  1. To enjoy the outdoors and see places I would have never known about. Over the years I have built up memories of places that are amazing, yet I never would have traveled down that road if it wasn't for Geocaching. All the people that I've met in this great hobby have been caring, friendly, and down to earth. I am looking to introducing my son (1yr old) to this wonderful world when he is old enough. Lately it has been hard to get out and cache, but the cool fall weather is my favorite time to explore! Time to get back out!
  2. Found the site while looking for a GPS in 2002, ended up getting hooked on it in Grad school as a way to relieve stress and see the countryside. It has allowed me to explore and see areas that I may have never known about...
  3. Wow, it feels good to get back into caching after a couple years. Colorado has some amazing caches and views, so I feel stupid for not taking advantage of it here. Started caching back in 2002, so I got some catching up to do!
  4. Usually Royal Robbins cargo pants, with a coolmax shirt and boonie hat for summer, Carhartt arctic coat in the winter with misc workpants in the fall winter. Rocks are rough on nylon and lighter pant materials.
  5. Today was a 2" x 4" hollowed out with the top sliced off and hinged. It was placed on the base of a wooden privacy fence, so it matched all the other wood in size and color. Nasty! But fun!
  6. In the past, I just sand it down a bit, wash it off to remove any paint debris/dust, and then spray a light coat of primer. Then I begin with light coats of each color, in a random (or close to random!) pattern. Great use of leaves, sbell111...that container looks great!
  7. Is there any way to easily import raw text from a spreadsheet (Excel, etc.) into Mapsource? I have 2 columns of UTM data, like 500 waypoints, but is there any way just to "cut-and-paste" them into Mapsource? THanks!!
  8. I also agree on the Surefire G2...you can get them at Sportsmans Warehouse or online. Go to lighthound.com or batterystation for cheap ($1) Lithium 123 batteries...
  9. I find a flashlight very valuable for even day caches...like scouting in logs and under rocks. Shining the light at different angles can bring out highlights you might not normally see.
  10. Oh man, don't get me started on flashlights! LOL! I, too am a member of CPF and have too many lights. I usually carry a ARC aaa on my keychain, an LSH-S in my pocket, and sometimes a Nuwaii Q-III for some longer throw. As for knives, well....that's a whole 'nother thread (and websites!!). Gadget addicts unite!!! Great thread!!
  11. Actually, garlic mustard is my "speciality"! I am working on the effects of prescribed fire and herbicide on garlic mustard regeneration for my thesis. Natureboy1376, previous studies have shown that repeated annual dormant season (late winter, early spring) burns are the most effective. But since the seed remains viable for up to 5 years, you have to burn for at least that length of time... Any more questions, just ask!
  12. Howdy! Have you seen the two newest GArmin units due out Feb? I'm not sure I like the looks of them...kinda retro-80s vibe going on... GPScity has them for $113 and $148. Is the basic ETREX going to be replaced by this you think? Take it easy!
  13. I have come across some "re-radiating" antennas that can be used with gpsrs that don't have an external antenna jack. The problem is, the one I have seen (Tri-M Re-Radiating Big Brother Antenna) only has a 12V lighter plug, so that limits what I can do with it!! Are the any signal boosters/antennas out there that can work on my Venture? THANKS!
  14. Anyone know where I can get the geocaching.com stickers with the blank line for the coords? I need one for a new hide for an ammo can (spray painted camo! ) THANKS!

  16. Hello! I read somewhere that you should recalibrate the compass after installing new batteries...Is this true?? I have an ETREX Venture, and was wondering if doing this might increase the compass accuracy a little bit...? THANKS!

  18. I have one for sale...let me know. It is made by Garmin, and is black/green. New they retail for like $14.95. I will sell mine for $8+shipping. Let me know if you want it. It only fits the basic(yellow) Etrex. THANKS!
  19. Ok...how about $15+shipping? I just picked up the new case at Best Buy, so I'd just like to sell the cable and old case. Any takers? Both look brand new. Well taken care of... THANKS!
  20. Selling the basic GARMIN eTREX case (olive green/black with the clear window...retail $14.99) and a data cable for $20 +shipping (Priority Mail) Both are perfect and the case has no abrasions, tears, scuffs, etc. The data cable looks and functions perfect. OR trade both for a NEW GARMIN case that fits the Venture, Summit, Vista, etc (the ones with cursor stick...) THANKS!
  21. I was involved in a tipover yesterday, and my etrex went for a quick swim. I was thinking it would be alright and I tried to turn it on and nothing happened! Thinking I just needed to dry it out, I waited a few hours and tried again...it worked, but couldn't lock on any sattellites and the data was messed up. I tried this morning, and the screen was full of condensation and the unit turned on, but I couldn't shut it off! I had to take out the batteries! the Up and Down buttons are non-functioning (stuck) and so is the ENTER button. Basically it is broken. I have NEVER had it in the water, and I thought it would be fine...it was even in the GARMIN neoprene case. For something that supposedly can withstand 1M for 30 min., it didn't even come close!! Should I send it back to GArmin? OR take it back to Best Buy where it has an Extended Warr.? This is not good that something that should be waterproof faired this poorly...

  23. Hello! I found a way to connect the two units, but is there a way to use the display on the Palm for navigation? Is there any software to allow this, or is it not possible? I thought the GPS antenna could be used for satellite lock, and use the Palm maps and display for navigation...probably a logistics nightmare! THANKS!
