  1. But that is the way Facebook works. Then why do I have to block Farmville instead of the other way around? It's the exact opposite of what dfx describes! If by "the way you want" you mean "the exact opposite of the way you want" I agree. Let me clarify. DFX is saying he doesn't get why people keep suggesting you can block an app because he thinks you should never have to tell anything what he doesn't want to see. And I am saying but that is the way Facebook works. If you don't want to let everything in and have to block specific items, then you should not be using Facebook. So if you are using Facebook, you should be used to blocking stuff you don't want and this app idea should be as easy to block as any other app. On the Groundspeak side of things, it already works the way DFX wants it to work. You don't see pages until you go look for them. You don't emails about caches until you hide caches or put them on watch, etc. You would not be posting your find to Facebook until you chose to in the geocaching app. Therefore, the geocaching app would work the way DFX expects. Hope that clears it up.
  2. Paying for special attention to get ahead of others that are being socially appropriate by waiting in line as expected would hardly be the same thing. That, I would consider being elitist in a bad way. Hey, we agree again. I think premium membership is more like paying extra for a scooter at Disney World to make it easier to get around. It just gets you a few extra perks to make life easier, but anyone can find caches.
  3. Purchase a premium membership because it offers features you want and use. Groundspeak has plenty of revenue streams to keep afloat. They're not a charity that needs donations.
  4. I'd ignore any hides tapped into the top of a telephone pole.
  5. But that is the way Facebook works. And the geocaching app would work the way you want.
  6. I can't say I've ever noticed an elitist attitude I could attribute to a Premium membership. That's why I said I don't think it is premium caches or premium memberships. I think when the attitude creeps up it has more to do with the poster and not so much with what kind of account he has or cache he has hidden.
  7. Hey...wait! How did you find out about the donuts?!?! Not that there are really any donuts...there aren't...but if there *were* donuts to find out about, how would you have found out about them?!?! No, no---no donuts here! Move along! Move along! Who said anything about donuts?
  8. For my own personal edification, as I also am not a Facebook expert. I know I could block the hypothetical Geocaching posts on my Facebook feed with a single click. I've used that trick for all manner of Facebook apps I really have no interest in hearing from. Farmville, Farmtown, Frontierville, Mafia Wars, Vampire Wars, Pirates, etc, etc. It's a never ending task, but since it only takes a few seconds, it's one I don't grumble about too often. What I do gripe about are all the emails I receive from these various apps before I block them. While the hundreds of flamingos do disappear like magic when I pluck the first one, the emails I get prior to that blocking remain in my inbox, and must be deleted one at a time. "BillyBob needs help harvesting potatoes" <Delete> "Fred sent you a wagon wheel" <Delete> "Fred sent you a wagon wheel" <Delete> "Fred sent you a wagon wheel" <Delete> "BillyBob needs help harvesting potatoes" <Delete> "Fred sent you a wagon wheel" <Delete> Multiply that by a factor of 10, and you'll see what my inbox looks like. For the Facebook Ninjas amongst us, it there a way to prevent any app from sending me an email? https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/editaccount.php?notifications Go to the notifications under Account/Account Settings and you can adjust what notifications you receive. I get very few emails from Facebook as I prefer to see Facebook stuff when I log into Facebook, not in my email. You have a lot of control there.
  9. Sure they exist. And they're elitist too. And full of donuts.
  10. You do, of course, realize that you wouldn't be able to block it because you can't see FB at all, thus alleviating the need to block it until you can actually see FB, right? Of course. On the other hand, the longer I stay away from FB the more cluttered my feed is going to get by the time I get back. Although I have a spam filter on my two primary email accounts a lot of junk still gets through. With my iPhone linked to both accounts I'm able to stay on top of it and delete the junk that still makes it's way into my inboxes. Of course, it only takes one click to delete an unwanted email message, right? Well, According to Ferris Research, "in 2009 worldwide spam costs hit a staggering $130 billion of which $42 billion was in the US alone." It may only take one or two clicks to block unwanted messages, but the time it takes to block something that is avoidable in the first place adds up. This statement makes me think that you *don't* understand how blocking apps in facebook works. It's not like e-mail, where once it's in your inbox, it has to be manually removed. It's a live feed. If you block the app *once*, all posts by that app disappear, even ones that were sent prior to the app being blocked. So hide the app on the first message that you come to, even if it's the most recent one sent, and all the other messages will disappear--you won't see them at all as you scroll through all the posts from the last 2 weeks. Yes, blocking apps on Facebook is simple. Do it once and you don't have to see anymore of that app in your feed. It's not like you have to block each individual post. I guess I don't know exactly how FB application blocking works. I'm mostly a casual user of FB and I suspect I'm not alone. I just did a google search on "How to block Facebook apps" and the results indicate that I'm not the only person that isn't clear on it works. It works pretty much like blocking/hiding any other post. You click the X beside the post. You are presented with 2 options. One to block the post and the other to block the app. Edited to add this. When you google "How to block Facebook apps", you are probably getting results from people wanting to block all facebook apps at once. There are some who do not want to see ANY apps. I'm not aware of a way to do that. But blocking a single app is easy.
