  1. Release Notes (Website: Attribute search filters) - August 31, 2020 With today’s release, Premium members can now filter for any of the 70 available attributes in the Advanced Search filters on the Geocaching homepage and search map filters. Expand the filter panel and select the desired attributes to include in your search. (See also our release notes on Attribute Search in the Geocaching® app and New Attributes.) Filtering by attributes helps you find caches that match your plans, abilities, and desired experience, and lets you focus on the caches that will make your cache outing a success. If you’re geocaching with kids, search for “Recommended for kids”. Only have an hour for caching? Search for caches with the “Takes less than one hour” attribute. If you’re looking to take your kayak on a tour, consider the “Boat required” attribute. Your search results will show caches that include all the attributes you have selected. For example, you could search for caches that have the attribute “Dogs allowed” and “Recommended for kids” to show all caches that are both dog friendly and kid friendly. You may select up to 10 attributes at a time to include in your filtered searches. As you include more attributes, you will receive fewer results. For example, if you only select “May require wading”, you will get more search results than a search that includes “May require wading”, “Special tool required”, and “Available 24/7”. (But that does sound like a fun cache outing!) This filter update only includes attributes in their positive state. If you are looking to exclude attributes from your search, let's say it's hunting season and you want to avoid caches in hunting areas, you can still use a Pocket Query to perform that search. Note for cache hiders: Attributes communicate what to expect at a cache location. You can identify attributes for your geocache before submitting a cache listing or you can add attributes after publication by editing your cache. Learn more about attributes. 2. Release Notes (Geocaching® app: attribute filters) - August 31, 2020 With today’s release, Premium members can filter for caches with specific attributes on the Geocaching® app! (See also our release notes on Website attribute search filters and New Attributes.) Filtering by attributes helps you find caches that match your plans, abilities, and desired experience, and lets you focus on the caches that will make your cache hunt a success. If you’re caching with your kids, search for “Recommended for kids”. Only have an hour for caching? Search for caches with the “Takes less than one hour” attribute. If you’re looking to take your kayak on a tour, consider the “Boat required” attribute. The filter options include a subset of attributes that are commonly used by cache owners, as well as attributes that are most often searched for with Pocket Queries. If you filter for two or more attributes, your search results will show all caches that have all of the selected attributes. For example, you could search for caches that have the attribute “Dogs allowed” and “Recommended for kids” to show all caches that are both dog friendly and kid friendly. Note that the number of search results is going to depend on the caches available in your area. If you select the attributes “Boat required” and “Night cache”, you might not see any search results if there are no night caches on islands in your area. 6. Due to uncertainties related to Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), Geocaching HQ is postponing the Geocaching 20th Anniversary Celebration to August 21, 2021 at Seattle Center. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but we feel this is the best way to host the event in a safe and responsible manner. Many of you have made travel arrangements for the celebration and have been concerned about postponing your plans as the date draws nearer. So, although we hope we are able to meet at events by August, we know there is currently too much uncertainty to guarantee a safe event for all. We look forward to welcoming geocachers to celebrate with us in Seattle next year! More details are available in the Geocaching Blog.

