  1. Read the previous release notes

    Release Notes:

Premium Member Pocket Queries make a leap forward in two words: More and Easier.

    • More: Now Premium Members will be able to download twice as many Pocket Queries a day, from 5 to 10 PQ's a day.
    • Easier: All PQ's deliver a new custom email with a direct link to download the PQ in one click. Users must be logged into Geocaching.com to download the file directly.

With this update we're retiring the older system of including attachments for PQ's with 500 or fewer results. We've also reverted the change from "Unknown" to "Mystery" in GPX files, meaning that "?" caches will display and filter properly in those applications and devices that could not handle the terminology change.

This release also increased performance to a new email system.

I hope work will continue on PQ's... Like if one goes to "Hide & Seek" you have MANY search options including things like "Cache starts with..." the problem is the results cannot be filtered by things like "I have not found", "Is Enabled" etc. and to make it completely worthless it cannot be saved as a GPX file (you would think that premium members would have that option). So the solution, as I see it, is to copy all the great search parameter choices from "Hide & Seek" to "Create a PQ". But to make it even better allow multiple parameter use (EX: "Cache Starts with" + "Hidden by Username" Of course, keep all the current filter options as well!

Today (because I cannot do the above) I decided to just go with a Route Query but alas the Create Route function appears to be broken (does not respond to mouse clicks to set route start / end). So I have no choice but to add each cache to a bookmark list ONE AT A TIME Grrrrr. Even this could be improved with a suggestion that I submitted a couple years ago --- support "drag box" and / "multi-select" on maps to add to a bookmark list.

Hey - completely unrelated to this but a huge THANKS for your work on trail maps Moun10Bike!

  2. I have tried creating a route on Hwy 58 in Oregon from I-5 to Hwy 97 by clicking the map for start and end but all that happens when I click the map is the "open hand" (move) changes to a "closed hand". I have tried it from my Profile page (Create Route) and from a Pocket Query with the same results. I also tried both Firefox and Chrome (latest versions) in case it was a browser issue. I have done route queries in the past with no trouble so what could I be doing wrong?

  3. I am a beginning cacher and this has been a rough few weeks. First, the Geomate Jr. device I first used and still enjoy will no longer be made by its manufacturer and cannot be updated for caches created after 12/30/2011. I use my Mac laptop to find caches, read the logs and then print out the first page and hybrid satellite map. Today I went to do this before heading out for an errand in another neighborhood, thinking I would find a cache. I seriously thought the site was broken and came back this evening to discover what went wrong. I was just starting to feel confident in my growing geosense capabilities and now I'm not sure how well i'll be able to do at all.

We're going on vacation in NC and FL for a couple of weeks, I hope I can find some caches. Even non techies enjoy going for walks with the prospect of finding something. I know I've gotten outside more on not so pretty days because of it.

I wonder how the handheld gps manufacturers are doing. Is the community of geocachers growing fast enough to sell a steadily increasing number of devices?

  4. The new maps are AWFUL! There are 17 lakes within a 20 mile radius of my home and NONE of them shows on the new map unless the satellite map is chosen. Yeah they show narrow foot paths but they don't show a 700 acre lake! I can't use the sat maps because they take several minutes to load on a 15Mbs connection. Then if I move them an inch it's another several minutes to update. Sometimes they just freeze showing three or four blocks and the rest blank. OK I get the cost issue but these maps really are terrible.

I note that OpenCaching.com uses Bing maps which are FAR superior to these. I suppose they can do that because they have a low hit volume?

I agree with many of the posters that suggested only letting premium members have access to Google Maps. I also agree with a higher membership fee.

In the meantime I will hope cache owners will list their caches on OpenCaching.com as well. It is all free and uses Bing maps which are fast and detailed and while not as good as Google IMHO they are a Hell of a lot better than the current abomination here!

  6. Wow! Lots of negatives about the beta! I love it (sort of) - I love the speed compared with the old map but of course I miss the smilies and PMO like everyone else and also the ability to bookmark (or log) from the "balloon" without jumping to the full listing page. I understand that the smilies and PMO will be fixed next week. That is great news! Can't wait for the final release. Thanks!!

  7. I love the speed of the Beta Map compared to the standard. But will you eventually add all the links on the left of the standard map to the beta map? Of course if one thinks of the Beta Map as just one of those links I guess it is really not an issue is it? I also love the fact that the Beta Map opens to my home location! Nice job! Guess I will have to pay my dues to support this fine work!!
