  1. I guess that maybe by my 1st anny I'l have 20 or 30. Numbers mean nothing to me. To me and my wife, its more about the trip, or the hike, or the ride. So far we have logged 3 finds. One was a quick 1/4 mile hike with a nice ride attached. The 2nd was a nice trail ride with a 100 foot walk and the 3rd was a nice 3 1/2 mile round trip hike. Heck I have a couple of hides that are less than 2 miles from the house that I havent gone after. Saving those in case I need to drop a coin or TB.
  2. Gonna throw my 2 cents worth in here. I'm a newbie myself. You will get a TON of recomendations from these guys and most of them will be great and spot on....for the way that THEY Geocache and the MONEY that they can spend. One of the first things that you have to figure out is how much money you can really afford AND how much technoligy you want in your GPS. Once you have that done figure out which unit gives you the most bang for YOUR BUCK the way YOU want to GC. I really wanted a color screen. Couldn't afford it (without waiting for another 2 monthes) so I went with black and white. I dont see where I'm missing anything by not having color. I read all the "Which model should I get" threads I could find, did some research on the models in my price range and ended up with an Explorist 400. Then I went in search of a deal. Found one. Got the GPS (green), belt clip case, MapSend Topo 3D, USB and charger cables, rechargable battery and SD Card for $279. The only thing I didn't get is the battery clip that allows you to use regular batteries. It does everything that I need it to do and still has some capabilities that I haven't explored yet.
  3. Heres what I did and do. When I first got my Explorist 400 after I got used to the controls I took it out to my garden and let it set for about 5 minutes to get a really good shot of where it was. I then set that as a waypint for HOME. I marked the bench it was sitting on so I could tell exactly where it had been sitting from a distance of about 30 feet. I backed off to the edge of my property (about 50 feet) and did a GOTO. When I get within about 10 feet my needle goes nuts. Then I came at it 3 more times and again I get between 10 to 12 feet before nutzy needle. Now when on the hunt I do the same thing except I use 3 small orange cones (about 1 inch high) to triangulate my area. Once I have the cones set its hunting time. 2 for 2 so far using this method. Oh wait I only have 2 finds so I guess it works great.
  4. Still pretty new but a couple of times my step son and I took the 97 F-150 or the 98 Valkyrie. Now we use the wifes 02 Jeep and when these come out 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4 door I want one. The wife wants a camper for the back of the F 150 but if I have my way she'll get a small Class C instead.
  5. I knowthat there are some folks out there that would just love to have a GJTB to add to thier collection. Well you can close here. Jeep Gift Page 4th row center of the page is the die cast model that they are using for the travel bugs. Not afiliated with Jeep blah blah blah....
  6. Well there was at least ONE released in Colorado cause I got it. I got it from a cache, that took a real jeep to get to. I'm gonna keep it for a week (Only able to cache on week ends) and then take it back to the mountains somewhere. If I can't get out on the week end then I will drop in the cache around the corner from my house so someone else gets a chance at it.
  7. Yes I have the Explorist 400 I should have stated that and I have the 4.2.02 firmware so I guess I have the lastest as well. I'll keep trying to figure out why I can't load the TOPO maps. I'm not all that computer savy. Thanks.
  8. I'm trying to figure out which fimeware I have. I can't find it listed in the "About" section. When I recieved the GPS I also recieved a disk which said Fireware Update V1.01b. When I check the support page I see they have version 2.02. How do I know which one I have. Afraid to upload anything 2.02 if I already have it loaded. Another question is I can't seem to get the region I selected and saved in TOPO to load to the GPS. Thats why I went to check the fireware to begin with because in one of the MANY pages I read it said that TOPO wouldn't work properly with some units. I know the TOPO would with the 400 because I read all about some of the good folks here using it. Trying to get this figured out as the wife wants to go caching on Sunday and I dont want to have to hand load all the waypoints and use a paper map. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Jay
  9. Part of the problem is the search feature. It only lets you use words that are 4 letters or more. Earlier today I tried to do a search on Explorist 400. It wouldn't except it I had to take off the 400 and roll through a bunch of posts. I got my answer but had to read a TON of other stuff to find it. I'm at work right now, but when I get home I will post the info page that I found that gave me a ton of information about what GPS to buy and gps's in general. Maybe it could be added to the sticky.
