  1. When I first went geocaching with my mom, we used a car gps. Then my parents bought me a nice handheld gps for my birthday off of Amazon. Its called a Garmin Etrex H and since my parents didn't know much about geocaching gps's and I told them to stay cheap so they got this 80-90 dollar one. It didn't come with the pc interface cable which costs 20-30 dollars. I want the cable because I am starting to get serious with geocaching and I want to find a lot more without having to enter the coordinates manually. Do you think I should buy the cable or a new, nicer gps that I can keep for a long time?...Because I haven't heard of anybody else that has my gps and it seems like it is missing a few features compared to other gps's.

Also, can someone explain if GSAK is actually free and what the "nag screen" actually is...I don't understand. How much does it cost?

I'm afraid I can't help with your gps question. But here's a quote from gsak website:

GSAK is FREE to download and use, but after 21 days of unrestricted use you get a nag screen. You can keep using GSAK after the 21 days, but if you want to remove the nag screen you will need to register the program

So basically, gsak is free, but then after 21 days, my guess is there will be a popup which says to register or something like that. Hope this helps.:)

  2. I'm new to caching and I have checked out other cache websites and to me GC.com is the best site out there. I have found myself wondering about using other sites also and was wondering if this is frowned on or is this something that others do here?

can frown on it all they want, bottom line is you can't tell people what to do

talking about it here is a different story, like any "business" GC doesn't really want people coming here chatting about the "competition"

I believe its fine to talk about it, just don't "advertise" it. :anibad:

  3. In an effort to be funny, I often put attributes that while true, are compleatly usless. Like no horses on a downtown cache, or no camping on a chace in the city near the freeway. Don't know if other cachers find them funny or not.

Are these the type of useages you want to ban, or ones that are false.

I want to ban the ones that are false.

  4. Rabbits are cowards whose only response to danger is to flee, and their entire life is devoted sloth, lust and gluttony. I find the comparison to geocachers to be insensitive and offensive.

Well, fleeing from danger can be a wise thing to do. :) Racoons should learn that and not walk into danger and get hit by cars. Rabbits work pretty hard to build an underground nest too, and they all need to eat.

  5. Well Groundspeak only has 40 employees, I'm sure that they don't post their yearly financial statements for obvious reasons, I'm sure that they host outside of their Seattle office hopefully at multiple locations for safe data backup, as they use youtube for video hosting, and another third party program for these forums, You are right that I want the premium member features and benefits without paying the fee, but I don't think you can call search filters "premium". The main thing that bothers me about it is that this is a members run community, members create the caches without the help of Groundspeak, members moderate this forum for free, members audit the caches before they go out without getting paid by Groundspeak, all Groundspeak does is charge membership fees, sell "official geocache" items, hosts the site, and moderates events organized by individuals and volunteers.

You sure know a lot for only caching for a week...sorry...maybe I am wrong...but a first week cacher is more excited about their next find and how to use a GPS and not how many employees Groundspeak has....I didn't even know what Groundspeak was for a long time after I began caching...and even long to know what was in Seattle....what is it that you really want? Come on...be honest.

    +1!

  6. I don't know about you, but I would assume that for most people it's perfectly possible to be somewhere and not be geocaching.

    Nope

It's not possible for me to be anywhere and not be geocaching. i don't think I'm alone...

You're not alone. When I vacation, I want to grab a cache somewhere...

  7. I am pleased to announce that Magellan has chosen to sponsor the Taylor Park CITO on 4/23 in Duvall, WA. This is one of only seven CITO events chosen by Magellan from around the world. They will be donating a Magellan eXplorist GC GPS device as well as some smaller items, which we will raffle off at the CITO event. Pretty cool if you ask me. Hope to see you there!

    COOL! :)

  8. Not bad, with a little editing:

A Bulgy Bear stands touching a ball to the roof of his cave and drops the ball. After X seconds the ball hits the floor of the cave. What's the height of the cave (in feet)? Add Y to this number to get the last Z digits of the latitude. The bear has two ropes. One is A feet long and the other is B feet long. Which one can the bear use to get down to the floor? Add C to the rope's length in feet to get the last Z digits of the longitude.

    Thanks, fizzymagic! :)
