  1. Sorry your first attempt went so poorly. Likely though not because of your inexperience, but poor planning on the cache placers part. Caches should only be placed on private property with owners permission. And it's helpful under those circumstances if the placer puts a note to that effect as well. Or says no need to trespass- to alert you to avoid the wrong way in. But do put some sort of note on the cache page and alert the owner privately to find out what they want done with the cache. Hopefully your second attempt will be more successful.
  2. K- enough. You are reading too much into this. It's the clear intent to make a sock puppet account that got my goat the most. It's transitory. If you looked at my profile tag you would see that you might be a bit off on the political leanings. ] The problem is that he used the Obamas middle name (Hussein). Supporters of the Obama tend to strip the middle name out when identifying him by name. Opponents like to include and emphasize his middle name. I kind of guessed that. But it could also be that the OP doesn't like Obama. It's not particularly emphasized in the name, after all. Frankly, I think the whole Hussein thing is silly. It's silly that people bring it up, and it's silly that people get offended when it's brought up. Treat the cacher like any other fake-logging sock puppet -- delete the logs and then ignore him. The name isn't even close to warranting action by Groundspeak, in my opinion.
  3. The Road Rage series and I Hate I-5 were all along that route- some of them are still up.
  4. Could happen. Brother in law spends a lot of time in Corvallis.
  5. Like I said, we are a pretty close knit caching community. Many people in Oregon socialize amongst the caching clubs. Looking at my cell phone, half of the numbers are geocachers- by their geocaching name. Your handle becomes part of your identity. That named looked clearly like it was picked to stir up controversy. For that reason it/the cacher caught my eye, and I looked at their profile closer. And saw what y'all did- someone who had set up an account at one point and just the other day *did* one caching run downtown. Something didn't fit. (I don't care much for sock puppet accounts, that sort of anonymity usually goes with stirring up trouble- visiting a cache and logging out coins, logging in caches that weren't visited, setting up a cache with something about it to make a point- location, title, whatever) And then I got to thinking about picking names and the geocaching policy. And if there was one. I don't see one on the site, I sent them an email to ask but haven't gotten a response yet, and so I opened up this discussion. Can I use obscenities? Names that are clear defamation of others race, religion or creed? Can someone use my legal name as their caching name? I would hope the answer is no to all of those questions, but I'm suspecting that the policy has not been defined and each would be judged separately.
  6. Guess I'd have to think about it a bit. It caught my eye because Salem is actually a pretty active and close knit geocaching community, never had seen it- hit a bunch of caches in one day (one of which was mine/I deleted the log already as the log entry was bogus/no signature on the log) and when I looked into it further (before physically checking my own cache)- I got the strong sense that it was an account put together to hide something, and that dimes to dollars was a fictitious caching run. The name seems clearly to have been picked to annoy people. But you're right, that's no reason to ban it. What's the issue with the account name? I mean, other than the fact that Obama is proving to be the worst thing that's happened to this country since it was founded?Politics aside- you mean anything goes? I never said that, I only asked what your issue was with the name.

  8. Pretty sure it's a sock puppet account, but still, doesn't sit well with me. Barack Hussein Obama Does Groundspeak have a policy addressing names?
  9. Having problems with my etrex legend- actually deader than a doornail. Have had it for 20 months and taken good care of it. Emailed Garmin and asked them if it was worth repairing ($99 flat fee) as it didn't last very long- they quickly emailed back and said they would repair free of charge. Kudos. I am one happy camper. And likely will upgrade to another unit in the next year and you can be sure it will be a Garmin.
  10. Might want to check out the local events near you where you can connect with someone who can give you a hands on lesson or two (perhaps an escorted caching adventure). I'm not very techno either, but figured out how to go paperless with an old palm I got off of ebay- researched the forums and found several step by step tutorials. Have fun.Good little unit.

