  1. I have had a trawl around to see if anybody else has raised this, but whilst I like the new map layout (didn't like the beta) I really miss the ability to print out a map with numbers/caches on. I did post on the beta comments about this (and it was ignored!), but we tend to download the PQ to our GPS and then print a map with numbers & cache names for our desired 'hit' area to help orientate ourselves on the ground. With the new maps we just get a map with pictures of caches and have to handwrite the cache names on the print out - not very 21st century!
  2. We are relatively new Geocachers but thoroughly enjoying it! We placed one of our own new trackables in a cache today, but I submitted the 'found it' log before adding my TB at the bottom. I cannot now work out how to 'place' the TB in the cache. I go to the log for the TB and have a choice of 'write a log' or 'discovered it' but nothing else. Could a more experienced cacher (maybe who has done the same thing) tell me what to do? Many thanks. Colin
  3. We have just spent a weekend geocaching in Belgium (from the UK) and it was brilliant fun. I suggest you get over to the continent if you can - I appreciate it can be a bit dear, but depending on how fussy you are about accommodation etc. it shouldn't be too bad. Another idea - volunteer to provide an article about geocaching for publishing in local parish magazines etc. This will attract more members who will hide more caches! We recently approached our rector for permission to place caches in our local churches and he has asked me to write an article to publish on the church group website. Hopefully this will inspire more people to join in our hobby.
  4. Something not right then - I entered my home location when I first registered and then checked it again recently (a few weeks ago0 because I suspected this might be the case. If I go to 'update your home location' in my profile it shows my home location is set correctly. I will redo it and see what happens.
  5. Sounds reasonable. I am still a few years off retirement anyway. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy this new hobby.
  6. I bought something similar off eBay but with a single tube made from plastic drainpipe that 'joined' the two pieces together, so it pulls apart to reveal the cache. I haven't placed it yet but won't be putting it in a stone wall. I agree with those that say it could lead to damage by idiots. I figured I will find a pile of stones somewhere - like a disused quarry with public access. My daughter recently searched and found a cache down a disused mine in Cornwall - now that would be a fiendish place to place a rock cache!
  7. I am still new to geocaching - only started a couple of months ago - so I need to get some experience, but if in the future I wanted to volunteer my services - say after I retire - how does one go about it?
  8. Thanks - that is not a problem. I still know that I checked the 'activate' box when I posted last Sunday and then again when I edited it on Monday and it would seem that it wasn't active until I did it again today after adding a hint. On Friday (11th March) I clicked on the 'Activate Listing' under 'Navigation' and it would seem it still didn't activate. Maybe something local to me (web browser or such) so I will just have to be careful next time. I now notice that the 'Navigation' now shows 'Disable Listing' which it didn't before so it was obviously not activated previously. I have been a computer consultant & programmer for over 25 years, so these things don't surprise me. I always assume it is something I have done wrong. My wife and I are really enjoying this geocaching lark though. We manage to get out most weekends.
  9. When I go to 'Hide and Seek a Cache' and 'Search with Google Maps' I get a default of Green Lake and have to put in a 'Zoom to Address' Is there a way to set a local default rather than Green Lake so I don't have to zoom off?
  10. It seems one has to do this each time one edits the listing and then it resends everything. I left some reviewer notes when I originally activated it last Sunday and every time I edit it (add a hint for example) I get an email saying that the notes have been posted (and it see it added an entry to the log again). I would have thought the database would flag that the T&Cs had been agreed to the first time. This is why i suspect that I messed it up by editing it after I had activated it (i.e. either deactivated it somehow or sent it to the bottom of the review pile!).
  11. I fear that as suggested I have pushed it down the pile by activating it again ... I originally activated on 6th but have made a couple of edits (the latest today with a hint) which seem to 'reset' the activate date. Ho hum - will keep my hands off the keyboard.
  12. Sounds reasonable! I know our local reviewer is about because he/she just published his/her own first cache but it may be just work load or something. Hopefully soon.
  13. I am new to geocaching and really enjoying it. My wife and I have found some lovely local walks we weren't aware of. Last Sunday I placed my first cache (GC2PTD1) but it remains unpublished with the following notes in red at the top: Cache Issues: This cache has not been reviewed yet. Once it is published, it will be listed on the site. Check the logs to see if the reviewers have left a note for this listing. The reviewers will not see this listing until you enable it. This cache is temporarily unavailable. Read the logs below to read the status for this cache. 1. I cannot see any reviewer notes on the bottom 2. I have enabled it - a couple of times (and left a brief note for the reviewer regarding actual placement). A week seems quite a long time to wait - or am I being impatient? Any guidance from more experienced geocachers would be really appreciated. Colin
