From umc's list above, I actually use Case One with my GPS V. I picked it up at a local trail shop and they had two sizes. The smaller one was a bit too small, the larger one fit the GPS V perfectly. It clips (and velcros) on to the back of my pack. The flap over the top of the case has openings on either side which fit around the antenna, giving it a clear view of the sky. Great setup without the need for a remote antenna.

One note though, the clip is set up like a belt clip, so may not work great with a pack's shoulder strap. The velcro strap is towards the bottom of the backside of the case. It is oriented horizontally, so would accept a pack shoulder strap correctly, but I'm not sure it would be stable enough (being at the bottom of the case) to do the job alone.

My bad. I checked http://www.garmin.com/unlock/index.html which *still* lists the date as 7/11/02. Anyway, glad I'm not holding my breath icon_rolleyes.gif

The CS update in the GPS V deluxe comes as an all-unlock. That's what makes it "deluxe" in Garmin's world. You pay for the all-unlock up front when you buy the GPSr. Whether it makes sense to buy now and upgrade later or wait for the deluxe I don't know - I haven't been watching prices for the deluxe. We reasoned out pricing for a deluxe upgrade in this thread and it seemed like a good deal at the time (and I couldn't wait any longer to part with my money).

Supposedly, the new CS will have much of what is available on MG. That is not apparently the case for the old CS as I've read numerous posts in the past stating that unless you lived in (and didn't travel out of) the major cities in CS, MG was the better map. When I bought my GPS V, I tried to buy MG along with it, but the great folks at tvnav.com recommended waiting. They understood that the CS update would be as or more comprehensive than MG, and with the $50 update, a better deal, too.

  6. Seems that "someone" has removed the line in the last paragraph about Bob that promised a CS all unlock for $50. I had actually emailed garmin cartography about this and was assured that we'd be able to get an all-unlock for $50. However, me thinks that we're about to get the ol' "Sorry about the typo on our website and the inconvience it might have caused. That'll be $100 please."

I don't think anyone could have tried this yet as it can't be done until the update ships (which garmin in now listing as 7/3/02).

  7. I noticed this last weekend, wondered about it briefly, then promptly forgot all about it. A little "D" appears at the bottom of the bar showing the strength of the signal lock for each sat. Then yesterday I came across a post mentioning how that cacher liked to get all D's in sat lock and a memory flashback was triggered. I checked Garmin's FAQ, Beginner's guide and GPS V manual today without success. Tried a couple searches here, but it's a tough topic to search for...

    Thanks for any help,

    TCC

This sounded too awful to be true, but we've just returned from backpacker.com and are *completely* depressed. Sheesh.

  9. Don't know the official details, but...

The V registers 2.5 mph faster than the speedo on our Xterra. Stock tires and wheels.

The V registers 1-2 mph different than the speedo on our Quest, but I don't remember whether it reads faster or slower.

Seems amazing to me. I mean, how far away are those satellites again???? ;-)

Yeah, no kidding! I kept reading about all of the *really* cool stuff folks were doing with their MeriGolds and a 128mb card. I had just about convinced myself that MeriGold was the way to go, but then realized, after all, that I wanted automapping and so I took the GPS V plunge. After driving around town with it for the last two days, I'm glad I did. It's truly incredible (around here anyway).

  11. Yeah, it's now tucked in the mount safe and sound. I was just a little nervous about pushing that hard on either the mount or the GPSR (both brand spankin' new), but once you two indicated that it was normal for it to require a bit of effort, I went for it.

Drove around town with it today. Man...talk about cool! I've got Tues and Wed off next week so I'm hoping to find my first cache then.

    thanks again

    Eric

  13. I couldn't find any info about version numbers at garmin's MetroGuide USA webpage (??? looking in the wrong places, I guess). I've found some not-so-old posts here that make it sound like 4.01 is the newest version.

But...I'm seeing some "4.03" versions of metroguide USA listed at ebay. Are these just typos? And if 4.03 is the newest, how old is 4.01?

    Thanks...

  14.

I just got the 4 inch windshield RAM mount. It came with lots of pics of other mounts, but no directions. Tried slipping it in from the side, but that was taking *way* too much pushing (of my brand new GPSR) for my comfort and the unit basically got stuck half way in. It didn't seem to really want to push in from the front either.

I figure the part that actually holds the GPSR is probably the same for all the RAM GPS V mounts. The longer central retaining arm looks like it should go on top, right?

Thanks for any help (and for not laughing icon_biggrin.gif )...

  16. Just remember...

You can buy the GPS V now and order the CS update from garmin. When it arrives, you get to unlock the same region of the update for free, BUT... at that time, you'll be offered an all-unlock of the CS update for $50.

I ordered a GPS V from tvnav.com last friday and received it yesterday (great folks at tvnav.com) and I figure it like this...

GPS V ($360) + CS update all unlock ($50) equals

    a GPS V deluxe for $410.

The garmin website is a bit confusing about the upgrade. Their tables list the all unlock upgrade as $100, but if you read the hypothetical situations they've included (the single region one about "Bob"), the very last line states that the CS all unlock is $50. This sounded too good to be true, so I emailed garmin about it and was assured that when my update arrives and I go back to unlock my same free region on the update, I'll have the chance to buy an all unlock for $50. And I guess if you don't do it then, you'll pay more to do it later.

  17. The GPS V ships with both a pc interface cable and a 12v adaptor cable. I've read that some units require a combination cable if you're gonna use both at the same time.

If I purchase a GPS V and want to connect it to a laptop in my car, can I use the two cables that the unit ships with (along with the laptop's own 12v adaptor) or will I have to buy the additional pc/power combination cable that garmin sells?

    Thanks,

    Eric
