  1. Slowing down - mostly due to other interest taking over - have always used it as a back burner -spur of the monent activity - but now it takes quite a while to find a cache I want to pursue due to all the Lame ones! It use to take me 5 minutes and now it might take a hour! Still love it and still want to go! Take me somewhere interesting! I have a better camera now!
  2. New Rules: No one can place a cache with .1 miles from any road If the cache is smaller than a shoe box take home with you! Anyone caught trading down loses their GPS or Cell phone! All caches require at 15 minutes of effort to find! If it Leaks destory the cache! All caches must be able to survive a bear attack! Anyone unable to refit the top correctly is out of the game! All Caches Pages must state a Valid reason for the location! Only 15% of the cache can be visible after covered. Bushwacking is required for all caches -at least .1 miles. Noone is allowed to holler "I found it" All trade items have to be agreed upon by 10 other cachers! And blaw Blaw Blaw!
  3. Take a look at the GPSMAP 78 - it has it all covered and it floats - you can load good maps or not - has a hd sensor and an easy to read screen in bright sunlight - it is rugged and cost under S200.00. You don't need electronic compass or a barometer neither is impressive for any price. This GPS will track where you go and can download to map - which is tons of fun and very interesting to do! The marine features are a ball while on Vacation near oceans or large lakes - check the tides, find bouys, see how many knots you are doing. Get one and get in the woods.
  4. Calling a CO that hides a lame cache, A punk is hilarious - seems like he wants a real hunt - as it was in the beginning should it always be! Location location location! I'm with Clint - take me somewhere and Make My Day!
  5. This is all news to me - why in the world would someone make an AA format battery that would destory the device - sounds like it would be easy to make the mistake and put one in there assuming the voltage would be the same or compatible. Is there any warning on the battery -what device are they intended for!
  6. Yes! by all means use the rubber snake - it is also fun to just put it near the cache so it is found while searching. Don't forget the fake spiders as well! Little dinosaurs peeking out of rocks are fun as well! Just don't hide the cache where you have to put your hands in a deep hole to get it! Real snakes and spiders love those places as well. Make sure you do this with a remote cache so the fake articles don't draw attention to muggles.
  7. I am into interesting caches/places - that involves a hike of a mile or more or at least involve some exercise to an interesting place. Need a view, a cave a waterfall, a bike ride, - something with features about it. Take me somewhere. I don't care for Roadside, Series, Mini-s, Guardrail, Lamppost, neighborhood, residential, or business caches. Earthcaches and historical are great a well. The hide should be at least as difficult so a blind person couldn't find - should take 15 to 20 minutes to find it and maybe some thought behind it. Love to trade and want something in there. Caches with good trade item are really fun! Location LOcation location! I do a few puzzle caches and enjoyed them - but I have to be in the mood and still want to go somewhere interesting! My participation has really dropped off due to lack of good caches and other outdoor interest taking up my time!
  8. I had a log once that explained the finder forgot to mark the car and depended on the family dog to take him back! What a great companion!
  9. I think it is a bad idea due to the fact that it looks like it is ok to dig a hole. The drainage problem is going to make it a nasty cache to retrieve and we got enough of that! Trying to find loop holes in the rules is probably not best and will do more harm than good. Put all your great energy into finding a great place to take someone and let them get the rewards for being outdoors. Take your time and don't be offended if your ideas are challenged! You are on the right track - love the fact that a good hide is important to you!
  10. Seriously you need to post a no Peeing zone around the fence - that can really be bad news causing the inability to walk at all. Of coarse the logs would be great, no matter who goes or what they do to deal with it! Someone is bound to throw a jacket over it an stratle the fence. Earn that smiley! A big part of geocaching is reading great logs! I can't wait!
  11. Last night I saw upon the stair A little man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today Gee! I wish he'd go away!
  12. Heres the Deal! One person sets up an account and very simply shares the password with the other person and the non account person watches the account to be informed. You could even go so far as to Create an email address that both of you share and check on, in the event that someone emails you directly from your profile, you both have access to it. Needless to say you must also share attitudes and agree on almost everything! This makes the maintenance easier whoever is available can fix the cache as needed. If you do it together you must have complete trust and agreement of everything. It really isn't hard to do! I have been doing this since 2002 with my brother and it really is a matter of convenience! It is nice to know someone has your back!
  13. I just had the fallen tree problem with both legs of the same cache within 2 months of each other. Need a better plan - I can say noone has mowed over one of mine yet - they usually find a steal.
  14. Some of the best logs are the ones where folks forgot to mark their car and the return is quite interesting. On one of my caches the family dog got them back to the car no problem! Good job Fido!
