  1. Does anyone want to adopt this cache GC361JH http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC361JH_7y in Lancashire, NW England? It's a regular find but I can't commit to maintaining it anymore as I don't live that close to it.
  2. Don't think you should stop caching altogether; just think you should stop trying to own a cache that you can't maintain. Let that one be archived and hide a new cache near where you do live. There's a very good reason why vacation caches are generally not allowed, and your situation with this cache is a perfect example. Fair enough. There is someone local who will maintain it (and has already replaced the lost cache) she just doesn't want to own it.
  3. Why not just place one local to where you live, so you can maintain it? You seem to have placed a 'Vacation Cache' that you are unable to maintain... Place one near to home, and cache on! TBH I want to stop owning any as I don't have time to be as involved as I used to be. Pesky kids and job having to take priority! It was cool owning the most westerly one on Skye for a while tho! I've slowly archived all the others I placed that I moved away from.
  4. I felt like I was being chided by the reviewer when I'd replied to the first note posted by the reviewer within minutes of it being posted, and then having had my reply ignored (for whatever reason). The reply about why it was important it was a note was helpful as I'd not realised that. But it doesn't stop the feeling of not knowing what you are doing and being told off whenever you do it wrong. The bit about writing a *log* in the note the reviewer posted comes after a hefty quote and I simply missed it when I read the email I got sent notifying me of the note that had been posted. And as for not being a new user, I haven't been caching for ages so feel like a newbie again. fair enough only there's no one to own the cache locally so we're back to the headache I had in the first place trying to get it approved when I don't live near it! Maybe I should just stop caching all together!! Thanks
  5. Hi, observations willingly taken, thanks for replying. I didn't see the bit in the original note/log/item posted by the reviewer asking for a note to be logged so my bad for not posting a note. But I did get straight in touch with the reviewer explaining it's inaccessible in the winter and that I was asking the local cachers to check it out for me when they could (which has now been done). But yes, I understand that a note would have been easier. TBH as a less experienced cacher and owner I find the site really unintuitive to navigate and all the different semantics of the different things to be done is also confusing. So from a less experienced cachers perspective please understand why it's annoying to have responded within minutes of the original note having been posted by the reviewer to then feel chided for not doing something, when in fact you'd accidentally not done it exactly as had been asked for. I have also written to the reviewer twice in the interim, with the cache info as requested and with the send my email address checked and still had no reply *before* the second note was logged. Again, it's not obvious to newer members that the reviewer won't get alerted, I don't know if they're watching the cache or what! Again with the disable note, I had put that in the email. I like geocaching for the adventures and the walks and the hidden places you wouldn't otherwise find. Not the endless administration and the feeling of being a naughty child when it's not done exactly to the rules Thanks again for the reply and explanation, it makes a lot more sense now. Hopefully the reviewer will be able to reply to the emails I and the local cacher have now sent explaining what is happening when they get time
  6. My frustration stems from the fact that my response to the original note was ignored, not that I've not had a response to the most recent activity. As for the cache sitting unattended for months, it's actually inaccessible during the winter so could only be checked once the snow started to melt, hence the delay.
  7. Thanks. Given that the reviewer ignored the message I sent them, despite doing it the way they had asked *as well* as doing it on the cache too it's a bit frustrating. The local cacher doesn't want to take ownership of it but is happy to do maintenance.
  8. I've had a problem with maintaining a cache which is now resolved. However in the interim one of the reviewers has archived the cache and isn't responding to messages I have sent them, despite doing it in the way they have specified they want it. How can I get it re-enabled? Thanks.
  9. <claps> agree totally. It was ACE and such a lovely camping atmosphere. Can't wait for next years!
