  1. On Monday, March 21 at approximately 9:00 a.m. (Pacific Daylight Time), we will take the Geocaching Forums down to complete the work described in this post. Convert to your local time here. The work may take several hours. Normal service will resume as soon as possible.
  2. Upcoming changes to Geocaching Forums - March 15, 2022 On March 21, 2022, we will introduce more streamlined structure to the Geocaching Forums. We wish to provide advance notice of the changes. The forum structure has remained largely the same for many years, despite significant shifts in user traffic and declining usage of several sub-forums. We have added a few new forums when appropriate (most recently for Adventure Lab and Experimental features), but have left many forums in place that are simply not used very much. The resulting experience can be confusing and difficult to navigate. After examining forum usage data and consulting with the volunteer moderator community, the new forum structure will be as follows (parent forums in bold, sub-forums are bulleted): Geocaching HQ communications: Announcements and release notes (merging two existing forums) General geocaching discussions: How do I....? (merging existing How do I…? forum with Getting Started forum) General geocaching topics (existing Geocaching topics forum will incorporate content from Event Caches, Photography, and Design forums) Trackables (merging Travel Bugs and Geocoins) Geocache types and additional GPS-based gameplay: EarthCaches (no change) Wherigo (merging four existing Wherigo forums) Waymarking General Waymarking topics (merging three existing Waymarking forums) Recruiting and category proposals (no change) GeoTours and reward geotrails (no change) Benchmarking (no change) Adventure Lab discussions: (no change) Play Adventure Lab Create an Adventure Lab Bug reports and feature discussions: Website bugs and feature suggestions (no change) Official Geocaching® apps - bugs and feature suggestions (merging existing iPhone and Android forums). Tags will be enabled in this forum. Posters can tag their threads as Android or iPhone and/or mention the platform in your thread title. We will tag many recent existing threads before merging the forums. Authorized Developer Applications (API) (renamed API forum which is currently nested under GPS/API/technology) Experimental features (no change) Community (no imminent changes to country/regional discussion forums) Geocaching and…: GPS technology and devices (merging GPS and GPS Garage Sale forums) Content from these forums will merge into other forums: Event Caches (merging into General geocaching topics) Photography (merging into General geocaching topics) Design (merging into General geocaching topics) The following forums will close and be available as read-only for at least one year: Ham radio Education Hiking and backpacking Off Topic We understand some may be disappointed by the closing of the Off Topic forum. Besides a significant reduction in traffic to that forum in recent years, it has also become more difficult to moderate due to the subjective nature of content that often conflicts with agenda-related forum guidelines. When the Off Topic forum was created in 2005, fewer online options existed for geocachers to connect about non-geocaching topics. That is not the case today. For those reasons, we have decided to close that forum. We will take the forums down for several hours on March 21 to implement the changes. We hope to complete the work that day with no need for additional downtime. Thanks for your patience during the process! 3. Release Notes (Adventure Lab®: Adding themes to Adventures) - March 8, 2022 With today’s release, we are adding 31 themes to the Adventure Lab® builder, so that Adventure creators can add themes to their Adventures. For Adventures with themes, players can see those themes on the Adventure detail screen in the Adventure Lab® app (app version 1.3.24 or higher). You can always find the most up-to-date release notes for Adventure Lab in the App Store or Google Play Store. Why add themes to Adventures? We are continuing to grow the Adventure Lab® platform to provide creators and players with tools to explore the world around them in new and unique ways. Adventurers, both existing geocachers and new players, are sharing that they are excited to see Adventure Lab explore more types of content, ideas, locations, and themes than have been traditionally supported in geocaching. For example, we are seeing highly-rated Adventures in theme categories such as ‘Food & Drink’ and ‘Exercise’ and we are hearing parents share excitement about Adventures that are specifically created ‘For kids’ to enjoy. Themes provide another tool for creators to build Adventures with compelling stories with a consistent theme woven throughout the Adventure stages. In addition to expanding the types of content available, we also know that players want more tools to find content that is