  15. The First thing you are doing right is taking an interest in being a great hider! For me I like a cache that requires some looking around to find and then say well that was clever! Find a spot that YOU like and write the reasons and keep them. ALso read the logs of caches that have good compliments and see why they liked it. Find a place that other people are going to and love it. Ask people that are not Geocachers where they go and what they have seen. People often go to beautiful places just because they really are beautiful. They don't have to be beautiful but at least very interesting in some way! Thank you so much for taking an interest in getting better at this game. Best not to hide one until you are really happy with your choice. Once you hide one - the game is ON and alot of folks will be having fun or bored to death! It is not a race - it is a piece of life! Good luck to YOU!
  16. In addition to the above said I send an email to the CO in hopes of a response. I will replace the whole thing if neccessary to keep a good cache going if it has good logs and it seems like everyone is enjoying the cache alot. I like to see the crowd having fun and keep it going. Sometimes the CO is out of the game and will eventually return. Other just disappear for unknown reasons. I still feel there should an option to adopt an abandoned cache if the reveiwer agrees it is the best for all. I am one that would like to preserve the history and logs of the original cache. Why is it so important to care how many have taken it over and cared about it. I good cache is a good cache! I love to read the comment of the finders for any given cache and enjoy their experiences!
  17. Thanks for posting so many beautiful pictures - makes me want to get in the car and go somewhere pretty. I didn't realize so many geocachers were also excellant with the camera - very impressive!
  18. Read you son this story - My radiator ran out of water and my engine over heated in the country where population is 2 people per square mile. I let the engine cool and added creek water. During this time (45 minutes) 3 People stopped and got out of their car to offer help, I was able to get 3 miles out of the creek water and stopped in front of a house to ask for more water. I didn't make it to the door when 2 folks came out to help. I got 4 miles the next time and stopped in a church parking lot and 6 people came to help and all offered to take me anywhere - got more water and finally got to a filling station with a phone and a parking area. While calling a friend for help 4 more people came to me offering help. Sometimes we forget how many good people out number the bad - that was day to remember - no matter who you are you are going to need help and no matter who you are you can be the one to offer it - even if it puts you out. Tell your son to just be proud of what he does right!
  19. I would leave all items in the cache and place deck of cards with Hawaii hoola girls on it! If I can't find a desireble item I place one! Keep it fun for someone! The more I like the location the better I trade, the better I comment, and better I remember that day of being off the couch!
  20. In addition to all the good advice - keep a sharp eye out for tall grass and avoid it if possible - ticks hang out on tall grass and hitch-hike as something passes by. Lime decease can also be mis-diagnosed cause the ticks carry parasites on them that do not respond to lime treament. A friend of ours spent almost 2 years of horrible pain for the parasites until finally properly diagnosed. Take those things seriously and remember geo-caching is susposed to be a truely fun experience - so think first - cache second!
  21. Do not archive it just because it is old - that is bragging rights and something to be proud of, especially if the logs are good and folks are having fun! Add some good stuff to the cache and take an hour and read your logs again. Put something in the cache to say how old it is! Put an old man figurine in there and a tag that says been sittin here since Clinton changed the signal!
  22. I fell in love with the game in 2002 when I found the hunt took me to some really neat places and that is what I still love. Accept now you have to weed thru all the junk caches to find a great trip to a cache with junk in it. Please feel free to make an art out of finding interesting things to put in the caches - they don't have to cost much - yard sales are full of cheap useable stuff someone no longer wants. It is fun to put good stuff in there and it adds alot to the game. Keep it in your mind and the prizes will come. When you are 67 you will pride yourself on what you can still do (so will the women) - if you get out there and do it and never think of not doing it! Camp hike paddle ride walk and tell all the jokes you know! It ain't OVER till its OVER! If ya come to a fork in the road - TAKE IT! DO THAT! when ya can friends and let them that don't want too, have fond memories of not doin it!
  23. It is a hunting game and spoiler pics that show the hiding place hurt the game. So I usally ask the cacher to delete it themselves and nicely explain why - they are usually new to the game. I have great containers with lots of good stuff in it and that is what they are showing off. Sometimes the background shows the hiding place. So by asking them to delete it, helps them understand the rules better and all of them agreed to do so. There are only been a few of them since 2002. I also believe it is a good Idea to walk away from the hiding spot before perusing the cache just in case a muggle appears! Never holler 'I found it' Love the posted pics - many are very interesting - some are really well done and come with great comment - I read every log and very disapponted if there is no story! My caching are given great thought before placing and I will take you somewhere really neat!
  24. if you don't find a pen in the cache and didn't bring one - go ahead and log online and just say so - if cheaters want to log online without finding the cache noone really cares about them - the numbers are not nearly as important as the fun you have playing the game so - if you have a story to tell just assume everyone wants to hear it - but tell the story don't blab!
  25. Part of not getting muggled is placing the cache in a spot not normally traveled and teaching cachers to not yell - I FOUND IT! Having a great container makes the game truely cool and something to remember, I do tend to hide the cache to keep the hunt, a hunt! I have seen caches in plain sight but no effort was made at all to use any kind of camo and they often don't last. Caches should be protected from muggles while searching, perusing, or replacing the cache - it really hurts the game to have the muggles take the cache and they will.
