  1. I'm getting the same behavior with the "My Finds" PQ. I click "Add to Queue" and it did. Shortly after that, I got an email saying "Your Pocket Query titled "My Finds Pocket Query" has been generated and is now available for download on Geocaching.com. View and download completed Pocket Queries at http://www.geocaching.com/pocket/ " When I go to that URL, the "My Finds" PQ is not listed in the "Pocket Queries Ready for Download" tab. Am I missing a step? Should I email Groundspeak support? Edit to add: I just got back from lunch and checked again, and the My Finds PQ is available for me on the "Pocket Queries Ready for Download" tab. Maybe I just needed to wait longer. It would have been nicer if I didn't get the email until the PQ was actually ready.
  2. It appears to not be on the coinsandpins site anymore -- any ideas when this coin is going to be available again? Next month, my father is being honored for his many years of involvement in our Boy Scout troop, and I was really hoping to get him a scouting-related geocoin to present to him. I guess I really should have jumped on this coin when I saw it on their site a little bit ago. Short of it being available to purchase from the coinsandpins website, does anyone have an extra that they'd be willing to sell me?
  3. It's against the rules to geocache in the National Parks -- they have a policy that does not allow geocaching. That's a shame, but it's what they think is the best policy to ensure the preservation of the National Parks. I guess the NPS folks figure "better safe than sorry." Anyway, this IS NOT a thread to rehash the National Parks and geocaching question. What you can do, however, is create a travel bug whose goal it is to visit National Parks. That's exactly what I did with my newly created National Parks Passport travel bug (TB11G1Q). It's goal is to collect passport cancellation stamps from all of the National Parks. I know it's not an original idea -- I got the idea from a travel bug that my dad recently found (TBJXBW -- thanks to SavannahGeoGypsies for the idea), and I've since seen several other similar TBs. I thought it was a really cool idea, so I copied it. I plan to release the TB sometime in the next few weeks. I really think it will be neat to see this bug run around and collect passport cancellations, especially if the geocachers that find it take pictures of the stamps and/or the parks they visit with it. If you love the National Parks and you want to combine that with your love of geocaching, I encourage you to start a similar TB. [Edit: create urls]
  4. "Nearest Waymarks" appears to be kinda broken for me. I say "kinda", because it works sometimes, but not always. Here's how I tried to use it, and it was broken: 1. Visit "Washington Monument" NPS Cancellation Station waymark (here) 2. Click "Nearest NPS Passport Cancellation Stations 3. Get redirected to the Waymarking home page. Just before writing this up, I checked using one of the "featured waymarks" from the main page, and everything worked liked I expected it to work.... [Edit to fix URL.]
  5. Answering my own question.... We were able to create the account using the ISP-provided email address, then immediately change the address to the pobox.com address with no problem. It seems strange to me that pobox.com is not allowed during account creation, but valid after the account is created. *shrug* In the end, we've got the set-up that we were hoping for, so it's fine with us.
  6. I'm helping my father set up a geocaching account, but we're having problems due to validation issues on his email address. In order to reduce spam and increase privacy, my father uses pobox.com for his "public" email address -- it forwards email (after applying spam filters) to the address assigned to him by his ISP. However, when attempting to create a new geocaching account, we receive the following message: "We are not accepting email addresses from that provider. Please choose an alternate email address." Why is pobox.com being excluded? Using pobox.com is a great way to have an email address that is not tied to a specific ISP -- he's switched ISPs in the past and plans to move soon, which will probably result in another ISP/email address change. By never revealing the email address his ISP provided him, my father has been able to very effectively manage his spam. Obviously, if we have to, we will provide the ISP-provided email address in order to sign up for the account, but we'd much rather use the public email address that he uses for every other internet service he signs up for. Is there any chance of lifting the restriction on pobox.com addresses? Anyone have any other advice?
  7. My inclination would be to not exclude berry picking and allow for potential multiple logging of a particular waymark. Especially since, in this case, the overlap doesn't appear to be complete -- there may be berry picking marks that aren't appropriate for the new category -- I'd be inclined to let it go and not exclude berry picking from the new category. Yeah. A lot of future instances might be able to work in the "just submit waymarks to multiple categories" solution, but is that what we really want to do as a general rule? I can see good arguments on either side of that question.
  8. Recently, I submitted a waymark that was declined. Rightfully so -- I had misinterpreted one of the category requirements. I got a nice email notifying me that the waymark was declined, with an explaination as to why. Now I have an archived waymark in my "My Waymarks" list that will never be appropriate for the category I originally created it in. My first thought is that I'd like a way to delete the waymark completely instead of simply having it archived. I've seen discussion about deleting vs archiving, and I understand the general value of archiving instead of deleting. So I'm not going to ask for the option to delete the waymark, although in this case deleting the waymark would be a perfectly fine option. Instead, I'd like to suggest that a new field be added to the waymark listing when the waymark has been declined. Something along the lines of "Reason Waymark was Declined" or "Note from Category Owner (or Reviewer)" or similar. This field would be populated with the comments that the reviewer made when declinging the waymark. If the waymark is eventually approved, this field would be cleared, but if the waymark is never approved, this field would serve as a reminder for why the waymark was declined. In my case, the notes I got in the email notifying me that the waymark was declined were nice comments that explained precisely why my waymark was inappropriate. Since my waymark will never be approved, it will be nice to know exactly why it was declined when I'm looking through my list a few months from now -- I'll be looking at my list of waymarks, notice this one has a line through it, and unless I remember why it was declined, I might attempt to re-submit somewhere down the line. As a work-around, I've decided to use the "Private Message" field to hold that information to serve as a reminder for me. That's a good enough work-around, but something a bit more automated would be better. The other suggestion I had deals with the actual message a waymarker gets when a waymark is declined. In my case, I don't know for certain who declined my waymark. The email said something like "Category Owner," so I assume that's correct, but I'm not sure if that was just boiler-plate text -- was it really the category owner, or might it have been any of the other officers in the category? Either way, it would be nice if the reviewer's username was included so the waymarker would know for certain. Again, in my case, it's not a big deal since I'm not going to be attempting to resubmit the waymark, but for cases where it is appropriate to modify and resubmit the waymark, it would be nice to know exactly who declined the waymark so a waymarker can work with that person while going through the process of cleaning up the waymark. All told, I probably spent more time writing up this forum post than is warranted by this issue, but I figured I'd share my thoughts on the process anyway. Edit: Oops -- I should have searched the forums before writing this post. This previous post pretty much says the same thing I did. Looks like TPTB are looking into addressing this. I'm looking forward to 2.0....
