  1. What everyone else said. The fun is finding the caches. Not sitting at home and armchair logging.
  2. Close enough for a ding. The Jersey is red polka dot and the year was 1984.
  3. Wiggins crashed out really early this year. I don't think he held the Yellow Jersey at any point. But to clarify. Who was the last brit to hold a jersey of any colour at the end of the tour de france on the Champs-Élysées
  4. Mark Cavendish has just become the first Brit to win the green jersey in the tour de france. It's been a long time since we won any jersey of colour. Who was the last brit to win a tour de france jersey?, What colour was it and what year was it?
  5. The eyeballs in the sky are an annual phenominon to the residents of the pooliverse. They actually belong to the family dog of the Perishers comic strip. Every year they go on holiday and the dog looks into a favourite rockpool (the pooliverse). This is known by the residents of the pool as the eyeballs in the sky.
  6. I guess the question to ask yourself is will moving it to Devon help it to fulfull it's mission? In this case get to the USA. Can you move it close to an airport? Or is there somewhere in Devon that is likly to attract many American tourists?
  7. The other day I fell over and badly sprained my ankle. Unfortunately I was 4 miles into an 8 mile hike so I tied up my boots tight and hobbled the remaining 4 miles home. My ankle looked great the next few days. And when I first started caching I had so many small cuts all over my arms that more than one person at work (i'm a psychiatric nurse) pulled me to one side and asked if I was self harming.
  8. Ok..seeing it's my turn for a question....easy one What do the rings on the Olympic flag/banner represent? AFAIK Unity of nations. They are linked and they represent at least one colour of every world flag.
  9. Some might argue that the original message was in fact the worst bit. The GS guidelines do state that Geocaches do not solicit for any purpose. Geocaches perceived to be posted for religious, political, charitable or social agendas are not permitted. Geocaching is intended to be a light and enjoyable family-friendly hobby, not a platform for an agenda. Indeed they do... but trackables are not geocaches. A trackable can promote a charity or whatever they want to. Ahh well i'll get off me soapbox than. Well that answers the question as to who had written the obscene addition to the message then? Not really. I just read the whole thing before you.
  10. The point isn't to hack at the GAGB. The point is that they seem to be telling everyone that they are our representatives. And furthermore they are acting as such (and making promises as such) in front of organisations such as the police. What if I were to set myself up as the GAUK and then promise the police that we would stop putting geocaches out and recall all of the ones that are currently out? Then someone else has to go and tell the poilce that actually I was being an idiot. But I have a mandate from 100% of the membership to act (i'm the only member). So the GAGB are well meaning yes. And they probably are the best people for the job. But unless they are official (linked to Groundspeak as the UK representatives) then they have no mandate to act like this.

  13. From reading the several threads related to the Weatherby incident it seems that many people feel that the GAGB are acting with no mandate to make decisions which affect us all. So I thought that maybe it would be a good idea now to have some discussion as to the percieved and actual roles of the GAGB to everyone on this site. Lets try and keep things civil though. And to start with i'll explain my starting position. It seems to me that in the wake of the Weatherby incident that someone probably needed to do something. And to be honest the GAGB are as good as anyone. I have a few concerns though because it seems that they were acting with no mandate and making decisions with the authorities that effect everyone and would be very hard to reverse (strolling up to the ACPO and saying 'sorry they were acting without our consent.' is unlikly to win us any popularity with the police). Secondly it seems that we all agree to be bound by the Groundspeak rules when we sign up. However have we ever agreed to be bound by the GAGB guidelines? It's not that they aren't a useful tool, just that if they are enforced as rules then surely we need to have agreed to abide by these rules rather than the generic Groundspeak ones. Thirdly are the revievers allowed to enforce the GAGB guidelines above the Groundspeak ones?
  14. I'm not sure it really matters. You are deliberately misinterpreting the rule. But if you want to be extra carefull on a nature reserve then that seem like it's a no bad thing.
  15. In 2002 Former PM John Major ended up with egg on his face. Why?
  16. Downing Street has been the home of Lords of the Treasury since the 18th century when Walpole persuaded Mr Chicken to give up No 10. The 'formal' title of the Prime Minister is First Lord of the Treasury. 'Prime Minister' was AFAICT a partly flippant title that Walpole gave himself but it's stuck and First Lords of the Treasury have been called that ever since. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is Second Lord of the Treasury. So we have the First Lord at No 10; the Second at No 11; and so No 12 should be the residence of the Third Lord of the Treasury, if that post still exists. Don't think there is a third lord... but you're on the right lines. Chief whip?
  17. Oh I have a lunckbox hidden within 100m of a hospital. I am not suggesting that these rules are good. I personally think it's something of an over reaction. But if this is a genuine need to remove anything large enough to cause a large explosion then just because you have said you don't mind it being in your garden shouldn't make any difference.
  18. 1. The problem isn't simply "people acting furtively", it's "people acting furtively" PLUS "package that might conceivably be a bomb". 2. Education doesn't work, except very very slowly. You can't suddenly educate geocachers to behave more responsively, that's a very long term project. And you can't educate the public to know about geocaching, there's no channel for doing that, except very very slowly. 3. Any rule must be simple and enforcable. So I suggest "Any urban cache must be a micro". Where urban means "within 25 meters of inhabited buildings" and micro means "35mm, keysafe, or smaller". Sorry Alan, this would mean my poor little front garden cache - which most finders today remark on the size of it ("nice big cache") - would have to go. I don't think so. So the suggested guideline would need to be ammended to read: "Any urban cache must be a micro, where urban means within 25 meters of inhabited buildings and micro means 35mm, keysafe, or smaller; unless the cache is placed with the landowner's permission." - the last phrase is, of course, redundant as all caches have to have the landwoner's permission. Nope. If the point of the guideline is to stop people from calling in suspect packages then it doesn't really matter if it's in your front garden or not. It would just have to go.
  19. So industrial units and office blocks are fair game then? You need to substitute "houses" with "buildings". But then you'll need to rely on a judgement call and info to the reviewer to differentiate buildings like barns, farmhouses, bus shelters, ad inf in rural areas ................ How about 'inhabited buildings'?