  11. The problem, as I see it, is not with premium only caches or premium memberships. It's with the elitist attitude that sometimes gets expressed.
  12. Tell ya what. Since you insist on deactivating your humor cells, That's the issue, everyone one of your "jokes" are not an attempt at "humor" but attempts at making fun of Micro's. It's really annoying. Especially if you like micro's. +1 Did you even read Clan rifsters post? He said he was NOT making fun of micros, and had no mention of them in his post. You are, my friend, jumping to conclusions and picking sides too quickly. Did you see ME say micro? I am very aware of Clan Riffster's stance. Again, I don't think he believes he could be affected by this type of crusader. But all it takes is a couple of poorly placed caches to get a landowner riled up if someone has a beef against the cacher that placed those caches. And others, including CR, you and me, could become collateral damage as a result. It doesn't matter how particular you pay attention to the rules and respect land owner right, etc.
  13. And I'm sure that rape victims hear the same kind of statements. If only they'd just shut up, if only they wouldn't feel compelled to defend themselves when asked whether they think that they deserved it, or if they were proud of their actions. Same thing. This is why it is clearly not worthwhile trying to have a conversation. Like trying to discuss with a lynch mob. Reminds me that I really should stop reading my email and then coming back here! Huh? When did I tell Clan Riffster to shut up? His bias DOES influence his statements. In particular, it influences what he passed off as a joke when it came off as a dig against his favorite topic due to those known biases. That doesn't mean he can't make jokes. Just don't expect everyone to think it's funny. He is only directing the joke to the user he quoted...Sioneva. Others might laugh at it and like it while others might not like it. You having the right to say you don't like it is OK. But now i think you got a little too carried away with your argumentative posts. I honestly wanted to know how Clan Riffster would feel if this actually affected him. He doesn't look for these kinds of hides, so it seems easy for him to take the position he has. But this affects a lot of cachers who actually like the hides that are now being archived. You see, I get the feeling that some here don't think this could happen to them because they don't do P&G caches. When in reality, this could happen to any of us if someone took it upon themselves to be crusaders against caches they didn't like.
  14. I think VDOT. I don't think anyone won. VDOT probably didn't care until drdan got involved. Well obviously they *DID* care, that is why they said no. I maintain that VDOT won. They managed to get rid of all those pesky caches on their property. Sounds like a win to me. If they really cared they would have done something before drdan. drdan just kind of forced their hand. It's one thing to be aware of a thing and not mind it going on. It's another to have it pointed out to you and asked do you want it to continue or not. Once asked directly and you say yes, then you could potentially open yourself to liability, in which case the path of least resistance is to just say no. I still say noone won here. Not even drdan.

  18. You clearly have a problem recognizing sarcasm. Or are you also saying that misstating something which results in accusing someone of whatever isn't rude (as has been done here)? That does fit your replies. So, here's a question for you -- have you stopped beating your spouse? I think that question makes as much sense (and has the same purpose) as you asking your question. Do you have ANYTHING to suggest that he has ever beat his spouse? He asked if you are proud of what you accomplished here. You did, in fact, accomplish something here. Are you proud of it?