interesting to them, particularly when visiting new places. Themes will help players choose Adventures they’re in the mood for. They might be hungry for Adventure and select one for ‘Food & Drink’, or in need of brain fodder and pick ‘Technology’ or ‘Mystery’. As Adventure Lab continues to grow and become your pocket tour guide, teacher, and entertainer, wherever you explore, we want you to be able to find content that interests you with themes. What are the new Adventure themes? How do I add themes to my Adventures? You can select up to three different themes for your active Adventures or one you are planning to create. To add themes, log in to the Adventure Lab builder and edit your Adventures. Make sure to select “Update Adventure” to save your edits. If you have available Adventure Lab credits, you’re required to add at least one theme when you create your Adventure. When can I see Adventures with themes in the Adventure Lab® app? Themes will be visible in the Adventure Lab® app after creators add them to their Adventures, on version 1.3.24 or higher. Some players will see version 1.3.24 available to update or install in the App Store and Google Play Store as soon as today, but it may take a full week before the new version is available to all players. 4. Release Notes (Adventure Lab® App: Filters) - February 15, 2022 With today’s release, players will begin to see filters for Adventures in the Adventure Lab® app (app version 1.3.21 or higher). You can find the most up-to-date release notes for Adventure Lab in the App Store or Google Play Store. What filters will be available?: 1. Today’s release: Filter by your completion status of Adventures: completed, in progress, and not started. You must be logged in to use this filter. Filter by Adventure type: sequential and nonsequential. 2. Upcoming planned releases: Filter by Adventures that are new within 30 days. Filter by estimated time to complete the Adventure. 3. Future filter considerations: We are monitoring feedback and are aware of additional filters that we know would be valuable to players. We intend to add additional filters in the future. Our goal with releasing this initial set of filters is to provide functionality that many players have requested, to solve pain points that many of you have reported, to deliver functionality to you as fast as we can, and to support a broad audience of Adventurers. When can I see filters for Adventures in the Adventure Lab® app?: This feature will be visible in the Adventure Lab® app on version 1.3.21 or higher. It may take 24 hours to see the new feature. 5. On February 17, 2022, at approximately 4:00 pm PST, we will conduct maintenance on the Wherigo.com and Waymarking.com websites that will require down time. Convert to your local time here. The expected down time is 1-2 hours. Normal service will resume after the window.
  6. Release Notes (Website: Enhanced Search Results) With today’s release, we are making key improvements to the results page after completing a search on Geocaching.com. We’ve also made additions to Search filters on the website for Premium members. Additions to search filters for Premium members: Search for other cacher’s finds with the “Found By” filter which can accommodate up to 10 usernames. Apply the “Find Date” filter to specify a date or range for the search results. Note: the results will stay within the existing 1,000 results limit. Improvements to search results: Edit search parameters from the top of the results page Two new columns are added to the search results page: Info: displays if a geocache is part of a GeoTour or has an active Needs Maintenance attribute. Trackables: displays whether a cache currently has trackables logged inside it. View the region/country a cache belongs to below the geocache name. Click the Favorite point total of a geocache in the search results to view the percentage of Favorite points to find logs: Jump to the GeoTour page by clicking on the GeoTour icon: Known issues: When viewing search results on relatively smaller screens, you may notice comparatively larger whitespace between the columns, as well as fewer visible columns. Currently, in order to see additional columns on smaller screens, select those columns from the dotted overflow menu. Our team is working on potential solutions to these issues. Finally, the entire search experience, from filtering to viewing results, is mobile-web friendly so you have the best experience across devices. 7. (This information is repeated from a just-published Geocaching Blog post.) Get ready for Virtual Rewards 3.0! 