Here's a passage quoted directly from the Starfleet Security Corps CQB Training Manual (which I just made up): "When engaged in a hand phaser fight, it is important to remember several points. Do not shoot at an adversary until you come COMPLETELY out from any cover you many have taken. Your uniform is a brightly colored target that will surely draw enemy fire, and will help insure that any microscopic life forms on the object you have hidden behind will not be damaged. Remember the Prime Directive! Although your phaser is an energy weapon whose output travels at the speed of light. It is still possible to duck out of the way of an approaching phaser blast. Remember to rely on this technique often! Finally, Your phaser can fire a continuous sustained beam that be easily aimed and directed at your target like a firehose. It is VITAL that you ONLY use this capability for such utility tasks as heating rocks and cutting through metal, NEVER in COMBAT. Use only short, imprecise pulses when your life is on the line." ApK
  2. quote:Originally posted by OlBluesguy:How come with all that high tech weaponry they miss so much? I love ST-TNG and have the whole series on DVD, but I must admit, I can only figure that sometime in the aftermath of the atomic wars, all knowledge of tactical small arms, and hand-to-hand combat was lost, and Starfleet had to train their security personnel by watching 1950's TV Westerns. 3. quote:Originally posted by Ramness570:Someone shot my cache! 4 times! Yikes. Shooting up in the air in a public area...some people are just too stupid. Same types that drop bricks off of highway overpasses for fun, no doubt. Anyway, I would have said something in the .38 caliber area, like a subsonic 9mm or lightly reloaded .38 Spl, but Roadster's picture shows that a .22LR could have done it, and that's more likely. I'll probably be down in the basement with an ammo can and a pellet gun before too long... ApK
  4. NB, I bet if all...or even most...smokers behaved like you, smoking would still be socially acceptable. After all, most folks don't care if people poison themselves, as long as they're not affected themselves. quote:I always give them dirty looks and sometimes they actually go pick it up and put it in the tray!!!! The dirty looks never work for me. Maybe I need to work out.
  5. quote:Originally posted by Natureboy1376:I regret that,I smoke and I refuse to smoke in Resteruants, in others cars unless they smoke, others houses even if they do smoke etc etc. On behalf of non-smoking drivers and resturaunt goers, I thanks you. A related complaint (and if you don't do this, Natureboy, then you may be the first 'Considerate Smoker' I've ever knowingly encountered.) is smokers, particularly in cars, who think "The World is My Ashtray" and throw their (usually still lit) butts on the ground. If you're not willing to dirty your own ashtray, maybe you should reconsider this smoking thing.... Littering aside, I once had to stop my car and get out and stamp out a fire caused by the oblivious idiot in the car in front of me who threw his butt into dry grass on the road side. I still haven't gotten my thank you from the State of Pennsylvania for saving it. But the littering is bad enough. I see way too may smokers litter the ground with their garbage even when there is an ashtray not 3 paces from them. One twit of a radio personality here in NJ recently did a bit on her show about how disgusting and inconsiderate littering was "...except for cigarette butts...I don't consider those littering...." Grr! ApK
  6. quote:Originally posted by sbrady88:I read through a lot of the older treads on rechargeable batteries but I didn't see a lot about rechargeable akaline batteries. Seems like most people use Nimh batteries. What is the story with rechargeable akalines? I tried them a few years ago. Found them to be next to worthless. ApK
  7. quote:Originally posted by LoneHowler:I agree with you about wanting to smash any fingers that dared put a sticker on my SUV without permission, but bumper stickers are easy enough to remove just take the vehicle to a high pressure car wash and you can blast any unwanted stickers into oblivion More to see, More to do Yes, and bruises heal quickly, so what's wrong with slapping her around a bit. And he can always earn more money, so why not just take some of his. Witness the fall of civiliation. ApK
  8. quote:Originally posted by SpongeRob:It's not a matter of comparason. It's a matter of expectations not being met. You expect to buy a car with 4 wheels. When you find out they don't hold air past 500 miles you tend to be a tad dissapointed. I'm quite happy with MetroGuide USA on our eMAp and GPS V, and I'm pretty demanding, too. The newer version has been more accurate--resturants and exits .25 miles off have been few and far between, and it has somewhat better sized regions than the previous version, but still not as useful as Magellen Mapsend, where you can create as many variable rectangular areas as you need. I do wish there was a way to do better searches, but if I have to choose, I'd choose that they fill my memory card with cartographic data rather than text indecies. And be sure to check your tire pressure every time you fill up! ApK
  9. quote:Even Garmin admits this: From the GPSMAP 76 page "This unit features a built-in quad helix antenna for superior reception..." I wouldn't call it 'admitting' so much as 'wanting to sell the more expensive units.' From what I've learned here, all else being equal, QH is apparently better than patch, and I'd certainly want the better antenna but one can implement a great patch design and a lousey QH design, so don't decide just on that. Kekenj and I use an eMap (patch) and an GPS V (QH) side by side when we cache and we're very happy with both, but have never noticed an advantage in getting a lock or reported accuracy with the V under any conditions. Quite the opposite sometimes, but I suspect that has to do more with other factors. (I'm taller, so my eMap is closer to the satellites. ) ApK
  10. quote:Originally posted by brad.32:My complaint was about satellite imagery. I see the distinction. Seriously, though, judging from those pages you linked, not the textbooks, which I don't have, I don't think they are trying to say that imaging is distinct from photography because of the recording medium (the comment about not using film notwithstanding) but rather because the image data is produced by scanning with sensors, not simply by optically focusing incoming light. But, as I said, I have a more importan complaint: Why do resturants seat non-smoking customers DIRECTLY ADJEACENT to the smoking section and call it non-smoking? I don't ask for non-smoking because _I_ don't want to smoke, I can not smoke anywhere. I ask for it because I don't want to smell OTHER people's smoke while I eat! Geesh! Space the sections farther apart or invest in a fan! ApK
  11. quote:Originally posted by brad.32:Fine, develop the media, then look at the negative, it's still on the media. In photography the image is recorded on the media/film. A CCD is just a sensor. I complain about the Humpty-Dumptian view of language. "'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone,' it means just what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less.' " Anyway, I figured this must have been argued before (since so many artsy types are excusionary elitests, and so many techie types are sticklers for precision and accuracy, digital photography would presumably be a petrie dish for elistist-sticklerism), so I tried to search, but I can't find any web sites where people even suggest your point of view. How did you come by your opinion? Why do you feel the art of photography would resist the inclusion of new technology? ApK

