I've since moved on to Metroguide and deal with Garmin format which doesn't cause problems. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  6. Elmo - you got a refurbished unit. I know, the same thing happened when I sent my unit in for repairs. They just transferred my waypoints and routes to a refurbished unit and sent it to me. I know it was a refurbished unit because it came with a bunch of topo maps loaded in the Texas area, plus it was a different serial number. That's probably how Garmin has such a fast turnaround on 'repairs'. Why make the customer wait while repairs are being done when you can send out a nice refurbished unit as a replacement. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  8. Add another with those frustrating login issues. I can typically enter the site and go to the 'My cache page' without needing to log in. But if I go to the forums I have to log in (and still get that annoying url redirect message). When I go back to my cache page and try the 'find nearest caches' with find filter on I need to log in again. It's a bit annoying that each of these pages needs a separate log in. It's only an annoyance with my DSL connection, but it is an annoyance. This occurs with Netscape 7 under both Win 98 and XP. At least now I know it's not just an issue on my systems. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  9. I remember having to do the same thing with Streets98 when I was using it. There was some additional software in a subdirectory of the CD that put a GPS icon in the control panel. I don't recall what the program was but I know it's where the communications with the GPS unit are configured and that it's required for location tracking is S&T. And, as you already did, the Legend has to be set to communicate in NMEA mode. Once you find the additional software and get it all communicating you may want to consider speeding up the refresh rate. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  10. My new LG phone has the same thing. What I understand is the gps antenna only recieves signals and location is transmitted over the standard cellular network. I have 2 options 'location on' and 'E911 only'. In the 'location on' mode the phone will tell the cellular network the coordinates of the phone when the network requests a Location Determination (LD). 'E911 mode' only transmits the location when E911 system request a LD from the phone. I have no idea how the distinction is made between the network LD and the E911 LD. One annoying thing is that I can't turn it completely off. The GPS LD feature is on all the time in one mode or the other. I don't necessarily want my location being broadcast to anybody who sends the right request to my phone. But I suppose it's good to have since 911 centers are actually using lat and lon coordinates now. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

I am unable to access any cache information. You beat me to that response by mere moments. I also cannot access any of the cache pages. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

(BTW, I make logic and memory chips at Intel) Wow, and I though I had it tough trying to position things on the sub-micrometer level. Down there at the angstrom level you're dealing with individual molecules. I didn't realize that you built circuits one molecule ar a time. For those that are unfamiliar with the terms, a micrometer is one millionth of a meter and an angstrom is one 10 billionth of a meter. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  13. I thought that way once too. I strapped my Legend to my handlebar with foam and rubber bands and duct (or duck) tape. That worked fine for anything that didn't involve bumps. But since I was riding a mountain bike on singletrack trails there was a surfiet of bumps, rocks, and roots. After having the GPSr fall off several times (only to be saved by the lanyard that I tied around the handlebar), I ordered an official type bike mount. One year and a couple hundred miles later I'm glad I did. If you feel safe carrying your GPSr that way, go for it. But for my money I'll take the real mount. Either way, let me offer this advice: lanyard, lanyard, lanyard; use that lanyard as a backup in case the unit falls off. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  15. It's possible, but not easy. I've done it by saving into gpx format from Easygps, then inporting the .gpx file into MSExcel, deleting extraneous columns, saving as an .xls file then importing as a dataset into S&T. If anybody has a better method, I'd like to hear it. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  16. I just started working at the US Army's research lab that's developing systems for soldiers that improve situational awareness. I like Latvija's idea about facial recognition. I need that same type of help. My memory for names is abysimal. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  18. My Legend gets vertical bars of black, white (clear) and low contrast occasionally. It usually occurs after pressing one of the side buttons and will clear up if I apply pressure to the case from the sides near the buttons. I's just a bad connection between the circuitry and the display. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  19. I don't have a problem accidentaly dragging the pushpins around, mainly because I use the right click method Poindexter mentioned. My problem with moving pushpins arises when I try to pan the map. If a pushpin is selected and any of the arrow keys are hit the pushpin moves. I have to click somewhere else on the map to de-select the pushpin and then I can pan the map around. I'd like to be able to lock the pushpins so that I can don't have to mess with them before panning the map around. I haven't found a solution yet. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  20. Sounds more like the car adaptor cord than your gpsr. If it were the gpsr I think that the fuse in the power adaptor cord would blow before the auto fuse would. What's the rating of the 2 fuses? If your gpsr is causing the problem then the lower of the two will go first. My thought is that the adaptor has a lower rated fuse than the car indicating that the problem is in the adaptor before its fuse. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  21. MS S&T is not a very GPS friendly software. The only interaction that it has with GPSr's is to receive the NMEA data string and display it's location. Routes in S&T can't be uploaded to the GPSr as far as I know (at least I couldn't find anything about it). You can see lat & lon on the S&T maps by using the location sensor on the map. It's located on the toolbar under TOOLS >> LOCATION SENSOR. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  22. I've been using it for a couple of days with no problems. In fact it seems to acquire a position lock faster when first turned on than the previous version. I'm not sure where the extra memory comes from for the expanded track log, maybe the data is being compressed before it's stored. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
  23. When WAAS is enables the GPSR gets signals from the WAAS satellite (35 here in the east) that contains differential information for all the other satellites in the sky. Once the differential information is decoded for a given satellite the D appears in the signal bar. In order for WAAS to really be effective you need 4 or more sats with differential information for several minutes. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.

  25. Richard Petty Driving Experience puts customers inside cars. True, it's not during an actual race, but you can still get up to race speeds. Some day I'll actually do this. I'm not lost! I just don't know where I am.
