  1. Not sure if I can help much, but it is very easy to load the whole PQ at once. You need your gps to be plugged into your computer, and then just move your PQ into the file marked garmin.
  2. I too am new and struggled with downloading. Learned very important lesson. GPS won't let you load duplicate caches even if the additional attempts have more info. If you need to load them with additional info included, you need to empty your Oregon if the caches already there.
  3. Yes. I am good up to that point. But when I click show description, it has nothing other than the name and coordinates. Found the answer. I already had the caches loaded in the stripped version so when I tried to download the full version, GPS thought I was trying to make duplicates and wouldn't let me. Empty out original cache download new from GSAK -- Everything is perfect. All info is there. Thanks for the help and patience.
  4. I have done both. Made sure gpx not loc and geocache, not waypoint.
  5. Did you select a day for the PQ to run? (common mistake) Yes, to both questions. It shows up on my PQ page as ready to download and I select today and the next day each time I try.
  6. I am still missing a step. My PQ is in Gsak. It is 950 caches. I can check on each one and see the info but on my GPS, I only have the cache, no description or hints. I am very computer illiterate so can't figure out what is wrong.
  7. I am also a newbie having trouble transferring info. I have made the PQ and am using GSAK to transfer to my Oregon 450. It transferred the caches but not the accompanying info which I know is in the PQ because I can read it as I click on individual caches online in my PQ. What step am I missing?
  8. OK. I will stop trying to use Easygps and do it your way. It sounds so easy, but I am very computer ignorant which is probably part of the problem. I have the PQ loaded into GSAK but I don't know if it is still zipped or not. I can see the individual entries of caches but I cannot get them to my GPS. Where do you download to? How do you unzip? Where is GPS to drag to?
  9. I have a Garmin Oregon 450. I got the caches downloaded once ( can't remember how) but they didn't have any description or hints.
  10. Created a pocket query which yielded the requested 1000 caches as seen in the preview. Downloaded both GSAK and EasyGPS. Plugged GPS into Computer. Can't find the PQ or figure out how to download it.
  11. Created a pocket query which yielded the requested 1000 caches as seen in the preview. Downloaded both GSAK and EasyGPS. Plugged GPS into Computer. Can't find the PQ or figure out how to download it.
  12. I am a new geocacher, somewhat disabled. Did manage to get to a difficult cache except for the last 6 feet (according to my GPS). It was in sight but I just couldn't climb over two more big trees and some puddles to get it. My husband went over and signed, but did not read the log. Got home and went to log find and found there were 7 rules to be followed, one of which could only be done at the cache. Didn't read log so didn't know. Our fault I know. But being new ( it was our 2nd find) we didn't know about attaching rules. It is too difficult for me to go back and write the required info. Sent a note to cache owner. Also posted a short note that I didn't realize would be posted on the cache site. Question 1 - how can I remove that cache note that shouldn't be on the site. Question 2 - If I do the other 6 things required by the rules, would it be wrong, under the circumstances, to claim it? My guess is probably not. Very frustrating for elderly newbies.
  13. Running PQ's is what I was doing. I will go back and reread the info and see if I can find my mistakes.
  14. New to geocaching. Have found 2. Need some advice on downloading to my GPS. I have Garmin Oregon 450. Have gone to the Hide and seek cache page and by using parameters found about 1050 caches to download. Problem for which I am seeking help is that I have to do it page by page with only about 30 per page. Will take forever. Would like to load larger area so I can hunt when traveling. Also, hints don't seem to be loading. I see them on my computer, but when I push the hint button near the cache I am always told no hint. Help with either issue would be greatly appreciated.
  15. Thanks to your help, I was able to find the cache site today. I was so excited when my gps announced that I was there. It was marked easy find and terrain, but I couldn't find it The name referred to a low bridge and it also said "duh". I searched all over, under and around the bridge. How far away from the bridge should I have searched? Being easy terrain rating, didn't think it would be down in the shallow but rapidly moving river that goes under the bridge. Any thoughts?
  16. I picked some filters an area size that gave me about 1000 caches as I had read that is the biggest size for a PQ. Problem is I can't find a way to load them all at once. Am having to go page by page with only 25 on a page. Have Garmin 450. Any help?
  17. Thanks for all the great advice. I thought the pink line was the way to go just like on my car. Now I understand that I need to figure out where that line ends and find a way to get there. This is going to be even more of an adventure. I have played around with my GPS Oregon 450 and have downloaded the topo map from Groundspeak. My manual is pretty limited. I don't find an automotive or road option on my GPS, but switching to map helps. If I switch to compass, is that pointing to the direction I need to go? I turned it on and it pointed up which indicated E. I set the compass to go according to search as I didn't understand the different kinds of North. Will take everyone's advice and try again tomorrow. Thank you all.
  18. I went on my first hunt today and could not follow the map on my GPS (Oregon 400). I picked a cache that my GPS said was less than 1/2 mile away and it showed a pink line, but I couldn't follow it because there was no road but the pink line was still going on as if there was road. Wht do you think I am doing wrong?
  19. A couple of experienced cachers (100+ found) took me with them for a couple of caches and let me "find" them all by myself. Even let me use the GPS. From that moment on, I was hooked and they are delighted.
  20. I believe I have finally loaded the topo with all of your kind hand-holding. I think I was expecting more detail, but I think that it will be enough. If it ever stops snowing and blowing, we shall see. Thanks again everyone.
  21. I do have a garmin nuvi so will try that. Problem now is that I can't seem to load topo to GPS. I have it on computer as well as mapsource but can't get topo into mpsource to pick from to load it to GPS
  22. This is the most amazing group. You just don't let a newbie get so frustrated that they give up. Exactly what I needed. Finally managed to download Mapsource and the NYS topo. Now I think I am good to go. Thank you so much.
  23. Is it ok or is it bad form to leave a trackable in someone elses' cache? Would love to follow one but don't feel capable of doing my own cache yet.
  24. Ok, I know where it is by using my computer and seeing the map there. At least I know it is at the back of the park which is just down the road from me. Isn't there a way to see that kind of thing on my GPS?
  25. Ah - OK. Your premium status is not showing up on your profile here as it usually does. Right - that cache certainly isn't near a highway. It's located right next to a pretty good sized creek/ditch, as I'm sure you've noted from looking at the map on the cache page. If your Oregon 450 is putting you somewhere else, chances are that you don't yet have it configured to use the system (called a datum) we all use for caching. From your front panel: Setup > Position Format > Map Datum > [set to WGS84] If your datum was originally set to NAD27 or something else, that will explain the strange offsets in position you were seeing. One additional gotcha if you had to make this change -- your unit just made some translations of the coordinates for the caches you had loaded, and you'll find them in no different position than they were before. You will need to reload those caches to your unit. Either delete them from the Garmin/GPX folder and reload them, or just overwrite them. Either way, your 450 will see them as "new". And you really don't need Easy GPS with your 450 unless it allows you to manipulate the data in some fashion that you prefer. You can slide *.gpx files directly into the Garmin/GPX folder of your 450. If the datum WAS already set up correctly, we'll have to have another look at things. I checked and it says map datum wgs84. No I can't see that the cache is near a ditch. It just shows up as a spot on a line. I used Easy GPS because I also am using a new laptop and couldn't get the files unzipped. I am so technology illiterate that maybe I just can't do this.
