  1. These are good suggestions. I'd be fine with ordering the part and doing it myself.... Thanks for the replies.
  2. I obviously meant another way of getting my button replaced. If I was gonna buy a new unit, I'd probably stick with Garmin and go for an Oregon... which has no buttons at all! As far as the refurb goes, while that might be nice in some ways, I'm really just looking to get the button replaced. $150 may not be a bad price for a new refurbished unit, but that's not what I'm in the market for. It's kind of like taking your car in for a broken door handle and having them tell you it's gonna be $15k to fix it, because instead of repairing the handle they want to give you a whole new car.
  3. I called them this morning (the email form on their site hasn't been working) and asked how much it would be to replace the "MARK" button that fell off... they said, since it is out of warranty, $150! I was shocked! That's half the price of a new unit! Does this seem kind of high to anyone? A few months ago, I broke the battery compartment cover and asked how much it would be to replace it and they said "no worries, we'll send you one for free!" Now, that's not what I expect every time.... but $150 seems unreasonable to me for replacing a button. Am I crazy? Should I do it? Anyone know of another option? Thanks!
  4. Slots-O-Fun was my 600th cache. I was just back there a couple of weeks ago for TDS.... so sad to not be able to cache in ABDSP....
  5. Same for me-- tried to run a PQ that last ran on 4/27 and it never came. Copied it and boom-- it ran immediately. Now, I'm off to geocache!
  6. Yeah, I don't think you can add attachments to posts in this forum. You're gonna have to copy and paste it into your post.
  7. If I look and I don't find it, I log a DNF (almost at my 100th!!). I will log a DNF every time I search and don't find, even if it's 10 times on the same cache (and, no... that has never happened ). If I really think the cache is missing, I contact the owner or state it in my DNF log. If I don't hear back from the owner after a sufficient amount of time and a couple emails and it has been a fair amount of time since a valid find, I log a "needs maintenance" or "needs archived", depending on the details of the situation. The latter is fairly rare.
  8. If nobody among the FTF group has a problem with it, then who cares? I can see a problem occuring if cacher A finds it while cacher B is looking someplace totally different and cacher A doesn't want to share the glory with cacher B but cacher B logs an FTF anyways.... But if cacher A and cacher B consider themselves a team and if one finds they all find, what's the problem? Even if they go out with cachers c, d, e & f and they all consider themselves caching together... then that's how they want to play the game. Big deal. I mean heck, my caching name is Cache Heads, referring to myself, my wife and my son. If I find a cache without them does that mean I should open up a new account for Cache Head and log it myself? Life's too short for this kind of nitpicking!
  9. No way-- just today, as I was searching for caches, I had the strongest desire to find out where I can buy a refurbished GPS for cheap.... and now I find out that non-premium members have that information displayed for them right there on the search page?? Totally unfair!!
  10. I say to each his own. Logging a find online, while considerate, isn't a rule as far as I can tell. If you want to go for a cache, go for it. If not, don't. If you want to play the FTF game and you get to the cache and realize the log has already been signed then guess what? You lost.
  11. Yeah, premium member caches will have the icon next to them-- but doing a search near your recently found caches didn't turn up any (within the first 20 mile radius, at least). Honestly there are a lot of great reasons to be a premium member (Pocket Queries being #1 by far), but premium member only caches really aren't a huge benefit. There are very few of them around and the majority of them aren't anything special. Only thing I can think of is that some cachers list their caches as PMO for the first week or so and then convert them to standard caches. Might give an edge for the FTF, but even that is fairly rare.
  12. I was always taught not to speak to strangers. Except on message boards of course... but that's not really speaking-- it's typing.
  13. I use CacheMate with my Treo 755p and it works flawlessly. even better when paired up with CacheNav and a bluetooth GPSr. Here's a review I did a long time ago-- it was when I had a Treo 650, but the results are basically the same (scroll down to the "caching with the Palm" segment: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=116191
  14. Many vBulletin boards allow users to attach a file of a certain size or type to their posts. That's why the section appears is in your user control. Unfortunately, this forum does not allow that option when posting.
