  1. Well, that would certainly make me give you a wide berth - someone staring at tree bark. Do you talk to yourself too? That would add to the overall effect. Personally I just mutter to myself - works so far. Plus the stare. Just kidding- struck me as amusing.
  2. I was dissapointed with the actual reason too.... look here and seach for "floss" Some interesting applications.
  3. For those hard to reach caches, perhaps? Or, if you get lost in the woods, you could use it to snare small game and insects for food. But he's got a GPSr, so he can't get lost!
  4. OK, what's the floss for - not dental hygene? I know survivor sites have floss as a "must have", but not sure what you would use it for whilst caching.
  5. No. The terrain and difficulty values allow for the differences (assuming they're applied properly). It should be simple - you find a box you log a box. I stay away from true multis - but each to its own.
  6. Maybe too hasty - I was assuming a log was a "Found It" log, rather than a "Note" in gilbertf's post. Apologies if this is the case - Nil Satis Nisi Optimum

  9. quote:Originally posted by gilbertf:A log means you visited it. So if you visit your own cache to check it's still there, in good shape or to put a new book there or add content, it's logical to log your own visit to your own cache. I did this once after 2 persons logued that the cache was missing. I checked the cache and found it had been stolen and as this was a visit, I logued it then archived the cache. Visit implies log. Wether the cache is yours or not is not relevant. C programming probably disturbed my conception of what logic has to be though err, not really 1 - even assuming you could log your own cache, how could you log the stolen cache - you didn't sign the log book! 2 - Visit does not imply log - it implies Note as required for maintenance or TB moving! 10. ...... I walked a 13 mile round trip to hide my 'Malcom in the Middle' cache (got lost a few times). I'm dreading the day that someone logs it as having gone missing (Assuming that someone other than Seasider accepts the challenge and visits it ) Went there on Wednesday! - only saw one person in several hours (and an owl!) I doubt this will be found accidently. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum

So it depends on the best shipping and handling. $58? they're £100 ($160) over in UK. You guys have it so easy! Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
  13. Per Woodsmoke: If you do like I do and have all the posted messages emailed to you, there are several advantages - I would prefer not to receive warnings of each and every cache - I can look at the map and see what's new. I get enough emails insinuating a certain part of my body isn't big enough - I don't want to be dealing with any more! In the interest of free speech, I suppose a topic for those desperate to proclaim they’ve placed a cache would be OK, but fairly meaningless. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum

