  1. If a child was abandoned it would not be a requirement for the parent to be located and agree to it's adoption - an agency would over see it and all of the childs life would be kept. No one would say -"delete this child and start over with a new one" It would be nice to keep the experience in tact just as it has always been - right there with the cache and everything that happened since it started. Let the idea of the cache live on and just pick up the now caring owner! It is a easy switch and could be very easy on all who take part in it. The name is the same, the location, the experiences, it just keeps doing what it always did!
  2. I have the same problem with IE 8 - not sure how to change the compatible mode or will that work on IE 8 - needs the details
  3. I have kept caches going before cause I liked the cache and the logs that go with them. To me It is more about the cache than the owner. It was a great idea and owner is not as important as the originial idea someone wants to keep alive. Those logs might be great and reveals the history of what has happened. I would prefer an option where the reviewer could be the one to allow the adoption rather than only the CO. After it is clear the cache is abandoned, Let the Reviewer give the cache and all the logs to who ever wants it. Starting it all over seems to lose alot of history and it is really about the cache, its life, and what has happened since it started that we can all share and enjoy. The history can even show who all has owned it.
  4. I suggest you use Delorme TOPO mapping software - I have the eastern half of the US on my computer which produces printabe maps to take with you. You can then set the co-ords in the software to be the same as your GPS and print the grid right on the maps. This way you can find your self on the map by looking at the co-ord on the GPS and matching up. A cheap laminating machine will keep your map dry for about a 1.00 a page. It is a lot of fun. Beware the software has a learning curve but by far well worth the effort - many features available to draw on the maps. This software is loaded with features. Go Get it!
  5. GC9F26 GCE75F GCG92Q Same spot - many different containers - started out with plastic - now ammo!
  6. You might want to give this one up - the container is likely to get damaged since clear containers are not usually strong like an ammo box. You can't control what extreme effort will be used by a careless cacher. Ice is a tuff thing to deal with and not a welcome obsticle. Freezing water will most likely damage anything in time! cachers are supposed to replace as found and that is also difficult in this case. You might consider a seasonal cache and only make it available in the non freezing times. Not so many cachers in the winter months anyway. Good luck with it!
  7. I believe for sure it was used to transport the brains of Big Foot for DNS testing. Result TBA!
  8. Welcome to the east coast! Check out the caches I hid, and if not adopted you will have an adventure to remember. Got to hike a little, maybe alot on one of them. Enjoy WV/VA. Read descriptions and the logs - be careful out there!
  9. Don't assume that there are no kid stuff in any cache unless it has a theme to it - books or fishing etc. I see kid stuff in most caches unless they are really way out there to far for a kid to enjoy! Even thos can because folks take trade item in hopes someone they know will want it! Like their kids.
  10. I would log a find and email the owner - I am sure it was easy to open at one time - if that doesn't work - I would log a needs maintence on it and leave a log saying what the problem is. Most times that is all ya got to do!
  11. Before I had a electronic compass in my GPS I used a real Compass to start me in the right direction while standing still. It was fun. In case you want to know - when standing still after a GOTO the GPS arrow could be pointing anywhere on the GPS compass page - use a real compass to find North and rotate the compass page of GPS until the N agrees with the real compass. The GPS arrow is now correct. Kinda fun to do. Give it a try! Works anytime you are standing still!
  12. It is best not to drag folks into this game - I have been wrong about how much other like this game. Sometimes they are just being nice! I prefer to tell folks about it and then let them come to me if interested. That way I am not pushing and they are excited about the new game. You can't just take anyone and expect total "whoopeeee I love it " to happen. You don't have to leave a class room to get the idea across. A second outdoor session can follow with a reduced really interested number of folks. 3 to 1 is a good maximum class. In this game it would be difficult to hold the entire classes attention when outdoors. I would set up a Non-published cache for an unconvinced learner.
  13. It takes so long to find one I want to do - because of all the meaningless caches out there - you bet I print the cache page and store them up and grab them when I want to go! I do take them with me - sometimes I even load the GPS ahead of time. Don't do it everytime but it is there if I need it. If the police happen to ask me what I am doing I have something to show, but that has never happened either. I also helps me see if I have the co-ords in there correctly - and yes that has been a problem b4! Good info in the descriptions sometimes that helps the ecperience along and is useful. I refer to them again when I log them if I find a bunch of them. YES I do it!
  14. I have contacted owner many times if I found a concern about the cache and wanted to voice it in an email rather than the logs. Puzzle caches - it has been a thing to straight out something confusing and not chase a wild goose. Never had anyone mind and always gotten a response! Pretty Cool way to have feed back.
  15. Not a chance - I use Deorme Maps to see where the cache is or use the map on the cache page to see if I want to find it at all. If it is urban or close to the parking spot I just forget it all together! I would be as far away from muggles as I can get!
  16. I have several hiking sticks and all are quite useful. Simple bamboo stick with wrist strap Nice carved one purchased from a woodcrafter store. Commerial ones that twist to adjust length. Ski poles. I use them more for hiking than geo-caching when doing ruff terrain. Great for Balance. When bushwacking I prefer to have GPS in hand rather than a walking stick. The clamp type of adjustment for length is better than the twist cause it doesn't get stuck! When I take them I really enjoy the increase in balance -especial when getting over logs and downed trees. I find a short stick to wave in front of me if spider webs are a problem. I look totally rediculas while doing that!
