Congrats!!!!!

After further discussion among the volunteer cache reviewers, and with Groundspeak's consent, the cache owner's appeal has been sustained and the cache will be published without requiring him to make any modifications on the point that was appealed.
I think this is an historic event.
To the best of my knowledge, this is the first appeal brought to the forums that has ever been granted. I will admit to quite honestly believing that the whole "take it to the forums" thing was just pro forma to brush people off. I am quite pleased to have been proven wrong.
my faith is being restored -- yay!!
and, congrats azbliss. maybe on a trip home to PA I'll be able to swing by and find this one someday.

Hey all. I'm very interested in setting up something of a travel bug race to tour INDIANA. What I'm thinking is that a winning travel bug has to visit some number of regions within the state before making it to the finish line. I'm trying to figure out how to best describe these regions, and the precise number. I would like suggestions on both. If it helps, I'm looking at starting in early March and hoping someone would have a winner by the Fall GEOCACHING picnic.
what about to see how many different *types* of caches it can find? micro vs 20-gallon tub. puzzle vs ammo can under a fallen log. virtual vs earthcache. etc etc. Just because a TB can't fit into a cache doesn't mean it can't sit within a foot or two of it -- close enough for a picture (and most cachers can be intelligent enough to take a pic that isn't a spoiler).
Alternatively, you could designate "home" caches. So, for my travel bugs, once they finish their "race" this year to find mittens, the three little kittens will be racing back to their home caches. Elemental will be aiming for Elemental's Escape (here in Evansville), Xander will head to Xander's Hideout, and Sweet Bambina to Baby's Pad. You could pick out 5 caches around the state for each TB, and see which one makes it to the most of their 5 (or 10 or however many you pick)
Um, other options... you could do something like
This is travel bug "N" -- he is searching for a cache beginning with the letter N in every county in Indiana.
This is travel bug "O" -- he is searching for ...
(don't pick Q or X, you get the idea - A or T might also be bad, since there are too many caches that start with them "A ___", "The ___")
lemme think some more...
-
just in case, if anyone else is as lost as to where each county might be as I am/was (hey, we've only lived in this state for 6 months), the state has a pretty map (non-colorable) at
the colorable page doesn't give you a template to fill in, just a list of county names to click on.
-
This is a website that will let you color code county maps of states, perfect for showing the counties where you've GEOCACHED in INDIANA.
Mine
now to just figure out what counties we've found caches in... it was a lot easier to figure out what states we'd done!

The next TrailMix? I am leaning toward the Shaw Lake Trail in Clark State Forest in Henryville. Henryville is at Exit 19 off of I-65. The start of this trail has a legitimate 3-1/2 or 4 Hill to climb. After that the going is more of a 2 or 2-1/2 for most of the way. There is 20+ caches here and would be a good way to blow 3 or 4 hours. There are five caches around the lake that are a 2 - 2-1/2 hike that would take about an hour to grab. I am looking at March 11 or 18. I have to check my dates. I have a conflict on one of those days. I hope to have an event page up soon. Thanks to all the made the last TrailMix so much fun. Any ideas on how to make it better?
Deermark
FYI Deermark, if you're uncertain between the 11th or the 18th of March, U of E and USI are both on spring break on the 11th. Beffums was thinking about having a similar event on either the 11th or the 4th at USI in order to decrease the number of muggles around and depending on interest and when people could make it. We'd both also love to go on the next trail mix... As for improving the next trailmix, how about jetdryers in front of us to dry up the mud!
yeah, but I can always hold on mine until after Spring semester ends -- Deermark's sounds much more interesting than my idea.

sigh. If any of you are anywhere near Evansville and would like to put out a new cache or two - japtkd and I would appreciate it. We've put out 12 in the past 5 days, and almost 20 since Christmas, and only 3 new ones have appeared that anyone else has placed. sigh. I know I know, Mama Jane will say we need to drive up to Patoka and find her caches this weekend. I guess we'll need to.
ok, so maybe we got spoiled when we moved here and had 30 caches in a 5 mile radius from our house and about 80 in a 10 mile radius.
ok, since I whined, and she replied, I must say
THANKS MAMA JANE!!!!!!! (and soccerboy and bballgirl!!!) we couldn't get to all your new caches today - we didn't leave Evansville until after dusk, so the cemeteries were out by the time we reached Patoka. But, thanks thanks thanks thanks. we didn't have to drive to Kentucky to go geocaching! woot!

