  1. No problem - use any temporary needle you happen to have.
  2. if you have more than one email address, you may have them set up in some way that would repeat emails - I had one set up that way inadvertently for a couple weeks before I noticed that I was popping off the new address and also forwarding to another address. My email client was picking it up from two different pop accounts
  3. check out Sentimental Journey in Tucson I think you will be exprized by the overall coolness of this hide
  4. (Nice photo) I guess the best test of whether it will fly is to see if you can sell it. Good luck.
  5. I hae the same formatting problem - the old notifications were correctly formatted but the one I received today is decidedly short on LF ... What I got looks like this: In this email (from 10/26/2006 to 11/2/2006) ----------------------------- 1. Email Bot Maintenance 2. Instanotify Service Out of Beta! 3. Upcoming Events (21 total) 4. Recently Published Geocaches (34 total) Email Bot Maintenance ----------------------------- The gears on our old email bot finally seized up last week so we had to scramble to develop a new bot to keep you updated about new caches and events in your area. LoBot - short for Location Bot, is our new mail robot. He's still a little oily behind the ears but we'll be updating him over the next few weeks. If you have any comments or ideas feel free to post it in the forums. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=147765 Instanotify Service Out of Beta! ----------------------------- A Premium Member feature, the Instanotify service (almost) immediately sends an email when a cache has been logged. For each notification you choose a cache type, log type and radius to monitor. One popular log type is "published" which will notify you when new caches have been published near you. This can give you a (un)fair advantage over other "first to find" hounds. This week we decided it has been working well for long enough to remove the "beta" tag. Additionally we raised the limit on the number of notifications from 20 to 40, and added the log types "found" and "not found." Depending on the popularity of geocaching in your area we would recommend keeping your number of notifications low. http://www.geocaching.com/notify Upcoming Events (21 total) ----------------------------- 1. (GCYXTK) Geocky Adopt a Highway Trash Pickup 2006 #2 (Cache In Trash Out Event) Location: Kentucky, United States Date: 11/5/2006 Posted by: GEOCKY http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...ed-221eac4b615f 91.9mi SW (148km SW) 2. (GCYNGW) November 7th, "Maumee Style - NWOGEO <snip> Hope you can fix this as I am unlikely to struggle through this very often
  6. any time you find a cache page that has features you find interesting, check the page source. Most of the code you will see is generated for every cache page - search for strings "short description" and "long description" all owner-written html is in those sections.
  7. http://rumkin.com/tools/cipher/substitution.php there are online tools, but pencil and paper works fine for decrypting In addition to the substitution cipers that the link points to, there are a lot of other encryption methods discussed on this site.
  8. if you shred the aol disk first, and put it in an envelope or some such - you have some nice glittery confetti. That is all aol disks are good for - with the exception of a nice large fish sculpture I watched a friend making
  9. Gee, I'm not the only one! Actually, I find it interesting that the sheriff would want to know who plays the game - does he want to keep a special eye on these potentially dangerous geocachers?
  10. I have a chinese name-stamp that a friend gave me years ago. I started carrying it to stamp letterbox logs with, but have begun using it in any log I sign. Unless you read chinese, it is pretty much meaningless, but it is definitely one-of-a-kind since my chinese name is unique.
  11. "cheat" is an inoperative verb in geocaching - everyone plays a different game, hence different rules, hence no such thing as cheating Never assume that I am playing the same game you are
  12. do you know which brand of GPSr Eric the Red and Leif Ericson favored?
  13. if you want it to be a difficult find, you shouldn't make it easier - if anything, adjust the numbers to show greater difficulty than planned
  14. I don't always leave a FTF prize in a cache I place - but for a couple of my harder puzzle caches, I have - in one I left a $20 bill - not mentioned in the cache page - in another I have an unactivated TB tag that is as yet unclaimed.
  15. Wow, some folks are easy to disturb! I would probably put it on my watch list and take pleasure in seeing who found it and what their experiences are. (edited for spelling - which doesn't get done often enough)
  16. it hasn't happened, and if it does, my wife will probably be less than thrilled about it
  17. we are all on the same slide to the grave - anything we do to amuse ourselves in the meantime is enriching for us personally - but may not have any impact in the greater picture
  18. I have a pair in my gear and get 'em out when I am caching with a friend - so we can stay in touch if our search separates us - for instance if a trail diverges and it is not clear which branch will more closely approach the target. When I am alone, there is no point in using it.
  19. This kind of 'memorial' has become so common as to be nearly meaningless. Perhaps it would be better to think of something original.
  20. a method that works well for me is to simply make a bag out of camo mosquito netting and put the cache container in that. The netting gets weather worn and debris gets embedded in the mesh - the shape is not hard-edged with straight lines - et voila: pretty good camo.
  21. I usually trade something - and generally leave a sig item as well - if I find a sig item I don't have, I will take it. OTOH, this is not a hard and fast rule - if there is nothing that interests me, I take nothing - in such a case, I may or may not leave something - depending whether the cache is short on trade items or just short on things I find interesting.