2022 is the Year of the Hide. As part of this, Geocaching HQ is thrilled to reward cache owners who have given so much to the game with Virtual Rewards 3.0, a limited number of Virtual Caches for the geocaching community. An opt-in web page is now available for cachers to apply for a Virtual Reward. The page is open until February 26, 2022. Approximately 50,000 geocachers around the world meet the criteria to apply for a Virtual Reward. Those who previously received a Virtual Reward are not eligible to participate in Virtual Rewards 3.0. From all applicants, Geocaching HQ will randomly select up to 4,000 geocachers (with geographic distribution) on March 1, 2022 to receive one Virtual Cache. Approximately 30 new community volunteers are receiving a Virtual Reward, as a thanks for giving their time to support the geocaching community. Winners will have one year to create their Virtual Cache. The caches must comply with specific guidelines. The first two rounds of Virtual Rewards have resulted in more than 6,200 new Virtual Caches caches created between August 2017 and December 2021. Those new caches are very popular by several measures, including total Favorite points, Favorite point percentage, log length, and find frequency. In addition, the review process has not created any undue burden on community volunteer reviewers. One of the most exciting aspects of the new Virtuals is that they are now located in a wider range of countries. Prior to Virtual Rewards, most Virtual Caches were in the United States. In fact, 81% of old Virtual Caches (placed prior to 2006) are in the United States. With the launch of Virtual Rewards 1.0 and 2.0, only 15% of the new Virtuals are in the United States and Virtuals now exist in 155 countries. See the following pie charts for the differences. Global distribution of Virtual Caches before Virtual Rewards: Global distribution of Virtual Rewards Caches 1.0 and 2.0.: Here are answers to common questions: Does this mean Virtuals are back for good? Not exactly. Yes, we’re hoping to see up to 4,000 new Virtual Caches in the next year. But we want to make it clear that Virtuals remain a legacy cache type. Are Virtual Rewards distributed evenly among countries? No. Countries vary in land area and the number of active geocachers. We use an algorithm to help distribute Virtuals among countries, while favoring countries still growing in geocaching. We set the qualifying criteria for cache hiders as low as possible, in order to achieve better geographic distribution. The approximately 50,000 cache hiders who meet the Virtual Reward 3.0 criteria represent 88 countries. During the 2019 launch, they were from 89 countries, a significant increase from 63 countries during the 2017 launch. Can I apply with more than one account that I own? If you own more than one Geocaching account, please apply only with one account. If we discover abuse, we reserve the right to remove a Virtual Reward. Could an account receive more than one Virtual Reward from Geocaching HQ? No, Geocaching HQ will not be providing an account more than one Virtual Reward, from the 2017, 2019, or 2022 launches. How do I find out when new Virtual Rewards are published? Premium members can set up Instant notifications to be aware when new Virtual Rewards are published. All members can use filters to conduct a worldwide search for Virtuals. Will there be more Virtual Rewards in the future? Assuming Virtual Rewards 3.0 goes smoothly, we will consider launching a similar set of Virtuals in the future. We would likely continue to make adjustments to the selection process to encourage new participants. Combined with previous Virtual Reward launches, are there too many Virtual Caches now? There are currently around 10,600 Virtual Caches, which is 0.3% of the world’s 3,326,000 active caches. Even if this new launch adds 4,000 new Virtual Caches, they will still only account for 0.4% of all active caches. Why not just make Virtual Caches available for everyone to hide? Because today’s Virtual Caches are rare, and because the remaining Virtuals tend to be well-liked, people often forget (or maybe never knew) that many problems led to the Virtual becoming a legacy cache type in 2005. The Virtual Cache type was originally created so people could place hides where physical caches were not permitted, or where muggles were so heavy that a physical cache was not practical. While the intent of this cache type was positive, it created significant problems for reviewers and often led to poor cache quality. Some people used Virtual Caches as a shortcut to create basic caches that did not require maintenance. Guidelines were eventually updated to require Virtuals to have special qualities to set them apart from other caches. However, that introduced so much subjectivity that the review process became difficult for both reviewers and cachers. The decision was finally made for the Virtual to become a legacy cache type and no longer permit them unless we could find a way to avoid the aforementioned issues. We feel that these limited Virtual Rewards release have helped to minimize the previous problems with Virtuals, while delivering more opportunities for the community to enjoy this beloved cache type. Most importantly, it’s a fun reward for cache owners who have contributed so much to the game.
