  1. I am sooooooo going thru withdrawl! Fri my mom and I went downstate for a football game, and I got back last night. This morning I was, and have been totally jonesing for a fix, man.
  2. We don't really change our caches either. But what we carry will probably change a bit. As in more layers of clothes, gloves, hats, etc. When we place our caches, we try o think "winter friendly", so we don't need to go and reposition.

  4. What my contact with the MN group of cachers told me was that thier DNR is "studying the sport" prior to making any policy.
  5. Hi there! I'm wondering just how the Missouri DNR policy is working so far? My contacts in PA indicate that getting any new caches with thier DCNR has been a very slow process that takes months. In MN that DNR has banned caching in state parks, and in WI we're waiting to hear. Back home in MI, we're operating under a kind of "Gentlemen's Agreement". Any feedback anout your state's experience with it's DNR would be helpful, thx.
  6. This is going to be a great event TeamSandrich is looking forward to seeing old friends and making new friends.
  7. I have been trying since about 10am this morning. (As opposed to 10am tonight?) Which also explains why the MiGO patch in our sigs isn't coming thu.
  8. quote:Originally posted by Cannonlaw: I lived in Michigan in the mid 80's do people still "Say Yes! to Michigan"? Absolutely!! BTW MiGO now has about 640+ members.
  9. Hello WI! Ihope that everything goes well "next door" (I'm in MI). As soon as you have any news, I will be very interested to hear as we are trying to get a good working relationship established with our state's DNR. Good luck!
  10. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:. There must be some method of guaranteeing that the cache has been removed. I like MIGO's idea. Thx! It should be noted that the MiGO method is completely voluntary This means that that the entire process depends on our members willingness to help out. All of us in MiGO feel very fortunate that our members seem to always "rise to the occasion" We also hve a wonderful atmosphere in our forums that encourages anybody and everybody to find thier voice. I think that this kind of belonging is what is helping our sport to further it's cause in our state.
  11. The Natl Park Service banned Geocaching onall it's lands because of a bad experience it had in the NorthEast a couple of years ago. So it's not just the "attitude of the agencies who administer these areas", but more importantly the interaction with our sport that will define that relationship. Make no mistake about it, each and evry land use agency does, or will, have a relationship with regards to Geocaching. It is our responsiblity to help define that relationship in favorable terms. Each and every Geocacher should be concerned with the Regional, State, County, and Muncipal agencies that exert control over our land. The real question is; what are you going to do in order to help?
  12. You don't really need reflective tape for night caches! Check out Sandrich's "Starry starry night" cache, and also Sandrich's "Eek, Squeek, Who, and Phew" caches as well. Neither was done with tape. Be creative with your night caches, they will come ;-p
  13. TeamSandrich started off with an old Garmin from 1992! then, when we went to an event last fall, a buddy showed us his eTrex Vista. We were hooked then and there! We got one and have luved it since...
  14. Also, if anybody needs to learn how to use a pda for caching, point your browser to www.mi-geocaching.org and then go to the Geocaching in the Palm of your Hand article. that will explain in easy to understand terms how to make Pocket queries play nicely with your Palm OS.
  15. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:Unfortunately, you may well have jeopardized the existence of those 15 caches by drawing the authorities attention to them. You may get the opportunity to place one or two caches with approval, but I'm sure you won't be making a lot of friends among the local geocaching community if that causes their caches to be removed. Then some earnest, well-meaning geocacher comes along and demands that they officially sanction the sport, which opens up a big can of beans...and the results are often not favorable for the geocaching community. [This message was edited by BrianSnat on August 03, 2003 at 08:43 AM.] Absolutely not! If our sport is to become legitimized that means we need to become involved with the process itself. Sticking our heads in the sand and pretending that it doesn't matter won't work anymore. It is unfortunate that a few caches might have to be moved or archived, but it would be even more of a disaster if those state officials ruled that "Geo Trashing" was off limits statewide since no one stepped up to the plate to explain, inform, and invite along. Bilder is doing the right thing, and doing it the right way! If you have any questions, bilder, please email me.
