  1. I think its also important to note that most of South Africa’s best assets are behind private property signs. Unfortunately if something interesting or beautiful is not locked behind a fence with a price attached to it - chances are it will be stolen or vandalized. I do agree that placing caches where it could harm the environment or any people are really very distasteful. Everyone has to asses the situation and look at the area objectively. It is important to realize that our natural heritage is what makes Geocaching in South Africa so rewarding. I agree that people who wish to lodge complaints or concerns regarding cache placement should do so via the cache reviewer as they have the power to archive etc. Getting the authorities involved can be a really risky business as they tend to shun that which they do not understand. We may even end up paying a new GEO tax for the right to Geocache in SA. Ouch B!! There goes that idea
  2. The beaches between Melkbos & Big Bay leave a lot to be desired. That’s one idea for a CITO. Sounds like we missed quiet an event this weekend, unfortunately the family felt we spent too much time Geocaching and not enough time with them. So to solve the problem we took them Geocaching in their home town
  3. I wonder how the average domestic canine would handle an encounter of the hissing type? There are many stories of dogs killing the snakes without being killed themselves, instinct is an amazing defense system.
  4. As many have figured, our name comes from our initials with the &Dogs being our children. Now in a disjointed kind of way GS&Dogs also implies GSD which is of course German Shepard Dog- our children being white German Shepard Dogs. I assure you this makes perfect sense to us
  5. Not to mention Helga become Discombob??
  6. Its not always so easy. These are a few things mentioned in a team situation: * I thought you brought the GPSr * I thought you brought the cache note * I thought you brought the warm clothes * Go this way, it's shorter...... * I want that toy * I can't go any further. * and in the case of our dogs, WOOF WOOF LOL all in the name of adventure
  7. Here is another option - buying online from a South African site. There prices are a little better than CUM, DS, OW and SW. They also specialise in GPSrs so there aftersales service might be better. http://www.techshop.co.za/
  8. AaH! u may be right, my memory as far as peoples names are concerned leaves a lot to be desired.
  9. Things only geocachers do cont: * spend hours on a aparatus designed for children in search treasure * spend hours on a aparatus designed for children in the dead of night * poke torches at all the little holes on a aparatus designed for children * stair at a little electronic device while walking on a nudist beach * buy twenty of the same useless items at a crazy store * walk right over a cape cobra to get to a little pile of stones on the other side
  10. Globalrat is the warranty really worth anything in South Africa. We don't have experience with the service of GPS'rs but I can tell you that we had a tough time with our Pentax camera. Also when you get the Garmap software with the actual GPSr here, that software does not allow you to autoroute on your pc can you still autoroute on your GPSr with those maps installed?
  11. Donovan of clifford & donovan was at our geocaching meet in Greyton but i am not sure if they are still active together THE HUSKIES are also a new team in the WC.
  12. It is a tough decision and the size of your wallet effects that decision tremendously. You must go for the best you can afford. So the first step is to determine what your budget is. As far as the two different brands are concerned we agree with B&F - Garmin is more readily available in South Africa.
  13. Well if u can't get them into Capecaching you not going to see much of them A little bribery never killed anyone

Guess who's planning a trip to JHB - Go get em Discombob!!

    Milestones

We have to congrat B&F on their century - you give us something strive for. Also would like to mention THE HUSKIES as they are really getting close to biting us on the tails:). They been at it just over a month and already sitting in the 60's. As for the Paint chipping off the walls and the jungle in the garden - Goofster you free this weekend? We would really like to go Geocaching this weekend but our lawn needs an urgent cut
  16. Maybe Discombob made a subliminal prediction as to how many caches will be located in the WC by the end of the year. To some of us in WC, South Africa = WC
  17. Oh Dear That means we have only found about 10 caches in total If your nic is something like PiratePete and in real life you are not really a pirate, may you then log a find. There will be competition "its basic instinct in humans" - where there is competition there will be people bending the rules to up their rankings. At the same time there will be others striving to reach the higher levels. It’s all relative anyway. Everyone cant spend the same amount of time on the sport cause then our country wouldn't have an economy Maybe we should have more organized competitive events for those with the competitive streak in them. The event co-coordinator sets out a course of new caches to do. All the participants meet at a designated area, they are given there info sheets and off they go. First one to finish line wins!!
  18. In CT a TB Hotel is going to be a little bit difficult due to the location of the airport, or should I say due to the location around the airport. You cannot let people wander very far from the airport's premises as this could compromise their safety. The last thing the sport needs is to have someone attacked and robbed for TB's []
  19. I tried to warn you Discombob/Helga. They really do chop the footage up quite a bit. Thats why what u c is not always what u get in the media. In this case I think it definately did help create an awareness for the sport. Now all the local magazines will start latching on and doing articles. Its a chain of events. Well done Discombob -although not the prettiest tall blond swiss - you did a good job.
  20. Well done on FTF B&F!! We tried but your espresso seems to be a powerful tool
  21. I have the necassary software but i will need to get the snippet in a digital format. I dont have the hardware to record off tv. I will c if i can manage something though. If I cant, we can talk about getting the snippet to me some how.
  22. Is one of your options divx encoding? This will give you the smallest file size and best quality output. There is however quite alot of tweaking to do.
  23. Now you going to see first hand how things are changed when it comes out of the editing room. Who knows you may end up being a tall blonde swiss girl named Helga
  24. So how did it go Discombob? Did they indicate when they will be screening the Geocaching/Amazing Race insert?
  25. Aaaa! That was a double entry Sorry - just had to do it - the irony was just too much for me to resist.