Not exactly. It is a travel bug, after all.
Contact the owner. With his permission, either replace the object and release the bug or mail it back to him.
actually, the honey wasn't a tb, and doesn't have an owner for it. it just has a piece of paper saying it's trying to get to Florida. no geo-name or real name. no tracking number. I was sort of at a loss on it.
-
congrats!
-
I'm going to guess that the consensus is that we should feel free to go ahead and just chuck it in the trash? (I kinda had the same response to a jar of honey in the woods... Ammo cans are NOT air tight after all!)

Ok, this is carrying over from a different thread in the forums, but it does have to do with caching in Indiana -- congratulations to Team Tigger for winning one of the top avatar sticks -- they look amazing! (maybe we'll meet at an event for caching in indiana in the future, and I'll get to see it some day)
HUH?????
Wulf
hmm, either you hadn't been following the thread where your avatar won, or there are two team tigger internationals, OR, you can't relate it to caching in indiana. I'll guess it's the third. SO, see, I figured, you'd be using the hiking skick when you would go out caching, in Indiana -- see, it fits, right?
Just never figured I'd find out about it here first.<g>
Look for it make the rounds of the events we attend. Maybe we'll borrow Son of Cyclop's idea and make it a TB.
Wulf
oh - sorry to spoil the surprise! oops
but still, congrats!

This thread is asking for tips about common mistakes made by cache hiders. I think that is a great idea for a thread.
Please accept the fact that the proper term is "reviewers" rather than "approvers." It is not that big of a deal. If you would like to debate the difference between the two words, please open another thread. I will be happy to respond there.
Let's get this one back on topic. Hopefully some other site volunteers will chime in.
I hope that this isn't taking this too far afield. But, if any reviewers could chime in -- could you also let us know if there are some errors that are only really common for specific TYPES of caches? (the obvious one is forgetting to give coords for all stages of a multi, but I'm just wondering, before I ever try to place anything beyond a traditional or a multi, if there's a major one for CITO's, or for Mystery caches, or for _____ that we chould be aware of before we try to place the cache).
if this is straying too far off topic, I apologize up front

Probably because most of the "can't get my cache approved" threads end badly and are closed.
The current thread of this type seems (so far) to be an exception.
maybe, but does anyone know if the discussion in the forums actually resulted in the cache being approved as it was? it's weird that after the very public discussion of the whys and why nots of the cache, now all of us that don't live wherever that cache will one day (hopefully) be will never know the outcome. and we have too little info to try to continuously keep searching for new listings to see if it's appeared. (or else we'd have to admit to having WAY too much time on our hands)
one of the OP's (of that thread) last post kinda hit the point - it's like reading 755 pages of an 800 page novel. (ok, that's just kinda sorta close to what they said, but I didn't have their quote handy - you get the idea)

Try shift-refresh? That cleared everything up for me.
much better - thanks!

Ok just found Scooby Do Part Deux TB xxx.
Cool travel bug as the arms move and its Scooby Doo Problem is the bottom has a tube filled with candy bones. It is sealed in plastic and the seal is on the candy but I thought cache items aren't supposed to have food items? WTD? BTW found it an ammo box which would probably keep animals out.
Actually, I have been wondering the same thing, as we found a jar of honey, wrapped in lots of plastic, but honey nonetheless, in an ammo can. we pulled it, but I haven't chucked it yet, in case I shouldn't. it's not an "official" TB, but does have a travel goal, etc etc
edit: oops, I also had missed the TB # - sorry