  17. I am finding more Geo-Caches that are not Maintained or abandoned - somebody is dropping out! I think the numbers move around alot!
  18. You have made enough finds to know what kind of a cache gets good logs on it. Do something you are proud of. The simple cache has already been done. Make your cache interesting in someway even if already thought of somewhere else. Make the place fun to go to, and let the finder want to come back again. Hide the cache where someone someone will have to look around to find it. Nice if the cache has several ways to get to it. Make it muggle free completely so the finder can enjoy the HUNT! Nice dry container that anyone can work the lid properly. Have an interesting description page. Put in great trade items and encourage other to do the same. Promote CITO! Suggest alternate fun on the outing! Point out interesting other stuff. Spend time on the Co-ords, approach from several directions and on multiple days if possible. Good Luck! Have a ball!
  19. Yes they cheat! I believe LPC's are cheating - the lamp post are 100 feet apart and the GPS is accurate to 25 feet at Wally World. Wonder which one it would be. The cache itself is a spoiler! What about a guard rail - there are some many ends to choose from! With an Urban cache the muggles cheat you out of a hunt by being exactly where they are supposed to be and they don't even know they are part of the game. Couldn't sign the log cause I forgot my Pen! The Prize is the experience and cheater cheats themselves out of it, thinking they are having fun.
  20. Take me somewhere interesting that I have never been too. That is what it is all about. Can't wait to see why you brought me here. I love new trails, cliffs,Rock Formation, Lakes, streams, Veiws, Hikes, boating. Anything of REAL INTEREST. The appeal is dwindle-ing with meaningless caches, guardrail, quik grabs,LPC, road side strings, Most micros and a ton of time weeding them OUT. I like to find a container with trade items and a cache with a story and a place I would love to come back to with my friends. I have used caching to get to know an area. Lots of fun has been had coming and going to the caches. I love the exercise and a clever hide. I truely love a beautiful place. I still am impressed with the GPS and what it can do! I still amazes me - hope it always will.
  21. If I see DNF finds on my caches I go out and see if it is there. If it is, I post a note that it is. Most people who log a DNF will say how hard they looked and if they suspect a missing cache. A DNF accompanyed by a low find count speaks for itself. I never post a NM unless I have attempted to contact the CO several times. If no response, my attempt to contact the CO goes in the log as well. I once had a needs maintence put on my cache because of a long gap in finds. There was no problem with the cache and was in place. I contacted him and he reconsidered and I deleted his logs. He also felt the cache was abandon because I had not logged on in a while. Hello, it is Winter! We got thru it - but that was a pain. He improperly voted hisself cache police.
  22. Just word of caution about multitools. Once you get one - you need to Practice with it. Many pocket knives of any type do not lock. If so, you need to learn how to use it and make sure it doesn't fold up and cut you badly. Also learn the difference between the hazards of a sharp knife vs a dull one. Sharp is by far better, but needs to be respected to the Max. If you buy an expensive knife do not allow anyone else to use it. They will do something awful to it. I have hiked many a trail and don't remember using my knife at all. It is always there if I need it but it just doesn't come up!
  23. After a few FTF I realized I want to enjoy my time out so I no longer worry to much about the FTF. GeoCaching is not the only thing I have chickened out on and later wished I had gone. I need to be more motivated to go, cause once you are out there, it is usually a good thing! In general I do alot more than GeoCache once I am up and running. I like to explore any place I go to, if there is something of interest. New places are new fun! Take me, Take me, Take me!
  24. I was new to caching in AZ and I thought this looked "too much like a dangerous snake" to be real. I nearly went and picked it up but sanity prevailed. I showed this picture to some locals and told the story and they said I should never leave the house again until I was ready to go back to New York Twice on a 60 degree day I have found a copperhead that was so still it seemed not to be alive. I even tapped to with a stick to see if it was and it still was totally motionless. I had to really disturb it badly and then it struck the stick 3 times faster than I could see it happen. It is something to remember - my gut not my mind said you got to really be sure about this one. Never trust a reptile. Cool temperatures slow them down alot but they are ready willing and able to take charge. Take care of yourself - it is YOUR job - so do it well.
  25. So Groundspeak can simply say noone owns an abandon cache and it is up for grabs. Point is - it is a good cache and after replacement , people keep finding it and enjoying it. That is what it is all about - not so much a hole in the rules shuts a good caches down when someone else simply wants to replace the container and let the cache continue. If folks are enjoying their finds - the cache is serving its purpose even if the CO is not doing his part right! Maybe what I am feeling here is that the cache itself is more important than the quality of the CO's participation. The cache is still on the radar and the fun continues and the replacer has done a good thing for now. I certainly agree if the cache is causing major problems that are drawing complaints in the logs and disturbing the quality of the hunt -then shut her down. If the logs show business as usually and everyone is having a ball,it is a great contribution.. I would also still like to see that this cache has been there since 2001 and here are the logs and stories and what has happened at this cache location since then. Pretty neat it is all together and on the radar!
