  1. Can you explain that one CD? I have registered with the appropriate agency and have access to the lists of benchmarks around but there was no cost to do this. In addition, if all I do is create a cache using offsets from numbers on the benchmarks, am I against GC.com? I am not quite clear where the vioation would be. Thanks
  2. Excellent!!! I had a look, but couldn't find any specific information. Is there any place online that states that the conservastion areas are free? Sounds like it would be a great time to do a group assult on GCPRND - Mountsburg Island Cache I. Anyone have a canoe or we use my blow up boats again like we did on the Determination cache. I don't know if it has been released to the public yet. This came from an internal email from the Ontario Southwest VP. June 6-14 is Customer Appreciation Week and this day is one part of it. I am sure info will be out to the public shortly but this is a "for real".
  3. On Sunday June 8, RBC is sponsoring something called "Gates Open" at all Ontario Conservation Areas and admission is free for the day. A great day to grab those caches that you refuse to pay admission to get! It is part of RBC's Project Blue Water which is a 10 year $50 Million committment to ensure those in Canada and around the world have fresh water today and tomorrow. www.rbc.com/bluewater Here is a link to a list of Ontario Conservation areas: http://www.ontarioconservationareas.ca/
  4. We're starting on the 24th. I am away for the long weekend. If you are free then, there are 4 of us so far starting from Niagara. Not sure yet how far we'll go...we're trying to hit 15km or so a day max for now just to get going.
  5. I can honestly say Greg that this section may be one of a few my knees regret. Maybe the plan at that point might be 1km a day!
  6. I see you are new to gc.com. Welcome to our world! You say you may be more into other things than geocaching...don't worry, you'll be addicted soon enough. Actually, you will find a good number of area cachers are big into photography too like myself, Fizbot, Northern Penguin, Res2100, and others. I'm sure I will be lugging my camera on the hikes. Email me through my profile and I will keep you posted on the hike dates. So far it looks like a few of us will be heading out on the 24th for leg #1. Mike
  7. Hi Ralph, I had thought about joining you guys on occasion but I just would not be able to keep up with you guys. My injuries plus my out-of-shapeness and it would never work. Maybe we'll be close enough at some point to see you guys on the trail! Mike
  8. I personally also like hints that say something like "bridge" or something similar that could mean anywhere on a structure (in this case). If the bridge is 100 feet long, I doubt that vague of a hint will help. Even a Magellan can get me that close!
  9. I use wap.geocaching.com all the time...used it yesterday even as I knew a cache was nearby while out and about but didn't have it in my GPS yet. While I agree its a bit of a pain, it takes less than 5 seconds to change the GPS to decimal degrees then another 5 back so that's no big deal. I just wish you could log into your profile and then when doing the search based on coordinates, have it only show those you haven't found (or allow you to choose all or not found). I hate having to scroll through a few pages just to find the one I haven't done within 30km. Regardless, its a small price to pay for a great convenience like that.
  10. Yeah, we've shopped and cached there before. I don't think the timing will allow that trip this time but maybe this summer. Love the Sony and Steelers stores at Grove City!!
  11. Hi all, We're in the Niagara area this weekend and will be crossing over from Canada on Saturday for some shopping. Any sugestions on a store with good selection of hiking/camping gear? Speciafically, I need a new pair of quality hiking boots. Thanks Mike
  12. I have decided to start my attempt at a Bruce Trail end to end starting in Niagara and trying to hit all the caches along the way. I am wondering if any cachers want to join me. Here are some of the points I need to consider though: 1) I have past injuries to my knees and feet so will likely need to start small...maybe 15 or so km a day...if you're a rocket hiker, I'll likely just slow you down...my goal is to get in better shape in part through this so hopefully as some of the weight comes off, I could do longer days 2) It would be best to drive in seperate vehicles, obviously, so we can park at each end of the planned hike for the day 3) I do not have every weekend free so would likely be able to manage a couple days at the end of May, one in June, a couple at the end of July, and am good for 3 of the august weekends. Once September hits, I am pretty free till the winter except for a couple weekends I would think the best folks to join me would be just casual hikers and geocachers out for a few smileys. Email me through my profile if you are interested. I would want to get started May 24.
  13. It actually says location unknown and travelled 0km. Not sure if that means the same as missing as you mentioned. I'm OK with that. As I recall when I did this last year, there was a way of setting it up as I have the 7yr Ammo Can coin. Maybe I'm not getting what you are saying but can you tell me how to get my other coins to show up as this one does?
  14. Can someone tell me if there is a way to add the geocoins I own but will always remain in my collection and not be circulated to my profile listing of geocoins owned BUT not have them show up as in My Inventory for purposes of placing into a cache? I have one that shows up that way now but don't recall how I did it as it was in someone else's inventory before and somehow we were able to switch it to my owned list but not show up in my inventory list. Basically, I want the icons to show up on my profile listing of trackable items owned but I don't want to accidentally drop them in a cache from a log I post. Thanks

