  1. 1. Learning to use the GPS for other hiking activities! 2. taking me to places I would not have otherwise ever known about! 3. Exercise - the hiking kind 4. taking some neat Pictures 5. love to read the logs!
  2. One of the best ways to help deal with muggles is not telling them that the cache is there! DO NOT EVER yell out "I found it" say something else - put in the instructions on you cache page. "Hey! I found a neat bug" "I think I lost my contact" is a much better way to announce it! Hide the cache where there are no Muggles! GO remote! Go out of sight. Be quiet, stealthy, and do not draw attention to your self! Seekers can do a lot better to help out with the problem!
  3. My 2 Cents worth - we are a group of people who care about the others that play this game and out of respect for them we really don't want anyone to have a negative experience. A lot of things about this game involve risk and judgement, there ARE no garantees. I do not want anyone to turn away from one of my caches because of my neglecting the cache, so if anyone complains of PI - I will remove it completely from the site ASAP. I want folks to come - enjoy themselves and that is important to me. For the same reason I would never use a peanut container for a cache - I would never find PI acceptable just because 'You have been warned". PI can be really stuff for some of us and wanting to find a cache with great location and great logs is a wonderful thing! I feel PI at cache is a show stopper and a trip for nothing. I don't feel it is the same as rattlesnakes and spiders!
  4. Just to add my 2 cents worth - I do NOT think you should log a smiley - log a note and let everyone know you found it by accident while not intending too! It is a funny and interesting log and adds to the log notes and verifies it is still there. Playing the game says you got the co-ords placed in GPS and searched for IT. To log a find you should be playing the game for THAT cache - anything else is a technicallity! I believe in the intent of the game and it does intend that you were LOOKING for it and as a result found what you were LOOKING for! IF it was one of my caches, I would truely not care what you did one way or the other and would take no action. If you are out there having a ball - I am happy for you!
  5. If one person really enjoys your cache - then others will follow and have wonderful but different things to say! I love to hear how it goes on my caches and take great pride in them. The logs are great to read and give you sense of experience along with the finder! Nice part of the game. If it is a great cache give it a great log - it is important to do that!
  6. No! good deed goes unpunished - some people remind you of this and alot would have appreceiated your efforts to help, sorry you lost your gear! As too what should you have done - you were out witnessed so the cops would not be an option. Get the licence plate and let them know you have it. Make a plan and do what ever you think is deserving!
  7. I would not refer to a wasp as a dangerous animal cause it is NOT! Some folks are highly allergic and need to take special precautions. I would say wasp warning should happen when a cache is safely placed without them and they moved in on you later. IF dangerous animals are likely they should be named and explained or move the cache to a safer location. Dangerous animals in general that can be anywhere should not be mentioned unless the likelyhood of encounter is predictable. Just because you are in the woods! - well that is a given. Example - Mean dogs are predictible! No! Wasp are not dangerous - unless you have a really high unual horrible enounter which is rare! Your allergies don't make the animal dangerous - you are a danger to yourself and hopefully aware of it and prepared! I avoid a peanut container but don't Label a peanut a problem.
  8. Add it to your collection of mushroom type pictures - I would remove it from the cache after taking the picture! Mushrooms pop up pretty quickly!
  9. I only do caches that require a hike of some kind to an interesting place! I almost always take a camera so I do hang around and enjoy the area - especially if there is a system of trails and features association with the location. I take lots of pictures and love to hike and enjoy new places. It is seldom about the cache for me - more about the place I am brought too! I quite often come back to enjoy a place more if time doesn't present itself while caching. I want to see it all!
  10. You are right! it is your choice - you could play basketball with tennis rachet if you are at home, do what you want - but here you joined a public game agreeing to play by the rules. If you don't want to bother signing the logs or care about the numbers that is fine and dandy, no real problem. Just understand the game and realize your log is feedback to the one who placed it and knowing its is there or not is a great and wonderful thing. Sharing your experience in text is interesting to everyone and we would love to hear how it goes with you - especially if you have something neat or important to share. I love reading the logs of those who had a great time and got off the couch to spend time on a hunt! Yahoo! take pride in participation and trade with Jest! Thats just my 2 cents!
  11. Caches can be taken by muggles just because someone hollers out "I found it" the whole world will come to see about it! Muggles just see something left behind and don't appreciate the game - hide it better and demand stealth and quietness! see if that helps! Good Luck!
