  7. quote: 1. The connection speed has nothing to do with it. What was probably trashing the geocaching servers was the database being pummelled by too many requests. Relational databases (of which SQL Server is an instance) take up huge amounts of memory, CPU and disk IO. Do you know just how much memory, Processing power and disk I/O it will actually require? I can’t see it being a problem…..thats if his server is up to the grade ofcourse. I mean if he has at least 1gb of DDR, a P4 2.8 and a decent Intel chipset MB with RAID capability and 2 100gb Hard Drives then it should be up to this sort of task. If his server doesn’t make the garde then he should think about upgrading. quote: It is conceivable that if they have too many pages cached then the performance of the file system will degrade (in human speak: it'll take too long to search through the folder to find the file). That sort of problem can be got round easily though. I strongly disagree that this is conceivable, the performance of any file system depends on its structure and stability, there could be a number of reasons as to why it would downgrade depending on which file system Jeremy (!) is using on his servers, it could be FAT or NTFS. I would say an NTFS file system would not be as easy to degrade as a FAT 16 or 32, due to its known stability with XP and 2000, therefore I personally think that it will be able to handle it- assuming he does have an NTFS file system and Windows 2000 server. quote: 2. This caching thing is even more confusing than you might think. You can have caches on the CPU to speed up memory access, caches in memory to speed up disc access, caches on disc to speed up db access or access to slower things like tapes and so on and you can and do have all of those caches at once. We computer people refer to them all as caches because if I.T. isn't confusing, nobody will pay us any money There are in fact several different "layers" of cache in a modern PC, each acting as a buffer for recently-used information to improve performance, but when "the cache" is mentioned without qualifiers, it normally refers to the "secondary" or "level 2" cache that is placed between the processor and system RAM. quote: 3. Please make an effort to at least spell my and Jeremy Irish's name correctly. Do YOU call me Benjamin? Or Pid? hehe Pid Ben Piddington http://www.buckscaching.co.uk

  10. Much clearer thanks good shepards! Although I disagree it is simpler the way it is now, cached pages/memorized ones are fine by me..I would say it depends what sort of connection speeds people run on or what speed Jeremie's server runs at. The more space taken up on his Server will mean a slower response time for all user accessing it, especially user 1 in your example. Pid xxx Ben Piddington http://www.buckscaching.co.uk

  12. Hi Nia... About the New Forest idea...I would think twice about that one, there has been controvesery surrounding it before if you look at earlier threads. Also after doing you cache in the middle of several HUNDRED THOUSAND Fir trees near Silverstone I would give forests a wide birth if I were you. HeHe Out of interest...Why did you plant a cache right in the middle of that place? its deadly. Pid Ben Piddington http://www.buckscaching.co.uk
  13. Hi Nia. I think your talking about Electro Magnetism....the thing where the particles..Atoms....vibrate and become magnetic. From what I learnt less than 2years ago it doesnt last long. Perhaps you could explain a little more indepth about what it is you are trying to do and everyone can offer more help...perhaps alternatives or more suggestions or something. All the best Pid Ben Piddington http://www.buckscaching.co.uk

  20. It isnt about finding Spelling mistakes insulting attall,,,,its about getting it right----Who cares about the mistakes,,,its the not mistakes that I reckon are the matter its the look of the page and the getting it right. But like I say if the page looks good and is presentable and has had time gone into it then who is going to care? Pid Ben Piddington http://www.buckscaching.co.uk
  21. Ok I am not going to side with my co-hort here and say that spelling doesnt matter attall. I think it is important to make the cache page look presentable. I will adhere here and also state that if you look at the caches Dan and I have planted you will see alot of work and effort has gone into making the pages look nice and stand out. I would say that making the splling as good as the page is the right way to go BUT it doesn't essentially matter in the long run...I mean if the page looks really good then who is going to notice the odd spelling mistake. Afterall we created the laguage we speak its English....I know for one thing I am glad it isn't unreadable. Keep Caching Pid Ben Piddington http://www.buckscaching.co.uk
