  1. I experienced the same thing this morning when I was looking for caches in Southwestern US in preparation for an upcoming vacation.
  2. well I got a new laptop earlier this week and had no problem downloading and installing the little program you needed to upload geocaches to the GPSer...had to return the laptop last night because of a problem with it and replaced it with the same laptop model...and now (since the geocaching.com web site "update") I can't get that little program to run. I receive this message: The page cannot be displayed You have attempted to execute a CGI, ISAPI, or other executable program from a directory that does not allow programs to be executed. Please try the following: Contact the Web site administrator if you believe this directory should allow execute access. HTTP Error 403.1 - Forbidden: Execute access is denied. Internet Information Services (IIS) Technical Information (for support personnel) Go to Microsoft Product Support Services and perform a title search for the words HTTP and 403. Open IIS Help, which is accessible in IIS Manager (inetmgr), and search for topics titled Configuring ISAPI Extensions, Configuring CGI Applications, Securing Your Site with Web Site Permissions, and About Custom Error Messages. In the IIS Software Development Kit (SDK) or at the MSDN Online Library, search for topics titled Developing ISAPI Extensions, ISAPI and CGI, and Debugging ISAPI Extensions and Filters. So I switched to my husband's laptop (which I've been using for months to upload the caches)...and lo and behold I received the same message. So the problem is definitely with the geocaching web site. So not cool just before a weekend when you want to go caching.

  4. I suggest the OP plug those numbers in to google maps and see that they are where he wants to be. Those coords seem likely to be right because they put you in Brownsville, Vermont, near the New Hampshire border. The OP is from NH. Appreciate everyone's help. Regarding the above statement. Being that the coordinates should point to a location in Belmont, NH (in the center of the state), then something's wrong, as that is nowhere near Brownsville, Vermont. I'll phone DeLorme this evening when I get off work, to see what they have to say. Thanks again. (And everyone, please this is just a question about GPS coordinates, let's keep discussion civil, please. PJ
  5. I have a DeLorme PN-30...love the unit... but I need to reposition one of our caches that had been muggled. This is the first time I've used my PN-30 to establish a cache, and the coordinates I'm getting aren't stared geocache coordinates: N43'27.4025 W072' 28.3593 Can someone either tell me what these coordinates should be converted to so I can post them at Geocaching.com...or direct me the web site I can go to so I can do the conversions myself. (I've tried several conversion sites, but my coordinates don't seem to fit those parameters.) Thanks for the help. PJ (of PJ-FredX-Tuck)
  6. if stuff like this and the geocaches which are mistaken for bombs keep on making the news, all that will be left for us to find will be nanos, micros, and maybe small caches (not to mention any existing virtuals).
  7. Not counting the Northeast Geobash, it's happened twice to us (we only have found 125 caches total, and this happened when we had much less finds). Once in Salem, NH we met a man caching and the 2nd time was at Bear Brook State Park that time we joined forces with this husband and wife team (along with their dogs). One of the caches we found was a members only cache that we couldn't claim until we became full members ourselves. We did see someone parked at our cache last week (the had a vanity license plate) and I noticed the same plate in town later in the week but didn't have the opportunity to speak with them. PJ
  8. Hubby and I (minus Tucker) are planning a Canadian Maritime vacation this September. We would love to do some Caching on Cape Breton. We try to stay with difficulty of 2 and below and we really enjoy caches that bring us to interesting places. Can anyone offer some recommendations? There are so many up there it's hard to know where to start! Thank so much for your help.
  9. Oh just too too funny! May have to download that one for ha-has.
  10. Thank you!!! I've been looking for that song for the last couple of hours! pjm
  11. (before I start, I was conflicted whether to post this here or under the "Off Topic" area) This September my hubby and I (minus Tuck) will be vacationing in the Canadian Maritimes and doing a lot of geocaching while we are there. Recently I put together a little video (photos accompanied by music for my daughter ) and would like to do the same for our upcoming vacation. Anyone have any good ideas for a geocaching type of song I could use?
  12. Well we've found a lot of interesting ones...but this one is one I tell people about all the time, because I learned something interesting when we found it: GC7F33 - Summerless. Yes, it's a virtual (PJ ducks the flying tomatoes)...but hey, I liked it.
  13. In the past I'd print them as a PDF (have to bring up the map by itself and then print the map separately to PDF - for some reason the bigger map doesn't show up on the original web page). Then I'd piece them together (deleting the mostly blank pages-- there are usually one per cache log) before I print them out double sided-- but I'd do this at the office on the laser printer. To do this, you really need a full version of Adobe Acrobat.. just the Adobe Reader version won't allow you to delete pages. Lately though I'm making use of my Sony Reader (like a Kindle). I increase the font size to maximum then print to PDF,then copy the PDFs to my Reader, and view in landscape more (this gives you the largest possible view of a PDF file). PJ in NH (PJ-FredX-Tuck)
  14. We really appreciate all the replies we've received. We already have a Magellan unit for the car (just need to get the Canadian upgrade chip for it). So it seems like you're saying that I certainly can use the DeLorme for Canada, I just won't have the topo map feature to use (no different than what I'm using now regarding that). So is there any difference between the PN-20 and PN-40 (or 30) when it comes to being paperless?
  15. My husband and I are planning a geocaching-based vacation to the Canadian Maritimes this September. It's time to upgrade our basic level Garmin we've had for 4-5 years (Etrex Legend) - affectionately known as "Blue" or other names not fit to print at times. I want to go paperless (I'm tired of printing up all the caches and carrying around a notebook) and get a GPSer that has more retention of signal under tree canopy. I would also like to keep the price under $500, preferably $300. The Delorme units seem interesting to me, but do they work in Canada ? All the info I've been reading seems so confusing, and they don't always (away from this form) specifically address the features that a geocacher would need/want. Can you please help us? PJ-FredX-Tuck (And Tucker doesn't care what we use, as long as he gets to experience new smells and sights, especially if he encounters a squirrel or two!)
  16. My Geopup Tucker would like to think he can find them all (and I frequently tell him that we couldn't do it without him), but I think he's at least convinced we could never find the way back to the Jeep without his frequent attempts to mark the trail, even when he starts "shooting blanks." I would think some dogs could be trained to recognize certain scents which might reside in a cache, but on the whole, it's likely luck of the draw for most of our loyal geopups. I should note he is pretty good about picking the right trail, and he has very good trail manners and never ahem "drops a load" on the trail itself no matter how rustic it looks...though he also thinks he can hide behind a sapling and we can't see him when he does his thing.
  17. Lately the prepackaged individual Off! Insect repellent wipes have been popular. ;-)
  18. Thanks so far for the replies. Having been raised in Maine and living in New Hampshire, I have to agree about the black flies. My husband is just about allergic to them. But I'll tell you it isn't as bad in Central NH as it is in Central Maine -- those things come in May and you can still find them (or they can find you) in late summer.
  19. Just need advice on how the geocachers cope with ticks, snakes, etc., when they cache. In New Hampshire we are basically concerned with ticks, but PJ-FredX-Tuck (ok, Tuck could hardly care) would like to know how you deal with the above. For instance, FredX is leery of caching in the south as, he's concerned we'll have a horrific snake experience. Please tell us not only how you deal with the above, but also some of your experiences.
  20. We are planning on being in Richmond, Virginia for Thanksgiving week. We'd like to do several Geocaches while in the area. Note, we'd preferably like to stay outside of the city limits, but keep our travel time to within a 20-30 minute drive of the Short Pump area of Richmond. We would also like to keep the difficulty/terrain under a 3. Of course if the hunt for the cache takes us to an interesting area, all the better! Thanks so much if you can help us.