  8. Release Notes (Website: Upcoming retirement of the old drafts pages) - February 1, 2022 As part of our continuing effort to reduce old duplicate pages on Geocaching.com, we will retire the old drafts pages, previously known as field notes, on February 15, 2022. It will be replaced by the current drafts page that was introduced in June 2019. We have added additional bulk select & delete capabilities to create parity with old drafts. Previously, new drafts only offered the option to delete single or all drafts. Now, players can also select multiple drafts and delete just those selected. . . Some of the other advantages of the current drafts page include: Upload drafts link at the top of the page Date respects user settings Mobile responsive page design Preview your draft text Sort oldest/newest first Detailed timestamp visible on hover In addition to providing notice of this upcoming change, we are soliciting feedback on how you would like drafts to be handled in the future on Geocaching.com. For more background information about retirement of duplicate pages on Geocaching.com, please visit the Geocaching Blog. Thank you! 9. Release Notes (Adventure Lab® App: Time to complete Adventures) - November 19, 2021 With today’s release, players will begin to see the approximate time to complete each Adventure in the Adventure Lab® app, on app version 1.3.14 or higher. The estimated time is calculated automatically once an Adventure has at least five completions. You can always find the most up-to-date release notes for Adventure Lab in the App Store or Google Play Store. This release is particularly experimental and we expect there may be some hiccups in the calculations we are performing. To get this feature out as quickly as possible to test and learn, we wanted to share a few details here in the forums so that you can share feedback on this update. When can I see time to complete Adventures in the Adventure Lab® app?: This feature will be visible in the Adventure Lab® app, on version 1.3.14 or higher. Some players will begin to see version 1.3.14 available to update or install in the App Store and Google Play Store as soon as today. After installing the new version, it may take 24 hours to see the new feature. Additionally, it may take a full week before all players will see the new version for update or install. This incremental release allows us to monitor performance of this new experimental feature. Thank you for your patience. Where can I see time to complete Adventures in the Adventure Lab® app?: On the Explore map, when you select a map pin, in the Adventure Detail preview On the Directory list view, on each Adventure Detail preview On the Adventure Detail screen How are estimated times calculated? We are calculating the approximate amount of time it takes a player to complete all Locations in an Adventure. From this, we are using the median of all completion times on the Adventure to calculate the estimate. The median is the number right in the middle. For example, if the completion times are 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 4,678, and 58,920 minutes, the median will be 7 minutes. The average would be about 7,000 minutes. In the data we have reviewed, and in interviews with creators and players, the median appears to be a realistic gauge of the time to complete an Adventure. An Adventure must have at least five completions, after May 1, 2021, to display an estimated completion time. This is the date we began collecting approximate completion times. Estimated time to complete an Adventure is categorized into the following time buckets: 0-30 min. 31-45 min. 46-60 min. 61-90 min. 91-120 min. 120+ min. --:-- No estimate yet We intend to watch this experimental feature release closely. We plan to update the algorithm if we learn there are optimizations that can be made. Erin (Oceansazul) is watching this thread to answer questions whenever possible. 11. Release Notes (Website: Search filtering) - August 26, 2021 With this release, filtering on Geocaching.com is faster, cleaner, and best of all, redesigned specifically to help you find the geocaches you want. The filters* on the Search and the Map are now a cohesive experience with a refreshed design for geocachers to quickly apply relevant filters and get out geocaching. Highlights of the release: The functionality of all filters has not changed, only the visual design. The filter panel now features collapsing sections which group related filters together. “Caches I have not found” and “Caches I do not own” filters are applied by default for Premium members. A filter to show geocaches that will fill your missing D/T grid has now been incorporated directly into the filter panel for Premium members. Geocachers can now search by geocache name in the main search bar, in addition to the "Geocache name contains" search box. The “Not found by” filter now supports up to 10 players (or 11 if you include yourself). Use the Search filter in the Location section to search by country, city, state, coordinates, or GC code. The default is a worldwide search. Also in the Location section, fill in the Distance from Location filter to confine your search to a radius from your chosen location. Remember, you can display your search results display in list form or directly on the Geocaching.com map by adjusting your preferences in Settings. *Advanced filtering is a benefit of Premium membership. 13. We are thrilled to announce the Geocaching 20th Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for August 20, 2022 at Seattle Center. Originally planned for 2020, we’ve postponed the party twice due to uncertainties related to COVID-19. But the delay only makes us that much more excited to welcome the geocaching community for an unforgettable celebration. We will share more details in the coming months on the cache page and Event website. There is even more geocaching fun to enjoy in the Pacific Northwest around the same time: GeoWoodstock (GC86VDF) - Abbotsford, British Columbia Saturday, August 13, 2022 We can’t wait to finally celebrate with you in 2022!