  8. Release Notes (Website: Public Profile displays total Favorite points received) - February 10, 2020 With today’s release, we have updated the new Public Profile on Geocaching.com. You can now view your total Favorite points received on geocaches you own, both active and archived. This release is part of an ongoing effort to celebrate and thank geocache hiders. The total Favorite points replaces the stat of total trackable discoveries/moves. (The Trackable tab on this page continues to display statistics about trackables.) With this release, you can also view how many total Favorite points another geocacher has earned on the geocaches they own by visiting their Public Profile. See Geocaching HQ as an example. If you do not see the Favorite points, then select “Go to new public profile” on the blue banner. Updated Profile page, with total Favorite points earned on geocaches owned: To learn more about how Favorite points are earned, rewarded, and received, please visit the Help Center. 10. Release Notes (Geocaching® app: iPad optimization) - February 6, 2020 With this release, we have improved the experience of using the Geocaching® app on your iPad! The updated iPad app allows for full screen searching, planning, and geocaching. If your iPad has not automatically updated to the latest version of the Geocaching app®, you can download it here. 12. Release Notes (Website: Reverse Image proxy) - January 24, 2020 A recent change to the way images not hosted on our site are rendered is causing some unexpected issues. We apologize for any inconvenience. We have updated the way third-party images are processed before displaying them on the website. Allowing images to be inserted via an external URL can result (intentionally or not) in third-party cookies on the computers of those who view pages with these images on them. With this recent release, any third-party cookies attached to those images are removed before the images are displayed on the website. This release increases performance on pages that formerly contained these third-party cookies. It also supports security for users. We are aware this release may break some images that are entirely dependent upon third-party cookies. In these cases, we encourage geocachers to upload images directly to their cache pages and to use the image URL hosted on geocaching.com to ensure no third-party cookies are attached to images. Please visit the Help Center for more detailed instructions on how to add images to your cache page. Erin (Oceansazul) is watching this thread to answer questions whenever possible. Any posts in this thread should relate to features in this release. Comments unrelated to the release may be removed. Please direct unrelated comments to other appropriate threads. Thanks!
  13. Release Notes (Website: Background image on cache pages) - January 14, 2020 With this release, we have made it more convenient for cache owners to add background images to their cache pages. As a cache owner, you can now add a background image to your cache page in two ways: Drag and drop your background image to add it to your cache page, or browse your computer to select an image. To remove a background image, click delete: This change is in place for all new and existing cache pages. If your cache page currently has a background image, you can delete it and add a new one using the new feature. Please note that due to compatibility issues, Microsoft Edge users will not be able to drag and drop background images. Microsoft Edge will show the native “Browse” feature to select images from your computer. Nicole (nykkole), Associate Product Manager, is watching this thread to answer questions whenever possible. 16. Release Notes (Website: Update Coordinates log) - December 17, 2019 With today’s release, cache owners must use the new logging flow for the Update Coordinates log on owned geocaches. This is due to some changes that were required to make it possible to log the new cache Find Signal the Frog® - Locationless in 2020. (See the Geocaching Blog for more about the Locationless Cache.) We weren’t able to keep the Update Coordinates log working in the old logging flow while also making it possible to log the Locationless Cache in mobile apps. If you're using the old logging flow, it will look like this: To access the new logging flow, click the “Try it now” in the blue banner on the Post a New Log page. If you wish, you can opt out of the new logging flow after using it. If you're using the new logging experience, it will look like this and you'll be able to use the Update Coordinates log as expected: Sven (Bl4ckH4wkGER) and Chris (Rock Chalk) are watching this thread to answer questions whenever possible. 17. Find Signal the Frog in 2020 and score a Locationless Cache! In 2020, we will celebrate geocaching’s future, while also commemorating its rich 20-year history. In a nod to the past, we are excited to announce that a single Locationless Cache will be available to find in 2020. The cache will be owned by Geocaching HQ. Locationless Caches were part of geocaching during the very early years. The cache description for a Locationless Cache would give instructions to find something somewhere in the world and post a photo of it, along with the coordinates of where you found it. For example, find a drawbridge and take a photo while it was open. But the cache type didn’t fit well with geocaching. As a result, Locationless Caches were archived on Geocaching.com in 2005, and became Waymarking categories. Though Locationless Caches are no longer active on Geocaching.com, we think it will be a lot of fun to celebrate their place in geocaching history for one year only with just one cache: Find Signal the Frog® - Locationless in 2020 (GC8FR0G). Geocachers can log the cache by finding and taking a photo with either the official full-size Signal the Frog® mascot or the official 2020 Signal the Frog® banner. Both versions of Signal the Frog® will most reliably be found at Mega- and Giga-Events. The cache page is now published. It was originally locked to logging. However, that was keeping the cache from displaying properly in the Geocaching® app. Therefore, we have unlocked the cache page, but any logs posted before the official full-size Signal the Frog® mascot or 2020 Signal the Frog® banner make their first appearances of 2020 will be deleted. Go to the Locationless Cache page: Via the direct link By searching for GC8FR0G on Geocaching.com or in the‎ Geocaching® app. In order to log a find on the Locationless Cache, you must see Signal the Frog® mascot or official 2020 Signal the Frog® banner in-person and include a photo of you or a personal item with Signal in your online log. (Old photos are not permitted.) Unlike in the past, there will not be a field for adding coordinates to your log. However, you can optionally add the coordinates of where you found Signal to the text of your log. While we hope you see Signal many times in 2020, you can only log one find on the cache. The cache page will be archived and locked on January 1, 2021. So, make sure you find and log Signal in 2020! Listen to a new episode of the Inside Geocaching HQ podcast to hear more about the Locationless Cache, as well as the launch of Community Celebration Events.