  15. Reference the correction question - the 38 is capable of accepting a differential GPS (DGPS) signal which can improve accuracy. It is available in UK, but it's more of a shipping thing from what I can see - a link's here. You also need another box to receive the signals. As you can see, this isn't a very practical approach for geocaching. The type of correction I think most people talk about is WASS - Wide Area Augmentation System. Here's a nice description. People think this will help them be more accurate, but don't forget if the hider of the cache wasn't using WASS then the coords could be off anyway, so maybe WASS isn't too useful for caching? This is probably not helping Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
  16. Hmm, looking at the site ManPyro refers to (delete the , from the end of the URL), it seems the 38 is a 2 channel receiver that sequentially scans up to 8 sats to calculate position. You might get a bit frustrated loosing lock on the sats. This is old technology compared to all the 12 parallel channel receivers available now. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
  17. I had a quick look through the manual - I think you could certainly use it for geocaching. It doesn't support mapping, but it does waypoints/routes and has the Trackback feature (so you can see where you've been, and follow your path back). It only uses up to 8 sats for calcs. Newer units can receive 12 sats at once. This would probably mean you loose sat lock more easily in poor reception areas, and accuracy could be reduced (although the book says not). I guess it depends on the price and what you can afford. With newer models Garmin provide software upgrades (new features/fixes) - you won't get these for this old model. Garmin site (www.garmin.com) has pages that allow you to compare the features/functionality of its range - maybe have a look there. I use a III+, which is also getting old now. If you did use the 38 for finding caches you could probably brag about it compared to the GPSV/meriplat owners Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
  18. I'm sure there were no responses when I sent this - now there are a few! This is the standard blurb: You can find it here (right hand side of the page) GEOCACHE SITE - PLEASE READ Congratulations, you've found it! Intentionally or not! What is this hidden container sitting here for? What the heck is this thing doing here with all these things in it? It is part of a worldwide game dedicated to GPS (Global Positioning System) users, called Geocaching. The game basically involves a GPS user hiding "treasure" (this container and its contents), and publishing the exact coordinates so other GPS users can come on a "treasure hunt" to find it. The only rules are: if you take something from the cache, you must leave something for the cache, and you must write about your visit in the logbook. Hopefully, the person that hid this container found a good spot that is not easily found by uninterested parties. Sometimes, a good spot turns out to be a bad spot, though. IF YOU FOUND THIS CONTAINER BY ACCIDENT: Great! You are welcome to join us! We ask only that you: • Please do not move or vandalize the container. The real treasure is just finding the container and sharing your thoughts with everyone else who finds it. • If you wish, go ahead and take something. But please also leave something of your own for others to find, and write it in the logbook. • If possible, let us know that you found it, by visiting the web site listed below. Geocaching is open to everyone with a GPS and a sense of adventure. There are similar sites all over the world. The organization has its home on the Internet. Visit our website if you want to learn more, or have any comments: http://www.geocaching.com If this container needs to be removed for any reason, please let us know. We apologize, and will be happy to move it. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
  19. Don't think you're upsetting anyone. Don't mind me - I pop up once in a while and vent, bit like a whale. It is an easy thing to log as "Found It" as this is the default choice. Even the more experienced can miss this in the excitement of the moment! Be careful if you're dropping a Travel Bug off at a cache you have already logged - make sure it's a Note entry. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
  20. quote:Originally posted by Devils Advocate:Hi ......... But I was wondering if logging your own caches is ethical.. ......... BTW.. can anyone tell me if I can use wass thing on Garmin 12!! Thanks If you have to ask, maybe you're just a teeny bit of a troll. Or just simple? (Nice name by the way). No - you shouldn't log your own cache. "Wait a minute, I think I would have hidden it here - wow, it is here. I found it " If you want to get into the real complexities, I believe there is an argument for logging caches that can move around, even if you started it, but I don't pretend to understand that kind of abhorrence. This sounds even worse than locationless caches. Well spotted though - we need this kind of eagle eyed monitoring to keep the game straight. Oh - Garmin GPS12 family - no WASS. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
  21. quote:Originally posted by Mr & Mrs Hedgehog: quote:maybe they should take up train spotting or some other less provocative hobby. Mr H is a train spotter and it's far from un-provocative. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2943304.stm and you'll see the trouble I was in. Yeap that me in the pic. Hence my Anorakaphobia cache at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=72876 Peter There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those that understand binary and those that don't. This is getting a bit off topic but I feel I must try and help. You can be fixed you know. They do wonders with electricity and drugs these days. Take heart - I met a Canadian who collected different kinds of barbed wire. (This is the serious part). To help you on your way, if you get up north at all, here's a half way house for you - just the station, no puff puff. sanctuary! Of course I can't mention this to the wife. She thinks hunting lunch boxes is beyond the pale (what does that mean?) - if I told her trainspotters dabble, she would sue for divorce, if she could stop laughing long enough. Got to go now - I have scenes from One Flew over the Cuckoo's nest in my head. Must drink more beer. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
  22. It can't be too difficult for the bit bangers in control of the system to write something that won't allow a Find log to be submitted on an archived cache? Obviously there are some people out there with low moral self esteem who desperately need to log Finds – some might say we need to try to understand them and let them log to improve their quality of life. Me – I’m not so sure (well, I am sure and the answer is no). If they can’t take the rigorous demands of Geocaching, maybe they should take up train spotting or some other less provocative hobby. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
  23. Can you still get sid out there? Maybe want to cut it some more. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
  24. Northumbrian, You're too nice. No signed log book (or substitute thereof in case of fullness or water damage) - no find. Life's simple - don't let Geocaching complicate it. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
