  1. I have been using my Garmin GPSMap 60C for geocaching, but haven't used it on the road in a couple years... as you can tell by my question. I see on Garmin's webpage that the City Select North America software is now discontinued? Do I have any options for getting an update for my current version 6? Thanks for your help.
  2. Thanks for the help so far, guys. I have a 2005 Kawasaki Mean Streak (hence the username). It's the sixth street bike I've had (I'm 25) and my first GPSr! I actually found out about geocaching through a small blurb in Rider magazine. It gives me a great answer when I want to take a ride and the better half says, "Well we can't just roam aimlessly, where are we going to go?!"
  3. I imagine this post should be in the GPS Units section... I'm looking for a sturdy, reliable motorcycle mount for my Garmin 60C. I've heard good things about RAM, and have been to their website, but couldn't decipher which of the million mounts they show holds a 60C. Do you have any suggestions? I've heard some horror stories about people returning from an ATV/motorcycle ride with an empty mount, so if there aren't any out there that are rock solid, I'd rather pull over to check my progress. EDIT: While I'm asking... are most mounts easily removable with no damage to the handlebar? I'll mostly be attaching the mount every now and then for longer trips but would like to leave it off some of the time. Thanks for your thoughts! --MeanStreaker
  4. I recently read a small blurb in Rider, a motorcycle mag, and figured it would be a great way to convince the wife to go riding more. Me: "Honey, wanna get the bike out?" Her: "Where we gonna go?" Me: "Who cares, let's just go for a ride." Her: "Nah, that sounds pointless." I just got my 60C last week and am still working out all the bells/wizards. Happy to report that all four of us (counting the two dogs) have found our first cache and I think we're hooked! --Mike P.S. The dogs are still hesitant to get out on the bike more
  5. I think the main roadblock in this case was my own supidity. I read the error log and should've understood it, but was so anxious to get going I tried disabling anything else that would be sharing the port and tracking them down before I let the error wording sink in. I think you did a good job, but I showed the error to my wife (who doesn't know the difference between interfaces) and she had no idea what it meant, so you might be on to something by being more explicit like you suggested about "Make sure you're using the USB and not....." for those that aren't computer savvy. Anyway, I appreciate your response and your desire to help. That goes for everyone on here by the way. As I was reading through the 10 pages of this GSAK thread, I was AMAZED at how much time/effort everyone, especially Clyde, has put forth to try and help users. Keep up the good work! It allowed us to find our first cache last night. I think we're hooked! --MeanStreaker
  6. Wow am I a moron. I swear I spent hours looking at what I did wrong, and as soon as I sent away that last message, I looked one more time at the Setup and saw that I didn't have the "Use USB" box checked. Hehe, well.... at least it didn't take too long to feel like an idiot in front of all you folks. Later, --Mike
  7. Hey everyone, this is probably some newbie mistake, but I don't know what's going on. I just got my new Garmin 60C and downloaded GSAK. I'm loving learning about the features, but I can't make it send waypoints to my GPSr. I, of course, installed the MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager CD and installed the drivers, so my laptop should be recognizing the 60C fine. In GSAK, when I go to GPS -> Send Waypoints... and click OK, I receive the error: GPS_Packet_Read: Time-out GARMIN: Can't init COM1 I've tried going to GPS -> Setup... and switching between my only two options, COM1 and COM3. I also read through all 10 pages of this thread and thus unplugged all other USB and modem cables, turned off my HotSync manager, and rebooted to start fresh in case another program was "hogging" the COM port like some suggested to an earlier question that seems similar but received a different error message. I'm anxious to get GSAK up and running so I can pay my registration fee. It seems like this program is worth 5 times the asking price. Can anyone help me out with what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, --Mike
  8. I looked around for quite awhile and couldn't find anything to beat the Amazon price for the 60C. I just placed my order. Thanks to everyone for your help! We're looking forward to receiving it!
  9. Just so I'm sure, the "autorouting" is available in the 60C and not just the 60CS, right? I also plan on keeping the unit in a pocket or sissy bar bag as I've heard too many horror stories about a handlebar mount giving in and losing your GPS.
  10. Thanks for the replies so far, folks. I appreciate you taking the time. I've been looking at the GPS V and Meridian Gold/Platinum units but am pretty ignorant on comparing/contrasting the features. I've been drawn to the GPSMap 60C since I've read such great reviews on this forum and GPSInformation.org about it being an "all purpose GPS" which is what I would like. As for the cost, I'm flexible and would easily spend a little extra if it's warranted. My reason for posting was to explore if I'd be just as happy with a GPS V or even something cheaper than that for general geocaching and mapping trips as I would be with the (seemingly) superior 60C for my novice purposes. Any more thoughts? Thanks.
  11. I've been reading posts and various reviews for about eight hours throughout the past two days and am now more confused than ever. I'm looking to buy my first GPS unit for geocaching but also want to be able to use it for motorcycle trips. After reading the many threads on buying... I thought I was sold on the Garmin 60C, but now the more I read the more I wonder if I would be just as well off with a lower-end model. I'm drawn to the 60C for it's features, especially the specific geocaching mode, but am hesitant since ~$350 for the unit plus ~$100 for the City Select software is more than I initially wanted to spend. Is there a lower-end model (or something that combines good mapping software) out there that I should be considering that has a specific geocaching mode (maybe that's not even necessary to record cache finds/details?) and is still good for mapping out mostly small trips and maybe a couple longer trips (multi-state) a year for less money than the 60C? I'd like to get trip info that avoids highways. Color is prefered, but only cuz I haven't seen many units firsthand and think it would help for clarity. I can't find anybody that carries anything other than the Legend in my area, not even my local Best Buy. Please know that I'd appreciate any responses even though I know you get a million newbs asking, "What's the best GPS for me?" Thanks very much for your time, --Mike