  18. Celebrate 20 years of geocaching at Community Celebration Events Beginning today, eligible geocachers can apply to host Community Celebration Events in 2020. These events will enable cachers around the world to commemorate the 20th anniversary of geocaching with a new icon and souvenir. This cache type was originally known as the Lost and Found Event Cache. It was created for events that were hosted by geocachers from April 30, 2010 to May 3, 2010 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of geocaching. Just 362 Lost and Found Events were held, so a very limited number of cachers earned the icon. We’re excited that many thousands more cachers will have a chance to celebrate a big anniversary and get the redesigned icon in 2020! To be eligible to apply to host a Community Celebration Event, you must meet the following criteria: Attendance: You must have attended at least two (2) Events or CITOs within the last three (3) years (between December 2, 2016 and December 2, 2019). Activity: You must have logged a cache within the past six (6) months (between June 2, 2019 and December 2, 2019). If you meet the criteria, apply via the opt-in page by June 3, 2020. If you own multiple Geocaching.com accounts, please apply with only one account. Each month from January through October, at least 2,020 hosts will be randomly selected from those who opt-in (with geographic distribution). If selected, you will receive one of 20,200 or more Community Celebration Events! All official community volunteers (reviewers, moderators, and translators), and the primary accounts for all 2020 Mega- and Giga-Events will receive a Celebration Event. Winners must host events between May 2, 2020 and December 31, 2020. Events must be a minimum of two hours, and cannot overlap with events associated with a Mega- or Giga-Event. For more guidance, see the Help Center article on Community Celebration Events. Between Community Celebration Events and the Geocaching 20th Anniversary Celebration in Seattle, 2020 is shaping up to be quite a party! Here are answers to some common questions: How did you choose the number of Community Celebration Events to be released worldwide? Since we’re turning 20 in the year 2020, we think the best way to celebrate is with more than 20,200 birthday parties around the world! To provide the best experience for all attendees and to prevent over-saturation, we’re offering a limited, special release of the icon. Why are you distributing 2,020 per month, instead of giving them all at once? We believe there will be a lot of excitement about publishing these events. We want to distribute the effort of reviewing them by community volunteer reviewers over time. And we hope this helps minimizes people choosing the same date and time for their event. I just submitted my request for a Community Celebration Event Cache, when will I find out whether I receive one? The applicants selected to host a Community Celebration Event will be notified via email between January and October 2020. If you misplace the email, the Event page will be created on your Geocaching.com account and will display in your list of unpublished caches. Applicants who are not selected will not be notified. I don’t qualify to host a Community Celebration Event, what can I do? You may not qualify to host this particular cache type, but you are still eligible to host a regular Event Cache with your own celebration theme! I want to celebrate a geocaching anniversary on a specific date, what can I do? Unfortunately, selected event hosts won’t be determined ahead of time, so we are unable to honor requests for cachers with a specific date in mind. We recommend hosting a regular Event Cache with your own celebration theme, instead. I received the opportunity to host a Community Celebration Event Cache, how soon can I submit it to my reviewer for publishing? Community Celebration Events may be submitted for review up to six (6) months and no less than two (2) weeks in advance of your chosen Event date. How long do I have to submit my Community Celebration Event Cache for review? Events may be hosted May 2, 2020 through December 31, 2020. The final date to submit the cache page of your Community Celebration Event is December 17, 2020. I just logged drafts for finding a cache or attending Events or CITOs, why don’t I qualify to host this Event? All logging activity must have occurred prior to December 2, 2019 to qualify. Although the date of your draft may have been before this date, the date you submitted the draft is ineligible. How do I find a Community Celebration Event happening near me? We’re glad you asked! View a list of Community Celebration Events here. (This information is also available in the Geocaching Blog.)
