  1. quote:Originally posted by Volwrath:Ya know thats a very interesting question. I never see any posts about the Lowrance units. Why is that? Seems like a rather obvious answer. A search of 'lowrance' in subject lines on these forums reveals 34 hits. That's probably right in line with thier consumer market share compared to Garmin and Magellan.. Unless you're looking for them, you never see posts about them for the same reason you never see them in stores and you never see them in people's hands. ApK
  2. quote:Originally posted by Runaround:Found a perfectly good Leatherman tool on a trail near a cache. It was still in the sheath but the belt loop was torn. To bad for someone, great for me. Now where did I park my car??????? http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/monkes.gif Yikes! For the record, mine has my name engraved on the side, and I'm easily found on-line. . . please return if found! ApK
  3. Note 1. Personally, I think the Chili Macaroni MREs are quite tastey, as long as you have some Tums or Rolaids to go with them. Note 2. Why on Earth are people so unendingly interested in finding ways to put food in caches? Have y'all completely run out of ideas that stay within posted guidelines? ApK
  4. quote:Originally posted by garrettmaster1:What do you use your GPSR for besides geocaching? I use mine in the car regularly, especially when in unfamiliar areas. It's helped me find shortcuts and corrected many bad directions. ApK
  5. quote:Originally posted by Ruprex:Hey folks, I'm looking for YOUR links to companies that sell ammo cans and Decon containers. Actually, I'm looking for links for cheap containers of any kind that you've used for geocaching. Every ammo box I have came from The Sportsman's Guide. I like them not only for their interesting selection of stuff and good prices, but because they have the best people working the phones of any company I've ever dealt with. If you happen to need ammo, you can often get an ammo box included free (ammo in an ammo box...how novel), and other times they have specials on lots of 4 or 5 boxes at a time. ApK
  6. quote:Originally posted by Team JOYSON:http://www.wpdpi.com/pi.shtml That site has a link to info about the book "The Joy of Pi" which I just recently got from audible.com. Very cool book, if you're into Pi...learn how Pi helped acquit O.J. Simpson! ApK
  7. quote:Originally posted by Kodak's4: I think that probably ALL math jokes are bad jokes. Lemme try again: A little boy needed help with a math problem. He first approached a mathamatician and asked "What is 9 divided by 2? The mathamatician procedes to write out an equation and then digresses into a proof of pi's irrational and transcendental nature. An hour into that, the boy gives up and approaches an engineer with the same question. The engineer answers "9/2? Oh, it's around 4." The boy then approaches an accountant with the same question, and the account leans over and whispers conspiratorially: "What you WANT 9/2 to be?" ApK
  8. quote:Originally posted by Kodak's4: I think that probably ALL math jokes are bad jokes. What do you call the ratio of a jack'o'lantern's circumference to it's diameter? Pumpkin Pi. Yeah, I think you're right. ApK

  11. quote:Originally posted by sbukosky:GPS is Global Positioning SATTELITE. . . . Thus nobody on earth, except maybe NASA and the military, have a GPS. Clearly, without additional qualification, "GPS" is widely understood to stand for "Global Positioning System" although in some contexts it does mean anything from "Global Positioning Satellite", to "Guarenteed Parts and Service" However, even the most official-seeming sources vary on how "GPS" actually should be used. What we all call "GPS" is properly called NAVSTAR GPS by the folks who run it. and so "a GPS" would be a more generic term for any system which tells your position on the globe. This take is supported by the cell phone industry, which has taken to marking new location-enabled phones as having "built-in GPS." They are usually referring to some terrestrial-based positioning service, unrelated to the satellite based system we know and love. On the other hand, many notable sites, including some Navy and Air Force sites, refer to "The Global Positioning System" when talking about NAVSTAR, suggesting that they use "the GPS" to mean that one specific service. My personal opinion on usage: Understand what your trying to say, be clear on the point your trying to get across, use the terminology you think best serves your message and know enough about the various usages to be able to tell anyone who tells you that your usage is wrong why they're wrong. 13. quote:Originally posted by Ninja Vanish:would it be in bad taste to just log it, because its really annoying seeing it every time If you want to avoid offending the people who are offended by such things, I wonder if a "note" log would get it off your list? ApK
  14. quote:Originally posted by Cabernet:Why doesn't somebody come up with a new standard. For the amp or two that is needed to run cellphones, gpsr's, radar detectors and the like, wouldn't something like a 1/8 plug do just as good and be a lot less bulky?. Some ham radio operators have standardized on this connector for car power. ApK
  15. quote:Originally posted by "The Postman":Has anyone noticed that the quality of products, and amount of product the dollar stores has gone down. Recently, a dollar store here had a supply of laser pointers I picked up for cache prizes. They also had headphones and other electronic stuff. Not much of that sort the last few visits, however. ApK
  16. quote: Therefore, in a British car _expect_ your speedo to be wrong. Of course, why would the speedo be different than any other part. Of course, the speedo in a British car is probably very accurate most of the time, reading zero, while the car sits in the mechanic's garage. Kidding. Just kidding. ApK

  18. quote:Originally posted by BassoonPilot: quote:Originally posted by sbukosky:... For example, a rocket going straight up at 1,000MPH has an actual ground speed of zero. 19. quote:Originally posted by sbukosky:I think it is safe to say that most geocachers prefer to be inconspicuous. I HOPE that's not true...I hope Geocachers try to be inconspicious out of neccessity...to prevent caches from being plundered or causing fear among the paranoid. I certainly wouldn't mind an appropriatly designed 'social extrovert' cache. ApK
  20. I usually monitor both 2 and 12, and call occationally. Radio is still a novelty for me.
  21. quote:Originally posted by Jamie Z:I figured out Circuit City's website and was able to learn that neither store near me carries the memory. Oh well. I guess I'm off to Tiger to order the memory. Again, thanks for the help! Jamie ...Or just wait six months and get a whole new system for the same price....
  22. quote:Originally posted by Crusso:2. and who can forget the ol "Bad guy with weapon rushes weaponless good guy who uses a piece of convenient pipe/tubing/construction material/whatever to run him through" cliche "...the oldest trick in the book, and I fell for it." This movie had some good moments and some cool effects, but geesh, they cut 40 minutes and they could still cut 40 more! Wake me when the heart-to-heart talks with your evil clone are over, Picard. sheesh. Story-wise, I think it's the weakest of the even-numbered films. And, yes, a very cool cache-mobile, but: 1. Since when are there cars in Star Trek? 2. At what point did the Federation decide it was OK to trash the ecosystems of alien worlds by wildly off-roading over the shrubbery? :-)
  23. quote:Originally posted by RossOlson:What about when you drive slower or faster. Wouldn't a tire become taller and skinnier the faster it spins? Could this change the accuracy of speedo at different speeds. I've wondered also about tire pressure. I suspect that difference by these things would be too slight for the average commuter with a Timex to measure accurately. ApK
  24. Previosu cars of mine have been so close to the GPS (within a needle's width or so) that it was insignificant. My new Outback is off from the GPS by 2.5 miles per hour, which according to my dealer is within the +/-4% they allow for. My odometer is also off by 2.5%, that is, one part in forty (odo says I've gone 41 miles when I really only went forty)...this bothers me more than the speedo because it means my mileage warrenty will end prematurely. BTW, I've check the speedo/odo to the best of my ability against the mile marker posts along side the Turnpike. The GPS and markers match exactly, the car is off as described. ApK