  19. You may be right. Most of us are on the outside looking in. Any assumptions we make must reflect the information we have at hand, and therefor must be taken with a grain of salt. We don't really know what was in the NA note that was posted, because the cache owner decided it would be in her best interest to delete it. We do, however, know what DrDan claims that he wrote in that NA, and this claim has not been refuted. That doesn't necessarily make it true, but it's all we have to go on for now. We also know that the Reviewer archived it with the following statement: Archiving at the request of the Virginia DOT. At this point, DrDan's claims seem to gain a bit of validity. Why? No one is disputing the fact that DrDan contacted VDOT and VODT requested these caches to be archived. What also is not in dispute is that DrDan has ongoing animosity with this cache owner. Based on that information and his self-described behavior, I'm not surprised that his email was not taken kindly. Many certainly would if the reviewer advised them that guardrails and signs are off limits. Now I understand your bias in this situation and that makes this all the more clearer -- I just learned that the CO is your sister! What? Next thing you know, we're going to find out Mr. Esoteric is his brother. Brother-in-law.
  20. You claim no animosity, but this story and your subsequent actions say otherwise.
  21. Tell ya what. Since you insist on deactivating your humor cells, That's the issue, everyone one of your "jokes" are not an attempt at "humor" but attempts at making fun of Micro's. It's really annoying. Especially if you like micro's. +1
  22. Tell ya what. Since you insist on deactivating your humor cells, treating that last comment of mine as if it were serious, I will answer in kind: It would not bother me in the slightest. If he tried and failed, that would demonstrate what I already know. That the places I choose to play in are cache friendly. I've spent years building close relationships with the land managers for the areas I play in, and unless I were to suddenly become a complete dimwit, I would think that I would be aware of any displeasure felt by these land managers long before it be ame an issue. If he tried and succeeded, this would tell me quite clearly that my caches are not welcome in those locations. Unlike some of the more vocal Virginia cachers in here, I actually care what the land managers/property owners think about us playing in their sand boxes. I find out before I play, and I honor their wishes. If those P&G fans who hid all the VDOT caches felt the same way, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Now don't you wish you had treated that like the humor it was? No. I am glad we have your full bias well known in this thread as it clearly influences your comments on this topic. I'm pretty sure if one were to dig around just a little in your area that he could find caches placed in your favorite caching spots without permission. It doesn't matter that YOU always get permission. He just needs to find a few bad apples and then make his case to the people that matter and he would probably have a good shot at getting the rest archived, including your properly placed caches with full permission. All it takes is someone with a mission and time to carry it out to get landowners stirred up to ruin it for everyone including those that are doing things right. And that is what I see here. drdan wasn't concerned about everyone else. He had a score to settle with one cacher and everyone else was collateral damage. Don't think it couldn't happen to you just because you are careful to follow all the rules.
  23. Groundspeak should have thought about this when they decided to start archiving the other APE caches. They should have thought about this when they started promoting this APE cache. They should have thought about this when this APE cache's lid was stolen. In short, Groundspeak should have known a while back that this day was coming. They had ample opportunity to reverse their policy and offer to let the other APE cache owners to unarchive their caches. They had ample opportunity to deal with this BEFORE someone stole the cache. It is a cache after all and caches are in the wild and subject to being stolen. But it would be disingenuous to change policy now only because the one APE cache that is near and dear to tptb is the one that goes missing.
  24. Again, it might be the same "to you", because things like the icon, the Trifecta and the suvenier are not important to you. To you, it's just another ammo can. Hopefully, I'll never get that jaded. But even the most cynical cacher should be able to grasp that things like the icon, the Trifecta and the souvenir might very well be important to others. I can assure you that achieving the Trifecta is important to me. If this means you have to discredit me by claiming I'm an icon junkie, I hope you'll reconsider. Typically I find both your caching and your Reviewer personas to be courteous and professional, and it does you no credit to insult those who you disagree with in this matter. Who's insulting someone? He's expressing his own caching aesthetics, much like you do. His just seem to be slightly more refined than yours. I guess I am the only one that understands where he's coming from. Because if I championed for the existence of the other caches only to have my concerns ignored time and time again, then I think I would definitely take the same stance as Briansnat when one of Groundspeak's pet caches went missing. Since they apparently took a hard line against all the other ape cache, then they had better take the same one with their favorite cache too. At least that's the way I see it.
  25. 70 feet? Roughly - yes. I didn't have tape measure with me but that sounds about right. I thought there had to be a minimum of 528 feet between caches.
