  1. Yep, the "FTF" has uploaded a photo which confirms it was an April Fools joke. Kougarok remains unfound. Yawn.
  2. Exactly. If they're just logging something quick from their smartphones, they won't be online looking at your profile. To answer your question, no, I don't have anything like that on my cache page. I haven't found lame logs to be too much of a problem. I still get pretty good logs on the caches that really matter to me. The other ones, not that they're bad caches, but sometimes people just can't think of anything to say or they're lazy or whatever. Fortunately I get enough decent logs to offset that.
  3. It's too bad there's not a privacy option. For now, I think your best bet is to use the personal cache notes or GSAK and log things later. I don't know your ex, but I'm guessing he will eventually lose interest. You could create a new account. This might work, but he might found out your new name and then you're back at square one.
  4. I sympathize, but you are not allowed to do that. Even if their online log is crappy, as long as they have their name on the physical logbook, you have to let it stand.
  5. You have excellent taste! Here's a similar photo of mine. Looks like you have the original seat and handlebars. I replaced those in mine. Tried many seats until I found the right one for me. It's a good bike for people who are afraid of falling and also for frequent stops. You can sit on the seat with your feet flat on the ground. The basket is good for bringing extra pens, snacks etc.
  6. Seriously, you folks need to cut it out now. What kind of bikes are those? B. Mine is on the right. It is a Townie Electra. It's perfect for caching on the flat. You are sitting upright so it's easier to enjoy the view as you ride along and easier on the shoulders than a traditional bike. I changed the original handlebars so it's even more comfortable. One of these days I'll add a mount for my smartphone. One the left we have the A-Team and the G-Force's bikes. Not sure what kind they are. Sorry the snow is getting you down. Maybe some photos of flowers would help. I know when I post daffodil photos on social media every February, it gives hope to my friends and family who are further north.
  7. Geocaching is pretty good right now where I live, on the West coast of Canada.
  8. I've got the same GPSr as the OP. Not to confuse things but rather than copying the GPX file directly to the [drive]:/Garmin/GPX directory it may be easier to use a basic waypoint manager such as EasyGPS. It will read in a zipped or unzipped GPX file, then caches can be "Sent" to the GPS without having to know where they're going to be stored. In fact, I probably do that more (but use GSAK) than copying a GPX file directly. I had a 450 and used GSAK as well, to generate the .gpx file and transfer it to the GPS. I was going to suggest the OP's GPS has old files that need clearing or maybe just resetting the whole thing from scratch. That's really the type of thing easier to fix in person. It can be done over the internet if necessary, but is more tedious!
  9. Probably easiest to contact your local cachers and find out who's the biggest geek in town. Then get them to look at it in person.
  10. Actually, I know people who go geocaching with old smartphones. They don't have data plans, and download cache data at home via wifi. Then they go geocaching using the downloaded cache data. I have a newer smartphone and don't have a data plan either. I simply generate a .gpx file with GSAK and transfer it to my phone. I never cache online.
  11. Looks great. I have to admit I haven't yet explored the search function, due to its complexity. This page will help. I hope the information in it is incorporated into the official site.
  12. What I don't understand is the continual smartphone bashing. I can imagine it would be a turn off for any new geocacher visiting the forum. I keep saying that I find and hide caches successfully all the time with my smartphone, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I wish a "voice of reason" would step in during some of those threads and correct inaccurate information. Presumably if Groundspeak is promoting smartphone caching, they must think it works pretty well.
  13. I wouldn't say it's been unappreciated or unnoticed. I know the OPs appreciate your posts, as do the rest of us.
  14. The sun's out later. Maybe come home, have a quick dinner and take the kids for a "hike". Maybe bribe them with candy or ice cream, but your wife doesn't need to know that.
  15. I've run into quite a few people who have heard of it. However, I've met many more who have never heard of it. Amazing, really. What's even more shocking is the number of people who not only know about it, they've done it and don't have much interest in doing it again.
  16. Went to the doctor today and she told me I must do at least 1/2 hour of exercise each day. Came home and told Mr Incredible that the doctor said I must go geocaching at least 1/2 hour each day. Doctor's orders and who am I to argue!
  17. 2409 finds / 3589 posts = 0.67 Clearly, I spend too much time on here. Fortunately I am going caching this weekend and the ratio will improve.
  18. You don't have to buy a GPS, if you can borrow someone's smartphone.
  19. I did this for my 2 series. It seems like a no-brainer. Can't understand why everyone doesn't do it.
  20. I like to hike. It's just an excuse, really, to get away from people and to increase my chances of being eaten by a bear. Finding little plastic boxes along the way makes things a little more interesting. Ditto for biking, except it's cougars, not bears.
  21. Waterproof paper is great, except for cachers who use ink. I use Rite in the Rain paper in all my caches and it works fine.
  22. That would be a pretty rare situation where the logbook is moldy or damp and the contents of the cache OK. In fact, I dont think Ive encountered such a situation. If the logbook is that bad, it probably means the container is not waterproof, in which case silica gel wont help. The best thing is to post a Needs Maintenance request. Hopefully the cache owner will see that and come along and replace the logbook. Silica gel can help sometimes and I do appreciate it when I find one in my cache, but Id be awfully careful and what you use. Some of those packs will split right open which just leads to a mess. I like to carry diaper wipes, a towel, and some replacement logbooks with me. I will do maintenance on other peoples caches under certain circumstances. For instance, if the cache container is basically good, but is up a hiking trail and water got in somehow. Its just easier for me to take a minute to dry it out, than the CO make the hike up there. I carry ziplog bags as well. Its pretty rare that I will add a new logbook, but if needed, I will put the old one in a ziploc bag. If its a micro, I will take the old log with me and offer it to the CO. Havent had anyone yet want it back. One other thing to realize is that alot of caches get wet inside because the get opened up in the rain. This happens alot where I live because it rains just about every 2nd day in the winter. These are the types of caches which can benefit from a little wiping down. Silica gel not so helpful in this situation.
  23. Objection: Assumes facts not in evidence. I have to agree with niraD. Unless you have all the information, how could you possibly come to the conclusion that the CO was being irrational? Unless they are completely insane, they must have a logical reason to have behaved the way they did.
  24. If they get upset over 1 'TFTC', as a cache owner, they're going to get upset *a lot*!! Maybe time for them to start on blood pressure medication.