  9. I've been wanting something similar from Waymarking for a while. I've spent the past hour searching through the forum looking for indications for whether or not a "printable" directory will be created, and this topic seemed to be the closest to what I was looking for. Instead of creating a new topic, I'll add on to this -- hope that's OK. As the number of categories grows, it's more and more difficult to remember what's required to record / log a waymark for a given category. I'd like to see the ability to easily print the "more detail" information for a category -- perhaps the ability to create a PDF similar to the PDF creation available (for permium members) on a geocache page. If I had that capability, I'd be able to easily browse the directory, printing out category details for categories that interest me. I'd take those print-outs, put them in a binder, and keep them in my car, so when I stumble across a potential waymark, I can easily check the category requirements before starting to gather information on a specific site. As it is, I'm starting the process of creating that booklet for myself by doing a copy-paste of the information on the "more detail" page to my word processor. Some of the formatting I get by doing that is a little annoying, but I can clean it up without much difficulty. It would be much easier if I could just grab a wm.com-generated PDF. Taking this idea a little further, I'd love to combine the PDF-generating capability with the "my favorite categories" capability. One click to generate a PDF booklet containing the "more detail" information for every category that I've designated as one of my "favorites" would be great. While I'm dreaming, I'll go ahead and mention that a dynamically generated table of contents, shoing the category heirarchy for categories saved in this booklet, would be a feature that I'd love.
  10. In a response to my question about forum RSS feeds, Polar B's pointed me to a comment on another thread that mentioned new categories are being given RSS feeds as they are requested. Fair enough, and very reasonable. As such, I'd like to request RSS be available for the 3 Waymarking Topics: - Getting Started with Waymarking - Recruitment and Category Proposals - Waymark Category Discussion I'm especially interested in the "Getting Started with Waymarking" RSS feed, as that's the forum I try to keep up with most often. Thanks!
  11. I figure I'll try giving this post a bump.... Does anyone know of any plans to offer RSS feeds for all forum topics? Are there any other geocachers who would like to see this feature?
  12. I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, and if it is, whether or not this is the appropriate place to report it. Feel free to point me in a better direction, if that's more appropriate. When creating a log for a waymark, I am given the option to choose a date for the log. I have noticed that if I choose a date in the past, the current date is the date assigned to the entry. If I go back and edit my log, I can change the date and the log is modified with the date from the past. Doing so obviously triggers the logic that adds a "this log was edited..." note at the bottom. I don't know if this is relevant to reproducing the bug, but when I've seen it, it has been when my attempt to log a visit is prior to the creation of the waymark. E.g., I just created WMBWC today, but I visited the site last week. When logging my visit (which I do for the waymarks I create so I'll get the checkmark on the web page for listings -- it helps me keep track of what waymarks I haven't visited yet), I chose April 28 as the log date. The log is reported as May 3. I have not edited this log entry to modify the date (I'd rather have the visit date off by a few days than have the "log was edited..." note), but on other waymark logs (WMBKM, e.g.), I have edited the date after submiting the initial log entry and it allowed me to change the date to a date that is a few days before the approval of the waymark. I don't know what the desired behavior *should* be (can a waymark be "visited" before it is approved on the sitte?), but having the option to choose a date for the log and apparently ignore that date is probably not the desired behavior.
  13. I haven't found this addressed in the forums, but if it's already been discussed, I apologize and would love it someone gave me a link to the thread.... I've recently started paying more attention to the GC forums, but would much rather use an RSS aggregator to keep up with new threads than use the web interface. As far as I've been able to determine, RSS feeds are available for only 9 of the forums. I'm especially interested in RSS for the Waymarking forums, and they do not appear to be available via RSS. Are there any plans to provide RSS feeds for all of the forums? If there currently aren't any plans, can this be added to the forums.Groundspeak.com "to-do list"? Or, maybe I'm just blind and it's already there -- if so, I'd appreciate a nudge in the right direction. FWIW, the 9 forums that currently have RSS feeds can be determined by looking at the page source -- they're the "link" elements in the "head" of the HTML. They are: Geocaching Announcements, General Geocaching Discussions, Getting Started with Geocaching, GPS Units & Software, Geocaching.com Web Site, Nordic and Baltic Countries, Geocaching in the United Kingdom, Geocaching in New England, and Geocaching in Canada.
