  1. Here is a resource that could prove to add a new twist to geocaching. Instead of just using the current landscape for clues and reference points, why not add some historical items to your geocaches. "The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North and South America cartographic history materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented. " The cool twist is that they have created a java app that will allow you overlay detailed historical maps on to current geospatial data. The possibilities....well thats what we are here to discuss. http://www.davidrumsey.com/GIS/index.htm ---------------------------- TeamWSMF@wsmf.org
  2. During my first weekend long trip of geoaching I wound up either buying or finding the following which I have been using since. A hat. Yeas a simple hat that keeps the heat in , the rain out and the sun away. It has also come in handy when crawling thru thick foliage. A walking stick. I found this at the Johns River Falls cache in OR. It is just some wood that does the trick. I saw it near the riven and simply had to have it- I have used it to steady my footing, dig around without having to get mucked up and to poke at possible cache locations. Boots. Truth be told I did my first couple of cache in a pair of ratty old sandals; not what any sane person would think to wear out in the woods. My wife got me a good pair of boots and Im loving them. ---------------------------- TeamWSMF@wsmf.org

  4. Take a handy eTrex GPS unit, most any old Palm Pilot and link them togther with a cable and what do you get? With these apps for the Palm Pilot you can grab the data from your eTrex and have your Palm show you movable maps, routes, traces, and all sorts of views of where you are and just where you are going. There are apps made just for the eTrex to allow the Palm to store tons of data that you can move into the eTrex' limited memory when you need it. Most of the apps do not require the lattest or greatest Palm units, most will run on the older ones that you can pick up on the cheap There are a number of ways to modify the handy little GPS unit that the TeamWSMF has equiped themselves with. First off you will need a cable to hook your PC to your eTrex. The Dingos from downunder have a great page showing the possibilities for getting the cable. This .cz based eTrex Fan page will show you how to make your own cable. The next stop should be an upgrade of your firmware from Garmin's site, if you need to rev up to the lattest version. Then there are the hacked firmwares. These add features like new map symbols. You can also find kits to make your own modifications to the firmware. Careful with that axe Eugene, the unit you turn into a worthless pile of plastic just might be your own. Messing with firmware hacks always has its dangers, so measure twice cut once. -tom of teamwsmf ---------------------------- TeamWSMF@wsmf.org
