  1. Actually, this is not anarchy. Anarchy means "no rulers" not "no rules." I am not sure there is any recognized political system with no rules. Most mature people recognize that most rules, under most circumstances, work to their advantage most of the time.

Ooh..a rare chance to go off topic....From Webster's:

    Main Entry: an·ar·chy

    Pronunciation: 'a-n&r-kE, -"när-

    Function: noun

Etymology: Medieval Latin anarchia, from Greek, from anarchos having no ruler, from an- + archos ruler -- more at ARCH-

    Date: 1539

1 a : absence of government b : a state of lawlessness or political disorder due to the absence of governmental authority c : a utopian society of individuals who enjoy complete freedom without government

2 a : absence or denial of any authority or established order b : absence of order : DISORDER <not manicured plots but a wild anarchy of nature -- Israel Shenker>

So as a political system, it means no rulers, but as a behavioral model, it can mean no rules at all. Of course, the statements that brought it up here don't seem be those of either sort of anarchist, but more closely resemble statements that might be made by an inconsiderate agitator.

I'm an Information Systems Technician, but I'm considering cross-rating into Crypto, just so when people ask me what I do, I can say "Sorry, that's classified."

My dad was in the Navy in WWII, I think HIS dad was in the Navy in WWI, and I actually wanted to join the Air Force, but they wanted to make me a sheet metal worker...go figure.

  3. Perosnally, I think using ammo boxes for cache containers is a nice example of beating swords into plowshares, and just one more little peace dividend from our defense tax dollars.

Plus, I get the boxes for free when I order them full of ammo. ;)

  4. [RANT] I saw one cache log where a guy had taken a keychain and left

a quarter from his home state.

I was curious, so I looked at other logs by the same person...

sure enough, a few keychains and pens and such taken in exchange

    for state quarters.

I mean, you could call an ordinary one a "Hard to find 1992 quarter",

but it's still only worth 25 cents! [/RANT]

Keychains and pens are often given away for free, state quarters sometimes sell for $2.50 in stores. One man's meat....

Try to leave the zero-sum sensibility at home and enjoy the hunt.

  5. Why do people insist on calling these "50 cal" ammo cans? They aren't it clearly says on the side "5.56 mm" which is about .223 cal.  Most of these cans either had 5.56 mm or 7.62 mm and never had .50 cal!  You would hardly get enough in one of these small cans to make it worthwhile... bbbbbrrrbb and you'd be out of ammo!!!

    Sigh... never mind.  :(

They have been remarked and reused to distribute 9mm and 5.56 ammo, but the .50 caliber cans were made to hold belt-fed .50 BMG

    50calmg.gif

Similarly, the .30 caliber boxes really are for belt-fed 7.62 machine gun ammo.

  6. However, I think if the container is clearly marked, it would be easier to suggest to the EOD incident commander to undertake a less invasive means of identifying the contents of the container, such as remote opening or portable x-ray.

Otherwise, the object would probably be detonated in place.

    Ah. Got it. Thanks!

It's good to know you can employ a range of options.

  7. I think you all mised something here, a gun inside a pack doesn't just "go off". Unless:

Auto is carried cocked-and-locked, with the saftey off

    Revolver is carried cocked

Two very stupid ways to carry a gun.

Even with your quoted cases, the trigger would have to be exposed or the gun would have to be defective.

I assumed it was a rifle, carried loaded and slung, hence my 'idiot' comment above.

Any other set of circumstances that would result in an accidental discharge while climbing a fence strike me as being so improbable that I could not believe it, or so mind-numbingly stupid that I can't beleieve the person would still be alive.

  8. a "family license" and I have hear that it is an individual license. Which is it?

"individual" is in contrast to "other entity," like a business or a club, which used to be allowed to get a GMRS license.

Now the license is only issued to an individual, and that individual is allowed to let his family operate his station.

  9. this public safety geocacher is going to be looking for the "This is an Official Game Piece" text on the well designed GEOCACHING.COM label.  If I don't see it, I'm keeping my guys back and kicking the call up the food chain.

Otherwise, you guys might be e-mailing my wife and kids and telling them what a great, but paranoid, guy I was.

I don't understand...if you DO see the sticker, you WON'T keep your guys back and use the same protocols? So any terroist reading this board now knows how to take out your team?

I agree with everyone who has repeatedly said the best practice is to hide your cache well enough not be found accidently. I don't care what the container is, Claymore casing or lunchbag, once it's called in, I know you guys have to take it seriously, and I don't see why a "this is not a bomb" sticker would make much of a difference to you after that point.

Another problem: what if the cache owner that you're profiling changes your clue? It would kind of tick me off if after all of the figuring the clue was different than when you used it.

Ditto. I enjoyed being able to solve this sample, but if I was going into the field with no easy way to to try to solve again without a trip back to a web terminal, I'd want to be sure the solution was unambiguosly correct.

Or The way I see it, the less said about it the better. Frankly, unless I am doing something wrong, it really isnt their business to ask me where I was or where I am going.

So cops should have to read you mind and know your intentions beforehand?

They mainly get called AFTER a crime has been commited...I think it's a good thing if they are being alert and concerned enough to check out suspicious activity BEFORE any crime is committed. (Isn't that what everyone is complaining LEOs should have done pre-9/11?) If they harrass you, are abusive, or otherwise break the law, call a lawyer and sue. Otherwise, why not cooperate? If you had told them you were geocaching, perhaps if someone reports the cache as a possible bomb, they might remember you and be able to save the cache and some taxpayer money.

That's a tad unfair....the message says "it doesn't matter what order the letters are in," implying the "only thing that matters" refers to importance in the order of letters. I didn't get any sense that they implyed you could change, add or remove letters, did you?

That 'other' Garmin beanbag mount, the Portable Mount, works great with the GPS V for us, too. That's what keknj uses in her car.

The new RAM equivelent bean bag mount looks like it would be as good or better, and has the bonus of being able to move the other hardware between other RAM bases.

I use a RAM suction cup mount for my eMap, and have liked it fine, but recently I tried to remove it and some of the rubber stayed on the windhield, ruining the suction cup.

The manufacture has offered to replace it for me under warranty, so that's cool, butI might try the beanbag mount as well.

I recall there being a thread or two a few months back...can't recall if it was genuine or just troll bait...complaining that the hider of a cache should have specified all the terrain hazards en route...like holes in the ground, thorns, etc.
