  1. As always there is an option in addition to the ones listed. Look at the thread but don't vote. So, with over 475 views and only 25 votes I have to conclude that approximately 5% of the people cared enough to vote, and of those about 1/3 weren't interested. Looks like this project is officially dead. Thanks for reading, AtP
  2. You have started a Holy War!!! Ok, on a more serious note, I'm not as familliar with the Garmin eTrex line as I am with Magellan, but the 310 is older, (I believe) discontinued, and the bottom of the Magellan line. The Garmen eTrex Venture is either 2 or 3 up from the bottom of the line and is reasonably current technology. Based on the above info I'd keep the Venture. If I'm wrong about any of this I hope someone will correct me. And, as always, YMMV. AtP

  4. Check out http://www.cartom.virtual-space.com/gps.htm for nice cases for several brands/models of GPS David
  5. quote:Originally posted by Top:I've thought of running with a laptop, but it takes too much space for me. Yah, yah, I drive an Expedition but still it takes up too much space. How about using a dedicated board like from http://www.arcomcontrols.com/ and secure it under a seat. Take the video output to an LCD screen attached via a mount or velcro. Just a thought and I bring it up for comments. Top There are numerous PC and PDA based solutions available, but I consider them to be too expensive, too small, or too fragile. What I'm thinking about is planned to be a 4"x5" LCD screen that is about 1/2" thick for easy viewing while driving. I'm hoping to keep the price under $200 and possibly have user definable maps. The last is going to be pretty iffy, I have a lot of hurdles to clear before even starting to think about that one. AtP
  6. There are a couple of posts out there on the Geode. here is one to get you started..... AtP
  7. I suspect the basemaps on all the handheld GPS's we play with are not very accurate... I have marked waypoints for about 4 intersections around my home and they bear no resemblance what-so-ever to the map in my Map 330X. AtP
  8. You should start the bug in the cache it's going to have the clue for. Then the first finder can move the bug as the final leg of the multi. Or is that too evil? AtP

  10. quote:Originally posted by Goat Commander:This may be best for another thread or another board entirely, but global warming exists! We have temperature data for less than 150 years. You can not make that absolute claim any more than I can claim the reverse. We just don't have the data to prove it one way or another. And anyone who says anything else is selling something. Don't get me wrong, we need to take care of this planet. We (the human race) can certainly behave more responsibly in regard to the environment. But we don't need a bunch of hysterical, sensationalistic claims to confuse the issue and distract us from the goal of keeping the planet in some form that we can live, thrive on, and enjoy. Global warming may be happening, and if so we need to take action. But only after determening the need, not "Do it for the children!!!" or other emotional reasons. Get the facts and act on them. Respectfully, AtP
  11. I'm thinking of a screen size of 4"x5", but that could change from input to this poll or the cost and availability of LCD displays. It's all blue sky at the moment, but I think I see a way to do it. AtP
  12. Would you pay for an external color map screen that connects to your GPS?
  13. Check out Manifold Systems for a lot of mapping capability. Of course it comes with a price tag of around $250, so ExpertGPS or Ozi Explorer may be a better choice for you. AtP
  14. All of a sudden there's no time/date stamp on the posts and the edit button is gone? What's up with that? AtP

Can anyone spare 10 bucks? :-) Get Trillian, it's free. Did mIRC start limiting your time connected if you don't pay? AtP

  19. ...all brands of SD cards work well. On another, un-named site, I found this: quote:Looking around as well as hearing it in some of the groups I was able to locate a great place for buying additional memory for the Meridian line of GPSR's. Just use this link Secure Digital Memory and in the search field of this site type in "Secure Digital" 32 megs of memory is only 25.00 and 64 megs is 46.00 You can't beat that anywheres! Magellan sells 32 megs for 99.00 I think. This type of memory has been tested on the Meridians and works fine. I hate to forward this annonymously but this board censors the name of the other site. 20. quote:Originally posted by BassoonPilot: Yes, I was taught the same thing when I was growing up, and I know that is what they teach in many areas. It is definitely NOT the recommended procedure on NYC buses or the subway system. It is definitely NOT the recommended procedure in areas of gang activity. The law enforcement officer who lives next door confirmed that "avert your eyes/keep moving" is what they teach in this area. But hey, come on out to our NYC urban areas and test your method ... let me know how you do. It worked for me last time I was in downtown Dallas, it worked for me all up and down the Atlantic ports in Europe, and island hopping in the Carribean. Of course in a city that disarms its law abiding citizenry the criminals can feel bold. AtP
  21. GPS V can connect to an external antenna, so that's really not an issue in this case. AtP
  22. Ok, it's not that the Garmin creates fewer waypoints for trackback, it just uses fewer of them in the actuall trackback. Here is the link to the screen shots made by Joe Mehaffey. AtP
  23. quote:Originally posted by peter: 1) Your equation is missing a parenthesis and should read: Actual Distance = SQRT((WPT1A-WPT2A)^2+D^2) Thank you. I was in a hurry and missed that last close parenthesis when I recreated it. Also note that the D is actually the horizontal distance between the two waypoints. quote:2) Don't use the backtrack function since doing this will eliminate the timestamps needed to calculate the speed. The tracklog gives you positions, altitudes, and times of successive points and is all you need. [Your procedure assumes you have a record of the horizontal speed between each set of backtrack points and I don't know of any GPS rcvr. that stores that data.] Yeah, I was wondering about that as I was driving to work. But having the time of each waypoint makes it simpler. I also assume you mean "backtrack to route" function. quote:3) Garmin and Magellan rcvrs. should work about the same. Joe Mehaffey had a review with some screen shots showing that the Magellan receivers actually create more waypoints during a backtrack than the Garmins do. I would have posted a direct link but I couldn't find it right off. quote:4) In almost all cases you can skip all of this and just use the speeds shown by the GPS rcvr. directly without much error. A 30% grade is considered a steep ski run and on that grade the difference between horizontal difference and actual distance is less than 4.5%. And note that this assumes you're skiing straight down the run and not slalomming back and forth which would reduce the effective grade. If you know or can measure the grade then it's probably easiest to multiply the indicated horizontal speed by a correction factor (sqrt[(1+grade)^2]) to convert to actual speed. So for a 30% grade the correction factor is sqrt(1+.3^2) = sqrt(1.09) = 1.044. Now that's what I like, a simple answer. AtP