  15. IBTL! Seriously, if you've nabbed over 50 caches that day just wait 'til after midnight to log the one with the "Powercacher clause". Then write this in the log: "1 of 1 found today. TFTC."
  16. Are you sure they didn't archive it because of the flooding? EDIT: BTW, I'm cool with constructive criticism.... regular criticism, too. It's all good.
  17. And if their "problem" isn't on the list? How 'bout if a problem they considered less important got fixed first? Or if their problem is taking too long to be fixed? My guess is that if there's a problem, TPTB are working on it. Asking "is it done yet? is it done yet? is it done yet?" doesn't help anything. And for them to create a list would just encourage that type of behavior.
  18. LOL, I'm always amazed at how polite TPTB are when it comes to threads like this... you really think they care if you are informed on every little change they're working on? If I were them, I would release as little info as possible because I know that every little bit of info I did release would be met by 50 posts asking "why?", or "but, why not this way...?" or "that's a nice idea but I think this...." or "thanks for the update, but I really wish...." How bout just sit back and enjoy the ride? Most people pay nothing to be here and those that do pay shell out a whopping $30/year-- not enough to be in on the decision making process, IMHO.
  19. Are you really being contacted that much?? If so, you are either really popular or there is something wrong with the way you hide or seek caches.
  20. I think it comes down to what kind of person the seeker is, in general-- not just in Geocaching. Personally, I have searched for caches without reading the description or hint for one reason or another. That doesn't mean I'm going to do anything I'd be uncomfortable doing in any other setting. Trampling flowers, ripping out sprinkler heads and not putting them back, trespassing, bushwacking through sensitive areas, etc... are not things I would do, whether Geocaching or not. So, I'd assume someone who is willing to do those things will do so regardless of whether or not they are told it's necessary.
  21. I think "Constitutional rights as Americans" is a big stretch. I think the OP had a valid point. We all know him to be intelligent, inciteful and not afraid to speak up..... <snip> Sorry for the late response-- I just wanted to clear up the fact that while I disagreed with the tone and some of the intent of the original post, I in no way meant to insult the intelligence or integrity of the original poster. If it came over that way, I apologize.
  22. Do the masses really need calming? Last time I checked, there were about 257,527 registered members on this board and 1 or 2 (maybe 3?) seem to have a problem. I agree that it's in everybody's best interest, including Groundspeak's, for the forum to be run as fairly as possible. But this topic is titled "Time to Reign (sic) in the Mods", which, IMHO, is an overly-assertive statement coming from a visitor on a privately run forum. Maybe I'm hyper-sensitive as a moderator myself (on another board, of course), but I always find it hilarious when board members have a problem with rules being inconsistent or somehow seem to think their Constitutional rights as Americans apply on a privately run website. If people would understand that posting is a privilege and not a right, maybe they wouldn't get so upset when something gets edited, locked or deleted. That's why I brought up the issue. I agree with much of your post. However, I do believe that it is fair to strive to eliminate inconsistencies. You may not care for the wording of my post or that of the OP, but that does not minimize the importance of the issue. Point well taken. I think you're right, my problem was more with the wording than the issue. I'm all for fair forum moderation-- I just know how it is to be an under appreciated moderator and I also know that being consistent isn't always possible. My guess is that the mods here do their best to be fair and consistent-- but sometimes they might make decisions we don't agree with and that is their right as reps of the site. With that said, I understand how discussions like this can be healthy and I commend the mods in question for allowing it to continue!

  24. But, that is a privilege-- not a right. The only reason it's true is because the people who run the board allow it. This is a public forum. But it is privately run by a privately owned organization on a privately owned server. Therefore, you are at the whim of TPTB. Simple as that. Funny enough, none of those out-of-control mods have closed this thread....
