  1. If you want a good unit that can handle tree caverage, make sure it has a helix antenna. Garmin has several, GPS60 series, 76 series etc. The Rhino also has a helix antenna in it. We teach GPS to educators and other professionals. We deal with a Garmin dealer who gives a very good rate to schools and govt agencies and S&R groups. Usually it is 30% list. Email me and I will send you the info egorny@gis2gps.com
  2. If it was a new unit, you should of gotten the following: GPSMAP® 60Cx unit 64 MB microSD Belt clip USB interface cable MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager CD Lanyard Owner's Manual Quick-Start Guide The screw is for a knob that holds the Belt Clip. They usually come already attached to the unit. Belt clip is great for using with clipboards. Ed
  3. We are a group of educators who teach other educators about GPS and GIS. 4. National Geographic has a nice program that lets you import the data from the GPS unit and then export it to a txt file that you can open in Excel. It works on mac and PC, USB or serial. Lists about $25.00 but you can find it for around $20. It is called GPS USA by National Geographic Ed
  5. The GPS60 Map is good if you get the addtional TOPO or Street software for the unit. Otherwise the map version is lacking a lot of detail. In terms of storage, I can upload a little more then 1/2 of Illinois with the topo data based on the memory that comes with the unit. Ed
  6. The GPS 60 for education runs $134.99. comes with USB cable, software etc The eXpolorist 100 list for $109.00. - not sure how cheap you can get it. $1,000 more ?? Since we need the computer connection and want the good antenna system the 60 covers all our issues.
  7. I taught with Magellans for years before they changed to the eXplorist. We taught classes mostly to teachers. We loved the SporTrak and the Meridians which are out of production. Magellan sent me a 210 to play with and since we teach GIS as well we had some requirements the new series just didn't have/address. So we switched to the Garmin GPS 60 series and we love them. They met all our requirements etc. In teaching them to teachers, we found them easier then the Magellan use to be. They do come with the built in games the teachers actually enjoyed trying as well. We found that depending on the unit, they have software that lets you do live screen captures which you can save for manuals etc. We also had students and teachers who were taught on the SporTrak and they in general preferred the new Garmins. Great screen size, helix antenna etc. We do have a Garmin dealer we work with that extends a nice discount to educators and schools. Email me if you want the forms for him. In general he gives you govt prices. egorny@gis2gps.com Ed
  8. We teach classes for educators and use the GPS 60. Excellent unit, helix antenna, large screen, great software which will interface with Google Earth if it is installed on your computer, usb or serial port connectors, come with USB cable. We experience about 24 hours on a set of batteries. We like the buttons on the front and at the bottom as well as the larger screen. We have 55 of them and never had any issues with any of them hope this helps ed
  9. I noticed you are a computer instructor. If you work for a school district/university, I have a Garmin dealer who extends a 30% discount for Garmin units and then you can also get the rebate if it applies in Canada. Send me a PM and I will send you the contact form egorny@gis2gps.com 30% brings it down to $337.49 and then as I remember $50 off for the rebate. His shipping is very reasonable. ed
  10. TOPO streets and 3D Views is discontinued since about June/July 2006 Ed
  11. There is another way that is even easier. If you haven't updated MapSource from Garmin, goto: http://www.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp I just noticed they updated it on Sept 21. Download and install and all you have to do is download the data and go to View and there is a menu item to view in Google Earth. Ed

  14. Yes I have the straight data cables, they are the serial port type (the SporTrak never had a USB one). Ed
  15. We teach classes to teachers using the GPS 60 series. They are gret units. One difference between it and the Legend is the type of antenna. The GPS 60s have a helix antenna and the regular Legend has a patch antenna. The helix will pick up a lot better under trees etc. In terms of screens, the GPS60 and the GPS 60 map are basically the same, the only difference is that the GPS 60 Map does have basic features mapped in them and you can add additional detail with the mapping software from Garmin (which is more expensive) You mentioned a one time purchase, the GPS 60 Map is a good choice you can aways get the software later. Ed

  19. Magellan stopped production the Meridian Series in Jan. 2006 Everyone is trying to clear the old stock. The SporTrak (all versions) stopped production late 2005 Ed Both were grest units with helix antennas etc - too bad the eXplorist didn't maintain the same components.
  20. You mention all overe the place. That should be taken in consideration. Some units you have to laod the areas you are going to. Others have the whole USA in them. Also a Garmin person mentioned to watch the types of drives. Some are mechanical and some are flash (no moving parts). He actually asked what tyepe of car did my daughter have (she is starting the accounting world soon) because of the vibration. I have the RoadMate 760 (upgraded from a 700) a Garmin 2720 and a Garmin 330c. The RoadMate is great, has the whole USA on it but a mechanical hard drive. I decided on the 2720 (sweet unit) has a beanbag mount that sits on the dashboard, flash drive, whole USA and a few other tricks. My daughter has the 330c (graduation present) and loves it. Simple, flash drive, whole USA, speaks and is smaller which she wanted. Only suggestion after having these: flash drive and the whole USA and one that speaks Ed
  21. Another piece of software is Nantional Geographic's TOPO GPS USA. Runs about $25 usually you can find it for $20.00. We use it in classes to download GPS data (you can select waypoints or tracks or both). You can select the format you want and then export it to a txt file that brings it really nice into Excel. Ed
  22. We teach GPS in Illinois and we do have a contact that usually gives 30% off Garmin units for teachers and schools. Send me a message if you want the forms we have set up with him. egorny@gis2gps.com Ed
