  1. We teach GPS and GIS to teachers in the Midwest. We do have a Garmin dealer that gives us a very good discount to teachers. I can send the forms with the prices if you are in the teaching profession. Just send me an email, your name and school and I will send you the forms as attachments. ed

  3. I teach GPS and GIS. In our classes we teach how to tie GPS and GIS together. We use an ESRI product called ArcVoyager Special Ed for schools which is about 90% ArcView but free to schools. You could also to the same thing with ESRI's ArcExplorer. Is it work, yes but you can tie information to the points you save and make it a seperate layer. You can also make your tracks another layer. We teach also how to map the gps on topographic maps as well as air photos. Gives a lot of possibilities for educational projects. If you want to map it on USGS topographic maps, look at National Geographic's TOPO! GPS USA. They just updated it in June. It will interface with serial or USB units, and also works with MACs. TOPO comes with the the 3 of the 5 levels of maps. You can download the data and see it right on the maps with pretty good detail. The software runs $25.00. If you want real good views, which is level 4 and 5, the state set runs about $99.00 - ouch. The first three levels are pretty good. GIS does require some work. But it gives you several opportunities. Below is an example of a screen shot of ArcView. The green dots are the waypoints, the yellow are tracks. Can't seem to get the image to show - sorry Ed

  8. I had the same question. I contacted National Geographic ( I am a reseller of this software for class use) and they said at this time the answer is no. I tried it using TOPO! streets but it will not communicate. They said they will be looking into it and I know they just got their first eXplorist to see if they can. Ed
  9. We teach GPS and GIS to teachers in ILL. We have been using the Magellan series since the 315. We also used NG's software to download the point and the breadcrumbs. Since the merrygold is out of production, Magellan sent me the new 210 to test. It is true it is similar to a Meridian Gold in terms of its screens. It does have the USB connection now as well. The problem is, the 210 does connect to the computer, but the software GPS USA doesn't. It keeps saying the Com Port is being uded by another application. Since it doesn't have the eXplorist settings, I am using the meridain settings. The com port works with the gold and the software, not the 210. I tried both USB file transfer mode as well as just the power mod on the 210 - no luck. As soon as I switch back to the gold, it works. Any one have any luck in getting GPS USA with the eXplorist series? We use it since we want to download the landmarks and the breadcrumbs seperately into a txt file that lets us then bring it into excel so we can use it with ESRI GIS software. thanks for any suggestions. Ed Gorny
  10. Jamie, JB said he would contact you. Shipping is usually very fair. Did he contact you? I cc him on the email I sent you. Ed
  11. NFA - I emailed a connection for teachers. Did you get my email? Ed G
  12. I deal with Magellan as a teacher and I did find one person who is good at asking questions and getting answers! The Meridian Gold's firmware can handle up to 512 without a problem (according to them) and they suggest "The only two SD cards that will work are SanDisk and Toshiba" I use sandisk and they are great - circuit city is always having rebates for them ed
  13. FYI - In the Garmin manuals it says: "Products sold through online auctions are not eligible for rebates or other special offers from Garmin. Online auction confirmations are not acdepted for warranty verification. To obtain warranty service, or original or copy of the sales receipt from the orginal retailer is required..." ed
  14. National Geographic has a piece of software called GPS USA, http://maps.nationalgeographic.com/topo/gps.cfm We use it with classes we teach about GPS. From the PC side it is nice for downloading points into an excel or txt file. Costs about $20 if you look around etg