  14. Release Notes (Geocaching® Android app: Experimental features) - August 16, 2021 With today’s release, we have introduced an option for Premium members on Android devices to try out features that are not yet fully developed. As a Premium member on an Android device, you will see the option to turn on specific Experimental features in your app settings. In the future, some of the features may be released to everyone, while other features may be discontinued. We will continue to add to the Experimental features menu over time. For this initial release, you can turn on and try out the following feature: Empty D/T grid search Note: This release is on Android devices only. Given the nature of Experimental features, the feature set will be different between Android and iOS. 15. The Event calendar was officially retired today. You can find the new Help Center version of the Guide to Hosting Events here. Thank you to all those who provided feedback via the survey.
  16. Release Notes (Geocaching Forums)- August 2, 2021 Today we have upgraded the software used to power the Geocaching forums. This upgrade does not include any major functionality changes. However, the software provider, Invision, has made a few user interface (UI) changes. For example, previously some users had forum titles displayed under their username. For most users, their Geocaching membership status was displayed. Others had a customized forum title from when titles could be added and edited (ex. Keystone’s “Everything in Moderation” title shown in this screenshot taken prior to the software upgrade). The functionality to add/edit forum titles was actually removed with an Invision update long ago, but the titles remained visible for anyone who had added them before those software updates. With today’s update, the title field is gone. Another Invision change is that reputation points no longer appear under a user’s avatar. You can hover over the user’s avatar, which produces a new box with information including that user’s reputation points. 18. Release Notes (Website: Upcoming retirement of the Event calendar) - July 12, 2021 In an effort to reduce the number of old duplicate pages on Geocaching.com, we are planning to retire the Event calendar page and its child pages on August 12, 2021. Traffic to these pages has decreased significantly over the years as players opt to use more powerful tools like the new Search for Events or the Event widget on the new dashboard. The Guide to Hosting Events will move to the Help Center. In addition to providing advance notice of this change, we are soliciting feedback on how you would like to see Events surfaced further on Geocaching.com. 19. As a follow-up to the April 26 release, we have added the same souvenir sorting functionality to the public profile. Players are now able to sort souvenirs in the same fashion on their own profile page and other players’ profile pages. We hope you enjoy browsing your fellow cachers’ souvenirs and get inspired for your next geocaching adventure.
  20. Release Notes (Geocaching® app: Filter by Favorite points) - June 21, 2021 With today’s release, Premium members using the Geocaching® app can filter for caches by Favorite points. On the filter screen, enter the number of minimum Favorite points and apply the filter. If you choose 50, only caches with 50 or more Favorite points will show on the map. nykkole is watching this thread to answer questions whenever possible. 21. Release Notes (Website: Search to map) - June 17, 2021 With this release, you may choose to map search results directly on the map on Geocaching.com. Currently, search results default to a list of caches. If you prefer a visual representation of the results, go to Preferences in your Account Settings and check ‘Display search results directly on map’. Your preference will apply to all new Search links on the website, except for other players’ finds, which will only be available as a list. 22. Release Notes (Geocaching® iOS app: Experimental features) - June 14, 2021 With today’s release, we have introduced an option for Premium members on iOS devices to try out features that are not yet fully developed. As a Premium member on an iOS device, you will see the option to turn on specific Experimental features in your app settings. In the future, some of the features may be released to everyone, while other features may be discontinued. We will continue to add to the Experimental features menu over time. For this initial release, here are the features you can turn on and try out: Siri shortcuts Show Favorite points on logs Show friends list Add or remove Favorite points Note: This release is not available on Android devices but we are working on implementing Experimental features for Android phones as well. Given the nature of Experimental features, the feature set will be different on the two platforms. Please visit this Premium-only forum section to share your feedback about any of these features. 23. Release Notes (Geocaching® app: Announcement and Archive log types for cache owners) - May 17, 2021 With today’s release we are introducing the log types “Announcement” and “Archive” for cache owners on the Geocaching® app. Announcement If you organize an Event Cache or CITO, you can now post an Announcement log directly from the Geocaching® mobile app. Announcement logs trigger an email to all players who have logged a “Will attend” on your event. Use this to post important updates about your event. Archive Whether you own a physical cache, an EarthCache, Virtual Cache, or Event Cache—you can now archive your cache directly from the Geocaching® mobile app. Archiving a geocache permanently removes it from the app and from Geocaching.com. This action cannot be undone. nykkole is watching this thread to answer questions whenever possible. Any posts in this thread should relate to features in this release.