  14. quote:Originally posted by brad.32:There is no image formed on a CCD array. One can't look at the CCD and see anything. You can look at exposed film and see an image? Pretty good eyes. Me, I can't see anything until the chemical changes latent on the film are developed by a chemical process that creates an image, just like I can't see the pattern of electrical changes on the chip until they're rendered into a visible image by an electrical/digital process. Don't make me start another off topic language thread...I've got a keyboard and I'm not afraid to use it. ApK

  16. quote:Originally posted by brad.32:Photography refers to images directly recorded on film. Says who? Photography comes from "light writing," it was it was started on sheets of metal and glass, not film, and a photo-sensitive chip is as valid a light-writing medium as any other. ApK

I think Journalism is about 1 generation away from being relegated to the Theater Arts department of colleges. It's sad. And I know that 'misstatements' are not even always the journalist's fault...I've seen articles come out of editors hands distinctly different then when they went in. ApK
  19. I just read the story...nice pictures! ...ummm....you didn't write it, did you? Allow me a few moments of gratuitous journalist-bashing: "...the satellite network that lets devices figure out exactly where they are by bouncing beams off the satellites..." There must be hundreds of correct ways to describe how GPS works and "devices bouncing beams off satellites" isn't any of them. "...left a sealed tin of Valentine's Day chocolates. Food is normally a no-no in caches, but..." No buts. No food. Especially not in a news story that will presumably introduce people to the game for the first time. Way to set an example of obeying the rules, Wayne.... "...because it was found that giving civilians precise GPS coordinates would have minimal impact on national security..." No, the military just found better ways to deny use of the system to our enemies...military OR civilian. Ok I'm done now...thanks for the outlet! Brynne If you suspect the GPS will spend more time in the car then on the trail, consider a Garmin eMap. Excellent mapping display and pretty inexpensive where you can find them. Works great for geocaching (it's what I use) as long as you don't expect it to spend much time being dropped in rivers, etc. ApK

With some notable exceptions of blatent stupidity, like Washington, DC, you can transport your legally owned guns almost anywhere in the country, including NJ. All that matters is that they're transported correctly (in NJ, that means unloaded and inaccessible prefereable locked in the trunk) and that they're legal where you end up. ApK
