  1. I have just updated my 60CSx with the latest software version and now my custom POI's do not display at any zoom level below 800'. I would imagine this is coincidence, but they have disappeared of the map none the less.

When I select Find -> Custom Points of Interest, those POI's in the immediate area are displayed and I can navigate to them. When I switch to USB Mass Storage, I can see the POI.GPI file in X:\Garmin\POI folder.

    Any ideas?

    Software Version: 3.20

    GPS SW Version: 2.90

    Card Info:

    Maps - 702MB

    Misc. Space - .5MB (the POI.GPI file)

    Free Space - 265MB

Map points can be turned on at any zoom level, but you have to turn off auto zooming. Go to the "set-up map" page and find the POI, street name, land cover, etc page and set each one to the max zoom level you want. I have my "map Points" set to show up to the 3 mile range. You will be surprised at how many points will show up if you turn off the auto zooming. Also set the map detail to "most."

  2. I am getting into geocaching and the eTrex Legend looks to be around my affordability range as well as in stock in my area.

Question I pose is I am wondering if that is a good enough unit? Going by the Garmin website, it doesn't list the Legend in its Geocaching buying guide.

As opposed to going by Garmin's marketing dept., I wanted to pose the question to ya'll. Is the Legend good enough to get started with and if so, how long until I possibly "outgrow" it?

    Thanks,

    Harry

The Legend will work perfectly well for geocaching. One thing I've noticed here is the number of problems with the fancier gps units that the cheaper ones don't have. I use an eXplorist 200 and never have any trouble with it.

    Good Luck,

    Ray

Get the Legend. It has a very sharp screen, much better than a Magellan. I had both and returned the Magellan because of the low res screen. You can get a Legend at Walmart for $150 and always be able to take it back if you don't like it.

  4. I work for **RR. Ever since 9/11 every train crew receives an advisory with their track warrant that tells them to immediately report any suspicious activity on or near railroad property. Being in the control tower of a rail yard which is near a river, yard crews and train crews give me many of these reports in reference to the river bridge. Depending on how the crew describes the activity, I either report it to the RR police, or ignore it, because on any given day, and especially on river bridges, we always have trespassers. I would be more inclined to have the tresspaser removed for safety reasons, than as a terrorist threat. They walk all through the yard, climb in cars, and dangerously climb between cars, seriously risking their lives out of ignorance. I can recall only a handfull of times in over 40 years, where we arrested a tresspasser. I have personally contacted trespassers (without benefit of gun and badge) and have removed them by simply stating to them that they are trespassing, and if they will leave the property, I will not call the police. It works 99% of the time. It is rare for a trespasser to put up an argument, and even rarer for them to become agressive, unless you are talking about a rail yard near the Mexican border.

In my humble professional opinion, I would advise against placing a cache near a railroad structure but if you do, use a little common sense and don't put it on a bridge or tunnel, and definitely don't put your name in it.

I believe that 911 hysteria is what got HillWilly busted.

By the way, check this cache out. It was created by a RR Special Agent (policeman). It is right next to the tracks, although he didn't place it there. Ask him what he thinks?

  5. My Raid bug was taken from Cotton Pickin' Cache about 2 weeks ago, but I can't even e-mail the guy because his geo-id seems to be bogus. He left a scribbled note that was very hard to read, and said he was going to take it to N.M. His handle looks like Geallie Man, but I can't find anything like it when I try to e-mail him. It would be nice if we could run a search that would give us an alphabetical listing of all geocachers.

Not completely sure what you're referring to .. but if you log a find ... you get a happy face ... if you click that you didn't find it ... you get a frown ... now in addition to that there are the little smilie faces you can add to the text of your log ... but that's different. Is that the one you're refering to?