  10. I thought that, but pretty sure someone here demonstrated that it can actually hold 5000 caches without noticeable lag. The 2k limit mentioned in the manual is waypoints, we all just assumed that included caches But when I have tried to load more than 2000 caches it crashes and white screens.. I had bought an extra external micro sd card in the hope of bypassing this but that doesn't work either. Sigh
  11. Thanks. It's happening randomly with all sorts of GPX files tho, all created with pocket queries for a different area etc. I always clear off unused cache info as I move about so much and it can only hold 2000 caches so it's easier to delete all previous caches and upload the new ones each time. I've logged a support issue with Garmin and am waiting for them to respond. It does sound like it's faulty. I'm not sure how you mean delete. The surest way to delete is to connect to a PC and delete all the files in the \Garmin\GPX folder or do a master reset https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={d10af480-1fc5-11e1-73d0-000000000000}. Yep. That's what I do. Altho with a mac ;-) There have been instances of Garmin products that don't respond well to MAC dust (various files that MACs leave in file systems). Perhaps that is related to your white screen troubles. Well I use both, but a mac mainly. I've also been using base camp as the main tool in the hope that a garmin specific product would work better but maybe not... Will see what garmin say anyways. Thanks for the replies and help

  13. In a way it's good to know it's not a widespread issue as hopefully that means I shall get a replacement unit!

  15. Thanks, that's helpful as I hadn't thought about it being faulty! I shall ring Garmin tomorrow.
  16. I recently upgraded to a Garmin etrex 30 unit and have been enjoying using it but I keep getting issues with it freezing and giving me a white screen which is getting very frustrating. The first time it happened I traced the problem back to having tried to transfer too many caches to the device by accident. When I tried to view the hint or recent log info from the trip computer screen it would give me a white screen and freeze and the only way to reboot is to remove the batteries and power up again. However, recently I have had the same issue happen randomly. Are other people finding this problem? How are you resolving it? It's infuriating at the moment as it will appear to be working properly and be stable when all of a sudden it will crash. The other aspects of the device seem to work OK once it's powered up again, but I am unable to retrieve any of the paperless geocaching features and the compass also loses the needle making it hard to navigate accurately (the distance to destination still works). Apols if this has been discussed elsewhere, a quick search didn't reveal anything. Cheers Becka/beetlebug54
  17. WOOOHOOOOO!!!! A lovely friendly Skye cacher has agreed to look after it when I am not there so hopefully it can be enabled now. Thanks so much for the reply and support. I found 8 caches there last week whilst on holiday. First time I have had success tho as was using an actual GPS, previously I'd had no signal on my phone to even attempt! Happy Beetlebug54
  18. WOOOHOOOOO!!!! A lovely friendly Skye cacher has agreed to look after it when I am not there so hopefully it can be enabled now. I didn't really want to get into an appeals process so am glad someone has offered to help out. Thanks so much for the replies and support glad I wasn't the only one to be a bit !! Happy Beetlebug54
  19. bizarre!! It's not. It's moi. And I is a human being lol!!
  20. That's absolutely ridiculous! Anyone who can guarantee to be able to visit their cache within a month is well able to meet the maintenance rule. Anyway, a positive suggestion, have you tried posting your request on the UK Forum? I have no doubt you will get a better response there. Good luck with your cache It's frustrating! Thanks so much for pointing out to me there is a UK specific forum, have x-posted on there now too fingers crossed
  21. I laid a cache on the Isle of Skye a few days ago, but need a local cacher to act as a proxy owner in order for it to be enabled... I visit every month so anticipate minimal contact will be needed from anyone kind enough to agree to help me out, but the rules say it can't be enabled unless someone on the island agrees to accept responsibility for it. I've told the reviewer I visit every month but he still wants a local cacher to accept responsibility for when I am not there. The cache is safe and dry and has an initial log book for 132 logs. There's a travel bug and everything in it so if nothing else it would be great for it to be enabled for that to be taken and then I can disable it and remove it the next time I visit if no one wants to maintain it for longer. I've messaged two local Skye geocachers but not had any replies as yet hence posting a plea on here. It's a very special cache and would mean the world to me if someone could help out to get it enabled. If you can help me, please reply and we can discuss more off forum The co-ordinates are N 57° 25.797 W 006° 46.831. Yours in hope...! Becka/beetlebug54
  22. I agree. If you are there once a month, there shouldn't be a problem. I have caches that are 20 miles away that would take me longer than a month to attend to. That's what I thought but it's not allowed annoyingly. Am frustrated as it has a travel bug in it and was a well thought out cache. I'd never leave one somewhere I couldn't get back to.
  23. Yeah I did that, but they are still requesting that I find a local cacher to help maintain it. It's well stocked in terms of a log book for over 100 sigs to begin with and is safe and dry.
  24. Yes I did but they are requesting that I still find a local cacher to own it for me. I was hoping it would be sufficient too as I wouldn't lay a cache somewhere I wasn't able to get back to it to maintain it.