  10. yes unless you want to buy a sub-meter accurate GPSr for a few thousand dollars. Nope I had a hard enough time squeezing what I paid out of the accountant, cause I already had 1 gps but wasn't having any fun with it at all, and geocashing was a pita bucause it wasn't very accurate. Thanks for the reply.
  11. I went and bought myself a new Explorist 400. So far so good. How accurate are they? I brought it to work to mess with on breaks and lunch. I saved a POI in the corner of the parking lot on break and then did a goto at lunch. I put the GPS on the exact spot and it said I was 9 feet away. This after setting there for about 5 minutes. Is that good? And is that as good as it gets?
  12. I received the Magellan Explorist Installation Wizard Ver 1.11 (1 disk) MapSend Software V 1.06 (1 disk) Magellan Firmware Update V 1.01b (1 disk) Magellan MapSend Topo 3D USA (Install disk 1 and 2 and the Map Data Disk)
  13. I just received my Explorist 400 last night and have it all charged up and ready to go. I brought it to work with me to learn mess with during breaks and down time. My question is can I load the software they sent with it to more than one computer? I want to load it here at work and at home, but don't want to load it at work if I can only load to one computer. I couldn't find anything in the documentation about mulitple computers.
  14. Since Im still a newbie to this I dont have much. Compass Batteries Gloves Maps Pens Lance Armstong "Livestrong" bands Free admissions to where I work (a museum) Some nice 2 X 3 notepads with a flip up aluminum cover (also from work)
  15. 80 era US Army issue map case. Every fits just right. A little SWAG, my map, compass, extra pens, extra notebook, batteries, and gloves.
  16. The difference between the 300 and the 315 must be the software or firnware. I saw a 315 the other day and it looks exactly like my 300.

  18. I have a Magellan 300 that I got several years ago. Been out caching with it 3 times now and no luck. It seems that when I get close to the coordinates, say about 50 meteres or so my GPS starts giving me false readings. Bouncing around from say .005 to .009 of a mile. It doesn't seem to do this while driving. It will actually read .000 when I hit a coord that I have imput to check it out. Anyone out there using one for Geocaching. On the first hunt I went on I kept getting a reading that was off by about 50 feet. I know cause I emailed the cach owner and he gave me the location. I went back out and found it and was off by about 50 feet. I also set up a test out in a greenway close to the house and again when I would get with in about 50 feeting it starts bouncing around. I'm going to buy a newer unit soon but until then I'm wondering if I should keep at it or just wait till I get a newer unit. It seems to work pretty good for hiking.
  19. I'm gonna do one on my Valkyrie on Monday. Got plenty of room for everything as I have hardbags on it.
  20. I found the site quite by accident while reading a hiking magazine. I decided to do some more research on a GPS that had been given to me to see if it was worth a darn or whether I should buy a newer one for hiking. The Geocaching idea seemed like a great idea to help me and my stepson spend some time together and connect. We've been on 2 hunts with no luck but that was more my inexperience with my GPS than anything else. I wrote to both owners for the caches to get some hints/help with figuring out how accurant my GPS is so we might be succussful on our next hunts. I'm going out again on Monday to find those first 2 caches as my step son will be with his father and I can spent more time figuring out my accurency without him being bored and lossing interest. We do a lot of hiking and now we can make the hikes a little more interesting for him.
  21. What would you think about free passes to something. I work at a museum. Its very family oriented place and they give us free passes to hand out to our family/friends. We get lots of visitors from out of town and I know that a lot of Geocachers go caching when in other cities. I have a bunch in my desk that I would like to leave in my finds for people that have never been here. Not as a trade item but as something extra. And not as an advertisement either. Would that be a fax paus?????
  22. This is still the best deal yet I've found on a new one with included Topo software. ($289) Add a case and your all set. GPS Package
  23. As usual I went whole hog when trying to get into something. But my smart money manager (read wife) brought me back to earth. I did a little more research on GPS's and I think that a Magellan Meridian Gold will work for everything that I need, Hiking and geocaching. I dont really need the city maps. So what do you owners think about them.I need to hear both the good and bad.
  24. I've seen this mentioned several times. Can you do this on rhis site or is it a GPS related function? I'm new to this so please forgive me. I did run a search on the site but couldn't get an answer. Is this a Premeum Member only tool? TIA
  25. I'm a low tech person. What are you refering to here?????