  19. Today, we have updated the Challenge Cache Guidelines to add clarity to a few issues. The 9. Time-Limited section has been amended to note that is acceptable for challenges to require finding some number of caches per day of week, provided the number is cumulative over all years. Example, find 100 caches on Mondays. The 10. Source of Criteria section has been amended to note that is it not acceptable for challenges to restrict finds to caches published prior to a particular date. Example, find 100 Wherigo caches published prior to 11/21/2019. However, we do not want for this guidance to inadvertently affect Jasmer challenges, so we have also specified in 10. Source of Criteria that Jasmer challenges and variations are acceptable. Reviewers have generally already been reviewing challenge caches with each of these points in mind, so we don't expect this to be a major change for most regions. But we hope the added guideline clarity will reduce any potential issues.
  20. Today, we released several fixes and feature requests based on feedback. These include: Ability to print Lists Hover text on tabs now includes List names Styling fixes to the "Back to Top" button, Edit cache popover, and disabled states of icons
  21. Due to privacy concerns and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) considerations, we will remove the Audit Log on Premium-only caches on October 31. This is the tool that owners of Premium-only caches can use to see which users have viewed the cache page.
  22. Release Notes (Website: Search Filters) - October 23, 2019 With today’s release, we are enabling three filter options for Basic members on the Logged in Home Page Search Filters and the New Search Map Filters. Previously, these filters were only available to Premium members on these pages. Basic members can now filter by: Caches they have found Caches they own Caches hidden by another player For Premium members, all of the same filtering options are available. To highlight which filters are available to Basic members, we have updated the order of the filters. With the addition of radio buttons for some filters, you can now also select “All” in addition to just toggling on or off the filter. Updated filter panel for Basic members: Updated filter panel for Premium members: This change was made to allow Basic members the ability to filter on criteria that were inconsistently available to them on other parts of the website. As with the existing List details view, you can still: Add a description to your List Edit the cache name by adding a personal description or nickname Add or remove caches from the List Delete the entire List New Favorites view What’s new: The most impactful change is updating how you find your Favorites. Quickly click “Favorites” in the navigation control. Modernized look and feel. With the addition of the “Action Bar,” as well as the multi-select control, users can copy or share their Favorites. Additional data columns added to the view—Total Favorites and Found date. New visualization displaying the number of total available Favorite points, as well as the number of logs required to receive the next Favorite point. When will you see the new List experience? As mentioned above, we recently began deploying this feature. It will slowly roll out to geocachers over a period up to 8 weeks. This is to ensure a quality release with minimal bugs. You may see the new List experience today or you might not see it until the release is fully rolled out in late October. Brendan (brendanjw) and Erin (Oceansazul) are watching this thread to answer questions whenever possible. To hear more about the new Lists experience, listen to this episode of the Inside HQ podcast and find more information soon in the Geocaching Help Center. Any posts in this thread should relate to features in this release. Comments unrelated to the release may be removed. Please direct unrelated comments to other appropriate threads. Thanks!
