  1. Thanks to all - first, yes it is a real cache (and of course I have logged it). Wasn't optomistic that 'navigation distance' to cache came into play - but didn't hurt to ask. Good suggestions on tagging up with the reviewer. I might check with the neighbor across the street and see if he is willing to let me place it near a big boulder at the edge of his yard. I might be able to make a container that will look like it belongs next to it. It'll give me an excuse to intorduce him to geocaching if he is unfamiliar. I'll keep my eye on the other cache to be sure I am ready if it gets archived. Thanks for the input.
  2. Quick question on old post. I live near another cache. I wanted to put something in my yard right at the street, unfortunately, the furthest I can get from the other cache and still be in my yard is 490 feet Line of Site. However, in order to get to mine from the other, you'd have to go about 700 feet because you can't walk/drive a more direct route. This is a little more than the minimum requirement for saturation. Are there any exceptions to the saturation rule? Like when placing on your own property? Just think it would be neat to see folks finding it. Should I just submit it and put a note to the reviewer about the extra distance required? Thanks
  3. Well it wasn't full. Only 4% used. I wore it around my neck for about an hour with same batteries and 'goto' a wp selected with tracks enabled. Worked fine. Came home and charted my entire 18 mile errands run. I could also see a very choppy track were it was acting up. I like the idea of something being in the batt compartment. The only other thing is maybe the ride on the quad handlebars is too rough. It worked fine in two dirt bikes on many of the same trails. Since I could not duplicate I tried to verify the firmware was up to date but when I use Garmin dashboard it does not show the version. EASYGPS reports firmware is 3.3 I think (gave back to my daughter already). I did a reset (power, page, enter) and confirmed I wanted to do a reset. Still would not show any firmware details on dashboard. I also loaded up a bunch of caches near her house to test it for a while. Hopefully it won't happen anymore. Thanks for all the input.
  4. That is probably it exactly. I did not look to see the percentage of the tracks, but I did not erase the previous trip. If I remember correctly she had just under 50% memory when I started the new track. Thanks, I'll update once I confirm.
  5. Now, if I can just figure out how to get them off the Garman eTrex H (have serial cable). Read about GPSBabel, but had trouble installing. Not sure if that is going to do what I need anyway. Now don't I feel stupid - Seems EasyGPS (free download from Geocaching.com) pulls the tracks no problem. As easy as 1. Connect your GPS and Open EasyGPS. 2. Choose GPS from menu, then Receive From GPS - Select Tracks. 3. In EasyGPS, Choose File - Save as (name your GPX file) 4. Go to GPSVisualizer.com, select your saved file and format and click GO (I used GoogleEarth). Click on the KML file and it opens in Google Earth. Very easy - like magic! Thanks everyone!

  7. Thanks, just looked at it seems like what I am looking for.
  8. After reading the forums for several hours still haven't found my answer on how I might map my tracks. Just recently mounted my eTrex H on my dirt bike to make caching a bit easier on the trails. One of the neat features is the use of tracks. It draws my route on my screen as I ride. I'd like to be able to overlay this on a map when I get home. I have a paid version of GSAK, but suspect I might need another app. So one, is it possible to do this, and two, if so any recommended apps to use or links to GSAK or other tools. I do have the serial cable which I use to transfer god between my computer and GPS.
  9. This happened with me. The person logged the grab then went months without dropping. I just looked at his/her profile and saw no recent logs. Eventually I sent a friendly note saying something about the nice weather and hoping they might get a chance to start the TB back on it's journey. No reply, then a few more months saw they had logged some finds. Another friendly note and a few weeks later it was finally dropped in a cache. Good luck, just when I thought mine was out of commission, it is back on it's way and has been logged about 6 times since.
  10. Was out with my daughter recently and had no issues with her HC. Went again a few days later and started having trouble. Swapped out batteries twice. It just shuts down. I did confirm 'on loss of external power' stay on was selected. Thought it was fixed then it shut down again. The only difference is it was mounted to the quad handlebars rather than the dirt bike. Thought the batteries might be loose, but the batteries fit tight in the compartment. At a loss. Any ideas?
  11. There is one I logged that had hundreds of minature caches inside. Only one of these were the actual cache. It took me a while, each decoy had a note that said 'keep looking' I almost gave up. I think the container was not in it's original configuration because I think there was supposed to be a clue that would have made it unnecessary to open the decoys. Can't really go into more detail without spoiling. My only comment would be to let caters know ahead of time they will need to expect to do some work prior to logging it. Have fun.
  12. I use a couple of strategies but let me say when the woods are thick it is easier to lose your way. First, I stop and turn around to see what the way back looks like every few minutes. Second, I look for landmarks that can be seen along the way. In my case a mountain peak is one of my favorites. I try to remain cognizant of where it is (like on my left or walking/riding toward it). If I am not after a specific target and I come to a fork or intersection I always choose the same direction for the day. As in take the trail to the right. That way on the way back, even if you don't recognize the intersection you now to go (left if you went in always turning right). The most important is not to panic and not make multiple bad decisions. For example, let's say you think you know the way back, if unsure, stack rocks or sticks or something that looks manmade, that way when you realize you were wrong you can go back to where you veered off the path. Look around and try to regain your bearings. I spend a lot of time on dirt bikes in the woods. Sometimes it really surprises me when studying a trail map and getting my location I am way off of where I was expecting. I have a favorite route that is 30 miles long it feels like you do all 30 miles heading generally West but is actually an elongated circle. When first timers are with me they are surprised when we get back to the truck because they too felt like we never turned back toward thevway we came. This is because the turns are very subtle. Don't get me wrong, although I don't like to admit I get lost, there are many times I'm not quite sure where I am. These strategies have helped me get home even with out electronics. One more thing, always a good idea to tell someone you plan and when you expect to wrap up. When I have my phone, I usually send the coordinates of my truck and the currect time and a rough estimate of how long I expect to be to my wife's email just in case, that way if someone needs to come find me they have a starting point.
  13. Yes, was using c:geo on my bionic. I had only used it a couple of times. I have used it much more since and have a better understanding of it. Entries may have been stored but patches to the app have installed since I am not sure they'll still be there. I'll look them up by gc number to see if I have unsubmitted logs. @ lil devil, thanks for the link. I clicked the link but said nothing there to submit. Thanks to all for the feedback. I'll post an update if I find unsubmitted logs. Update: I looked back through my daughters logs, seems most of the caches we found were some I had logged already so did not log a second time. Must have just missed the one that sent me down this 'lost log entry' path.
  14. Was looking at nearby caches and noticed a few I had found and logged (I am almost positive). It seems it was September 2011 timeframe. No deletion notices. So was wondering if maybe others had similar issue. One of these was with my daughter, I thought I recognized the name and checked the logs and saw an entry from her saying something about found with me, yet my entry was missing. Others were on trips by myself so those i will need to physically go verify those. Anyone else?
  15. Thanks, that was it, I logged these in the field on my phone using c:geo for droid (nice app so far and free too) Turns out the inventory option is on it too - just had to scroll down. Fixed using method you described on computer. Mike
  16. I have seen others log a TB as 'visited' another cache before marking it has dropped. I can't figure out how they did this. I searched the forum but no luck finding the answer. For example, I picked up a bug on 18 Oct, visited 3 more caches on 19, and 20 Oct that were too small to leave it. I figure the TB should be credited with the mileage. Saw this on one I was watching a while back just can't figure out how to properly log. Mike