    DC caching

Will be in the area for the inauguration, of course have to do a bit of caching while I explore. Looks like a lot virtuals. Any favorites to recommend? Will also be visiting family in Silver Springs Maryland and staying a few days in Baltimore. Many thanks.
  12. Wow- looks like I stumbled onto to something powerful. I have a small collection, mostly states I have cached in and any coin with peace symbols. How fitting that I came across this. I suspect this coin was meant for someone else, but I assure the messenger of peace that I will use this coin as a constant reminder to spread the word in action and deed. Many thanks. Shalom. I don't have this particular coin but here is a thread dedicated to it. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=194489
  13. Must be- the Imagine verses were printed in the flip as well. Could you tell me more about it? It's beautiful.
  14. Words of peace in different languages and another dove image on the other side Picked this up today- can't seem to spot the tracking number. Help please.
  15. I helped organize the Earthday CITO in our community this weekend. I had success by making a presentation to our local business association, and then going to other local businesses (that were not in the organization) and making a request for a discount for the products we were buying to supplement our supplies, buy food and small prizes. Asking for a discount goes over better than freebies. I had a brochure on geocaching that I brought with me. And a poster of our event. Oh, and I got a donation of a water color that one of our members made and auctioned that off so we will have seed money for our next event. I was pretty pleased with the outcome.
  16. YOU miss the point. This is where YOU think they came through. THEY said they did not cross a chain. Likely they came in another way. YOU clearly state you did not see them come in and were surprised by their arrival. I have no reason to believe they are lying (why the heck would they?) I have no reason to believe you are lying (same rhetorical question). YOU think it was plain as day which way they should have come in, and that they were knowingly cutting corners attempting to cross private property. THEY think they were entering in the manner they had been invited to. Private property caches happen all the time, all those dang lamppost micros in parking lots are example of caches on private property. Drop it. Both of you. And all the rest of us. It is a misunderstanding. All parties are at fault, none are at fault. As Mr. K said, it's a game- both parties offended each other in a way that neither intended and is not in the spirit of our game. Let's all be more careful in the future. When caching. And placing.
  17. This whole fiasco points to the responsibility of the cache owner in maintaining their caches- not just coming up with a seemingly clever spot, but monitoring the logs carefully and adjusting the cache as necessary in response to the activity. Many of us use caching to explore unfamiliar areas- *invited* by the cache owners so to speak to visit an area perhaps we would never have seen. We need to have some trust in the cache owner- that they placed the cache responsibly, and hopefully that they placed the cache in a spot worth visiting.
  18. For a Friday visit, just email your intent, no major hoops. The garmin event is late january- the 26th I believe.
  19. I have Tuesday/Wednesday off work, so I'd be happy to head up there with you if you want to go one of those days. I have an extra pair of snowshoes you can use. I've been to the Ape Cache a couple of times, but always through the tunnel, so this would be a new experience for me. How much expertise would it take to do this? I have never used snow shoes, but cross country ski and can handle a decent hike, could get my hands on snow shoes and maybe take a practice run before hand- would love to tag along.
  20. I went the Palm m500 ebay route/ good price for something that gets knocked about out in the field. I use MacCMConvert to convert my queries and cachemate on the palm. Check out the Palm m500 on eBay. You should be able to get one for $30.00, including the shipping. The monochrome screen is easy to see in bright sunlight, something that cannot be said for some of the color models.
  21. Out here I see people do that regularly as they get ready to post a new cache.... seeding their new cache so to speak. I've already answered that question to the best of my knowledge. I'd have to say that in the long run putting several TBs into one cache isn't the best idea. I started discussing that but was told I wasn't answering the question. OP keeps getting things back on topic.
  22. Sounds like you are off to a great start. Nice area. Creative. Close monitoring. Count me in.
  23. Not sure what you are asking. I did the same thing- loaded the program on my sons Peecee and then loaded onto my GPS. Everything works fine from there. I use Load my Tracks for the GPS to load the pocket queries, but the mapping program works without any translator.
  24. Lincoln City Oregon has been very active hiding caches that introduce visitors to their attractions. They held an awesome caching event yesterday that tied into a veterans celebration :GC12T0A. Day ended with everyone who participated receiving a trackable coin. Very nicely done.