  12. Try to find anything interesting - I found a small info booklet on tree leaves and still have it. Playing cards of interest, puzzles and games! I left a garden hose repair part several times and it goes fast! frig magnets that look like push pins were great. Pocket knifes are not allowed but men like them and women remove them! Very cheap very useful! Knife sharperers! Magic tricks for the kids and toys! Compass of course! Just keep stuff in mind and you will run across good stuff at yard sales really cheap! We need more ammo cans to get good size stuff in there -avoid small containers - gives us some room to trade t-shirts and kitchen towels and crazy socks! Glad you are interested in great trade items. Write down the ones you like to find as well! Good luck and don't hide anything until you are excited about how great your hide is - one great one out does 100 lame ones!
  13. A great log tells what they liked about their experience and the things that went on while being out there. It is interesting to hear what they did and how it went! In one log the family dog had to find the car cause they didn't mark it! That was precious! I want to know they had a great time - cause that is what it is all about!
  14. Q. How do I get to ... A. Turn Left a mile before where the old fire station used to be! Q. How do I get to ... A. Get off at the last Huntington exit! Q. How do I get to ... A. Well! which way did you come! Q. How do I get to ... A. You can't get there from here!
  15. It does let you know something is a miss and the alert should be appreciated - I would just email the CO with nice words of attention. In the case of PI I would leave the area at first leaf!
  16. I have a cache that is 7 miles round trip and people that do it consider it a ball and are proud of their bragging rights.!
  17. So sorry to hear this kind of news - are there any details as to what happened - perhaps others can learn to avoid a bad situation in some way. RIP D3vil!
  18. I do two things - 1. I am very careful about muggles and avoid letting them know what I am doing - looking for bugs is my best answer! I assume if muggles find the cache that it will be home with them in record time especially the lame manner in which alot of them are placed! 2. if I can see muggles are going to be a problem I deem the cache location to be a nuiance and avoid it all together. I believe caches should not be hidden where you have to worry about muggles. Put it somewhere else so finders need not bother with the problem. Never Ever Ever holler out "I found it" - Use a signal for that! Put your hat on backward - hands on your hips or head - stand on one foot - but dont yell it out! Muggles from far away will watch you very closely if they know you found something great or you wouldn't be hollering to the whole world that you found it! The CO hides it for all to find except muggles!
  19. One simple way is to upload the photos to your own cache page, and paste each photo's URL into the "Insert Image" icon in your forum reply. To avoid confusing cachers, I upload the occasional odd photo to one of my archived caches. But if you upload in the Photos section as an attachment, you can then Insert Image much the same way. Upload a photo, right-click its thumbnail image, and you will see a URL. If, for example, the thumbnail's URL is: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/uploads/monthly_01_2015/post-7976698-079894000%201422727200_thumb.jpg ... remove the only the "_thumb" portion, so it's like this: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/uploads/monthly_01_2015/post-7976698-079894000%201422727200.jpg Use that URL in the Insert Image form, and the thumbnail remains, but viewers don't have to click the thumbnail. This technique has the advantage of having the photo's file in the same place as the forum itself, so it's more likely to be viewable, than if you uploaded it to another site. Thanks for asking! I once tried to display a thumbnail, and gave up. You gave me the chance to go figure it out. Thanks so much for the post I will give that a try - nice explaination and very helpful!
  20. Always remember that you look like you are up to something because you ARE! It is hard to hide! After you become suspected you are probably going to ruin the cache by having muggles investigate this guy who is up to something. They never mind their own business! Find the cache by pretending to take pictures and carry a bug guide with you. Once you find it, return and retrieve later when noone interested in you is looking! If a real bug hunter questions you in detail - tell him to - Bug Off! HA HA! Good Luck and my best advice is just stay away from muggles and get back in the woods! It is wonderful out there!
  21. Trying to learn how to correctly post a picture to the Photography forum. When I attached the JPG a thumnail icon appears and must be clicked on to see the picture. Other folks seem to have the picture showing without the icon. What am I doing wrong! I just want the picture to show in the post without any additional effort on the viewers part! My pictures are on a sd card in my desktop! Any help is greatly appreciated!
  22. This sign only applies to health conscious barrel pickers! Well you can't have everything!
  23. It would be nice if we could say he died while doing something he loved to do! Hope that was the case and he didn't suffer from the fall! Nobody gets out alive!
  24. Hey that just might be a great way to avoid lame caches - I love mountain caches and the hike that goes with it! I should give it a try! In general I don't look to see how long since the last find - but maybe I should! I assume most of them might be harder to get to!