    TAX TIME!

And of course, Helen, you and Chris declare your bottle winnings, right? You could deduct your GPS units right there!!!
  16. Check out My Geocaching Store; found here <moderator removed link>; all kinds of geocaching stuff. Sure you'll find something you'll like. Yeahhhhhhhhh....fairly certain this would be considered commercial plugging....the poster asked for a store in Toronto, not an online store, especially one that appears to be a few thousand miles away in Utah.
  17. Geocaching.com Google maps wants you to zoom in further than looking at all of Baffin Island, or it won't return any caches. I can tell you though, that there are only 19 caches in the whole of Nunavut, so I'd just look at them and see where they are. I'd post a link to the 19 caches in Nunavut (8 of which have never been found), but it doesn't seem to work for me!! Anyone know how to post that? Make a bookmark list of the caches, make sure you make it viewable (?) to all, then copy the URL at the top of the page. When you reply on this thread, click the little globe and paperclip button on the tool bar right above where you are writing and paste the URL there. That should work.
  18. Too busy getting soaked for 10 smileys.
  19. Many at the Toronto GEOBASH today were interested and purchased our new coin and it was suggested that I post in this forum in case there is anyone else interested as we do have a few left. First, here is a pic of our coin: The coins are $10 each. Landsharkz made the coins for us and the batch they kept back (100 coins) was sold out in 2 days. If you want a coin, let me know how many and your address and I will let you know the costs. If its within Canada, shipping for up to 4 coins shouldn't be more than a cople of bucks. Payment vi paypal. Please email me through my profile. Mike

    TAX TIME!

OK, here's the skinny... You could get away with it (anybody can unless you get audied..I doubt a $400 GPS will trigger an audit) as long as you have business income. Just because you are employed and want one to get you to work doesn't count unless your employer signs a T2200 form saying you have expenses for work. For deducting it, it depends on what CCA (Capital Cost Allowance) class you want to use as per what Keith was eluding to. Not all CCA items get depreciated at the same rate, nor do you have to CCA an item purchased in some cases. For example, you could consider a GPS as computer equipment which is class 10 and doesn't seem to have a minimum amount. No point using class 10. Use class 8 and CRA says that you only use this class for electronic equipment over $500. A general rule is that if is under $500, you just expense the item and don't bother depreciating it with CCA. In other words, as long as you didn't spend more than $500(before tax) then I would just call it an office expense and write it off the same year.
  21. BTW, you can also pick these up from Irene of geocite if you are at the Toronto Geobash this weekend or at COG Spring Fling in a few weeks.
  22. For those that have already ordered, in case you get them before Landsharkz has a chance to get the activation code online, email me through my profile and I will provide the code. Still have some of these left if anyone is still interested, though they are certainly going fast!!
  23. Sorry, we are a group of cachers that went together on these so we are looking to sell them all and recoup our costs. To be fair to the others, I couldn't do a trade.
  24. The coin is 48mm tall. Not sure of the width. Its the perfect size for all containers. Mike