  16. quote:Originally posted by Micqn:Originally posted by Laogai on cache page: quote:This is simply Geo-Litter. It shouldn't be counted as dead until proven dead. Absolutely! While nobody wants Geo-Litter to trash up our sport, a cache shouldn't be counted out until someone physically verifies the condition (or lack of). There are some caches that do quite nicely without an owner, and some that get adopted during an owner's abscence, pending that owner's return. In our state, MiGO has taken a leadership role in these areas (mostly due to the never ceasing efforts of the Admin of the site )
  17. Yup, the National Park Service, (or Nazi Park Snobs) will not tolerate any caching on "thier" land. Given the current administration's lack of environmental policy (other than to destroy it for money) I doubt that will change.
  18. I use a Palm m515 and it's just fine for outdoor viewing. You can get some deals online at the Palm store, but be prepared to pay about $250.00. You should, however, get some free goodies to go along with the open box special.
  19. TeamSandrich couldn't give a flip about body counts We cache for fun, we enjoy the experience, who cares about the totals? We do know some cachers that are on a mission to get to the 1,000th find, and wish them well. But don't expect us to be racing along at much faster than a snail's pace...
  20. If who didn't ask? And what shouldn't we have not asked? Perhaps we should all have stuck our heads in the sand and pretend that the various land use agencies would never of heard of Geocaching? Or maybe you are referring to the cachers in the state of Ohio? Because the USFW replied to an inquiry from the officials of that state. So, maybe nobody should have ever tried to do anything proper and right for our sport and just ignorantly stumble along? Thank you! Thank you for your absolute lack of knowledge of this whole situation, thank you for your lack of courage in suggesting that we blithely ignore regulations and laws, thus setting a great examlpe for others to follow. Thank you for responding in such a way as to alleviate yourself from ANY obligation to roll up your own sleeves and try to get something positive done. Thank you for taking the easy way out, and not even trying to consider an alternative. Oh yes, High Desert Fish; thank you for your oh so valuable input on how to merely bellyache and not have a substantial comment.
  21. The only problem with trying to deal with the USFW is that, as per my telephone cal with Mr. Bradley Johnson (Chief of Financial Aid; USFW), any and all requests for Geocaching to be considered either compatible or not compatible with regards to Pittman-roberts funded lands must come exclusively from the appropriate State officials. Any type of request of this nature will only be considered if it does come from the state; not the public, not a special interest group, only the state. I don't like this type of system that effectively tells me that as a taxpayer I really have NO say in what is happenning. This is espcially frustrating as we all know that these P-R funded lands are used for other purposes than just hunting or fishing. But thats what we got to work with. Sooooo, we are trying to get onboard with the DNR here in Michigan, and work internally for our goal.
  22. As much as I personally like the idea, I don't think it actually would work. What MiGO has been doing is trying very hard to develop our relationships with the land use agencies all over the state. I wish I had more news that was substantial, but for now I don't. The only thing that I can say, is that our efforts have been paying off with other agencies besides just the DNR. And with respect to the DNR, the other departments are (mostly) not bound by Pittman-Roberts funding, and those areas have not banned Geocaching. So MiGO is in this for the long haul, and this will take quite a bit of time to get sorted out. When I have something else substantial to report, I will be happy to do so. Until then, I am just going to continue to do my job.
  23. sommd, wow! It sounds like the IDNR does not want any nonvirtual caches there! That's quite a list of hoops to jump through, before and after approval. Hopefully you (or someone in your state) can interface with the IDNR decision makers and perhaps get Geocaching on a more user-friendly basis? Yeah, I know, easier said than done! (Really, I do know!) thanx fo rthe update.
  24. Any resemblance between the strange object found in the museum and the object on the wall behind the "Disinformation Minister" is purely coincedental...