Well now, this looks like the place to ask a question. I lead a teen youth group at Church, and I have introduced them to the joys of caching, complete with the idea of planting their own on Church property (Large wooded lot). In stead of tracts, I am urging them to find objects with religious significance, and that would be actractive to families with children since this will be an easy cache. Two of the items are stuffed bears holding an bible, and a Jesus loves you bouncing ball. There is a two fold purpose in this exercise: 1. Team building 2. Thinking outside the box about their faith and ways to share it with others.
May I have your opinions and suggestions since I am a neophyte myself?
Terry
I think that's a perfectly valid idea for a cache.
I think the original issue was caches that are OVER-filled with tracts. Caches that are OVERfilled with any one item are a problem (maybe with the exceptions of seed caches and ones filled with CITO kits, but I'm betting that someone is offended even by these). I believe that most cache owners hope for some level of variety in their caches, even if it's a theme cache. As such, if there are so many pieces of one thing that you can't fit in a new item, trade out, and discretely dispose of the item later if you do not want it. Don't trash all of what's in there, but I think it is ok, if you open a cache, and it has 100 of the same pamphlet, to say that 3 or 4 would be plenty to leave behind.
as to the original question - you are not alone. I've also found caches that are filled to the brim all with a pamphlet promoting something. Some were religious, some were not. My decision on what to do varied. If I wanted to leave something in the cache, and it fit, I generally left it all there. If there was so much that I couldn't close the cache without removing some, I removed some (even if I didn't trade in. what's the value of a cache left open to the elements?). I've never removed all, but that is your decision (how many are "equal" in value to what you left in trade?) I've yet to come across a cache where the pamphlets were wet, etc, but in that case, I would remove all as trash, as I would any items in any cache that had been destroyed by the elements. Then again, even in that case, I'd probably try to leave some trade items in return. (then again, my logs are often the "took nothing, left ___" variety)

I upgraded from Firefox 1.0.7 to 1.5 and all is well now.
I upgraded and they're still not showing. hmmm.

and, in the defense of the Indiana reviewer, JAPTKD and I have been on a cache placing binge this month, so he's had at least 20 caches to review already, just from what we've placed. The first 15, all approved in 5 hours or less. I panicked when the last 5 took about 36 hours or so, but he got to them. Your time will come. (I PROMISE, we put out no new caches today. I PROMISE!!!) I know, you are sitting there thinking you've lost favor. you missed a tiny sign denoting change of land ownership or some other such thing. But, likely, he's just busy. He's generally really really effecient, so I figure we can't complain if every once in a while it takes him more than 45 minutes to find our new postings and approve them
who knows - maybe he actually found time to go find a cache or two himself!

I thought the font was actually larger, and overall, I really like it. The only problem I have is that there seems to be a bit of a bug, at least with my account. Most of the time when I click on a profile, I do not get tabs at the top to switch the pages (they're there, and I can click and switch things, but they are just a line, with no words, and are hard to highlight). It's happened on three computers when logged in on my account. JAPTKD (my hubby) has checked the same profiles with his account and not had it happen. (note: I do not think the computer is uot to get me. I figure mine is just one of several accounts hitting the glitch).
but overall, I give the changes a thumbs up. maybe you can reset preferences within your software to increase font size for your main computer?
edit: to clarify, I figure bugs are always part of the process when making software changes; but also that they likely don't get fixed if TPTB don't know about them

I had the same thought a couple of years ago and came up with this cache:
I have since archived it, but one of my comments in the logs:
I just wanted to get some of our local Geocachers to express themselves a bit, there is nothing more boring than a TNLNSL cache log, although I know I am guilty of it myself. I always TRY to put in a little something extra about the hunt or what was going on, the weather, or why I was in a grumpy/happy/oblivious mood while caching and want my fellow geocachers to do a bit of the same, 'cause we are some of the coolest folks around, ya know!
So, guess I'm a psychic dittohead.
ok, this will be going slightly off topic (I'm an Indiana cacher), but this "problem" affects all areas I believe. One of the most amusing caches in our area is
there are versions of this all over, but that's the one up our way. One thing I noticed was that after it was placed (and after a few of us found it), the logs on other caches got a bit longer. maybe there IS a point to wally world micros...
good luck getting a sentence or more out of your finders.

If you just are really into extreme caches, this one is not *that* far away, and from what I've been told (friends have found it), it's a WOW cache.
(aka GCJJTP)
note: it requires a partner for at least one stage, unless you are a very, VERY advanced climber.
enjoy the trip - Chapel Hill is great!

Congrats!
Now you get to add to the insanity of the others, as they all realize "it really IS there!!!!!" (ah, the bliss of living far enough away to not be able to really search for it).
so, does this mean you'll soon be taunting the others? oops, I meant encouraging them?
