What about a oneway hike of 0.8km? Is it <1 or <10 (as you may want to get back to your car)? Hmmm... I personaly would mention it in the listing description anyway.
  2. OK, let me be first. We joke that anyone who wants the job probably has something wrong with them. Wait, I am one! ~erik~ Edited to add: Yes, it is nice of you to volunteer. Have a happy 2010! Ok, I got the point, even before I was posting To be honest: beeing a reviewer is the last I want to do. I prefer supporting the community by logging their caches and place own from time to time. Beeing more honest: I somewhere heard, that Groundspeak was sending mail to people who introduced themself as reviewer. Content: "herewith we confirm, that XYZ has introduced him/herself as reviewer, and will never be nominated as one" (or something like this). I wanted to get such a mail. Nothing happened so far... Hope I won't get banned now BTW: (@erik) many (older) cacher are missing you here in .AT Don't you want to come back, pleeease? And: I'm used to hear jokes about myself (and my picture)
  3. Hi all, AFAIK one gets nominated to become a reviewer. What can I do to get nominated ? I really want to get some responsibility... Regards, SH
  4. Hi all, thanks for all your answers, they all helped a lot Here in Austria the situation seems to be a little different than in the US, as the stations are set up by just one single authority, and they do it since over two centuries. So as a summary: a foreign tourist, that does not want to get in too deep into "Benchmarking" (without the space), but wants to find some "drive-by" benchmarks (because he wants to concentrate on locations like Arches or Bryce NP ) 1. should avoid the "scaled" BMs, as they may need a lot of effort to find them 2. should not bother to transform NAD to WGS For going for benchmarks at home I will try to deal with Waymarking.com Thanks again, Philipp
  5. Hi there, for me as european Benchmarking is excotic, although there are (of course) similar installations here in the old world :-) This year I could manage to find two benchmarks in Los Angeles, and I'm preparing a longer journey to south west USA for next year. And here's my question: The location of a benchmark has to be known very accurate, as they are used to be the reference for other geodetic measurements. On the other hand, coordinates for "scaled" BM are said to be (un-)exact for up to a quarter mile. That is, in my point of view, not really accurate Is it that just Groundspeak (or the public) does not receive the "accurate" data for these BMs? How is one checking the border of an estate with +/-200yrd? A second question: the coordinates in the Data Sheets are given in NAD. I've read somewhere that the difference to WGS84 is way below the accuracy of a consumer GPS. Is that correct? Can I use the NAD coordinates in WGS without being directed to the neighbour state? Thanks for informations, Phil/Schuhhirsch, Austria
  6. AFAIK these people were "banned", not downgraded. I became Basic this morning, too, although I've payed (monthly) til november 28th
  7. The new way the images are shown is mumbojumbo in my eyes. The old method with a hover-preview was _much_ faster and better to use. Now it looks like made by a child that discovered a flash assistant in his webpage editor. Does the zoom-warp-flash-bang-preview has any impact to the transfered data volume? I hope not, but I'm waiting to monday morning to see if there is an improvement (but I doubt it). Please, if you need to prove you can handle animations, let the user decide by introducing a way to shut this thing off within the profile. Thank you.
  8. Hello dutch cacher, on an Event last week I heard about a cache in Amsterdam, where the container is hidden in a completely overgrown car wreck. I was not able to find the description of this cache, so maybe a local cacher can give me the name of the cache. Lalex and I will visit Amsterdam on the next weekend. Thanks in advance, Schuhhirsch
  9. Shouldn't someone who can handle a GPSr recognize a road or a train track when he closes in? Don't search for caches, if you are afraid of the 'outer world'.
  10. Hello hungarian Geocacher, my name is Schuhhirsch and I'm planning to stay for two or three days in Budapest at the end of January. Beside of sightseeing, I will maybe search for some caches together with my girlfriend. For caching I usually use a PDA with pathaway and a bluetooth GPSR, together with a conventional Garmin3 Unfortunately I was not able to find detailed electronic maps of Budapest. So I scanned a tourist map from downtown and will calibrate it with TTQV, to use it on my PDA with Pathaway. So far so good. The problem is, that this map has no reference information except the north-direction and the scale. What I need is now some coordinates of points that I can locate on the map. The area of the map is: northern limit: "Centenariumi emlekmü" on Margitsziget southern limit: "Petöfi hid" western limit: "Martirok"-Monument/Gesztenyes kert eastern limit: "Puskas Ferenc Stadion" (please excuse the non-use of hungarian characters, but german keyboards... ) Could anybody of you provide me with helpful information, for example: "the center of the crossing of "Üllöi ut" with "Ferenc körut" (700m southeast of "Nemzeti Muzeum" has the coordinates N12 34.567 E12 34.567" Thank you for your help and assistance, happy caching , Schuhhirsch
