  1. How about a four of a kind for 20 pts, and on the first day even? DB1784 DB1432 DB0408 DB0595 No bonus points on these ones. DB1432 I could only get within about three feet due to the fence and the nearby Border Patrol agent; hope that still counts. Uh oh, looks like I'm confused. I'm using PID's here, is the contest Designations? Looks like I'll have to rethink my cards.
  2. I don't use the gc website much for bm .loc's; but I do I have an idea. If you download a .loc after you've logged (are those logs included in .loc's?), you could search or run a macro thru GSAK to find your logs and/or a keyword in them and then flag as found. I just manually update them as found in GSAK. Also, from My Account on gc; you can select all logs you've made by benchmark - might help find the ones you've logged.
  3. I dunno, but in my county we've got an old courthouse and lots of newer ones. Has there ever been a flood in the area and the town and/or courthouse moved? Coordinates just off or error?
  4. Major poison oak just last week is my worst. I'm pretty susceptible and this was my worst ever. I saw the plants and think I'd just grazed one or two on my calf. Within two days, I was oozing really bad and even transferred a little to my junk. Ouch!! After three days had to make the trip to the doc, Benadryl and Calamine just weren't cutting it. Big black area about 4 inches square on my calf. Doc and nurse both said it looked like a third degree burn ( I concur) $52 worth of prescriptions later (that's just my copay) and I'm on my way to recovery. Junk is totally healed and calf is on the way, black area to less than a square inch now.
  5. Looks about the size of a monument cover. Are those initials and a number with a Star of David on the left? Maybe SDK 19713?? or the year 1983? I found this for Minnesota surveyors. http://www.aelslagid.state.mn.us/roster.html http://www.aelslagid.state.mn.us/LSLicNum.html http://www.aelslagid.state.mn.us/LSLastName.html Might be on one of those lists, but I couldn't find it. I also google the three phrases, but didn't get anywhere.
  6. What you seem to think is the station mark looks a little bit less than square. I don't know if it is within the standards of the day to call it square or not. You have to find the lettering to be certain of the correct stone. Your picture 16 looks like it has an arrow pointing to the lower right from the upper left. Could this be one of the stone reference marks?
  7. 1 Change to reach description to "Go on up the crick a bit till you see the pink flamingoes, you can't miss it" Uh, you been hitting the bottle again, Jim? 2 Somene playing a joke, or there's a local surveyor with really bad eyes and someone's trying to help him out? 3 From wikipedia - In geography, a knoll is a small natural hill. 4 It's kinda similar for me here in OC. I think developers have no respect for BM's and just plow 'em under. OCS seems to have a pretty good system of their own and don't worry/care about NGS???
  8. Thanks for adding my few finds to the list. I've only submitted one to NGS, but when it comes up I'm JRM (what are the odds I'm the only one?)
  9. OK, I submitted it as follows. Changes to description as follows. The city of El Toro is now the city of Lake Forest and the community of Leisure World is now the city of Laguna Woods. Canada Avenue is now Lake Forest Drive. Both reference marks recovered in good condition. All marks have a tilde over the N in CANADA. I didn't put a comment about the size of the median because the median is about 15 feet wide but the mark is about 2 feet from the edge. I also put don't know for the GPS. I'll leave those details for the pros to decide. It did not allow me to use the ~ character which I was using for the tilde. Klemmer, I agree with the clunkiness of the OCS site, but I run into sooo many of their benchmarks that I've started using it and Waymarking them. Thanks all.
  10. What's it take to make the list?
  11. Thanks all I went this evening and found the RM's very easily. I forgot my camera, so had to use the cell phone camera to get pics. I was already going to try and find the RM's beore submission, I was just looking for some help on the best way to submit. I'll still probably be ruminating on it for a day or two before submitting. As far as satellite usability - are you talking about virtually nothing visible above 15 degrees from horizon all the way out? Or what radius? This overpass is pretty exposed, but there is a 7-8 story building about 600 feet away. Klemmer, Thanks for the invite, I'm sure we'll be in touch. I've noticed many of your recoveries in the area. I've found one that you discovered nearby that USPSQD couldn't. I find OC, particularly my southern OC, seems to have no respect for BM's they seem to be destroyed without reporting. Have you found a way to get details of OCS data in bulk? Like paperless, or do you have to look them all individually? It becomes very time consuming.
  12. I regularly hunt game while hunting caches; in those cases, I'm definitely carrying. Many animals have made it to my dinner table that way. Due to where I live, much of the area around me = carry is verboten even if one could obtain that difficult to obtain permit. It is the PRK afterall.
  13. My local favorite here in OC is cache_in_pocket He often makes custom containers that make me say "How did he come up with that?" while scratching my head. He certainly makes it a point to have good, interesting caches. I tend to see a lot his, because I think he only lives a couple of blocks from me, though we've never met.
  14. OK, I found a benchmark; DX4388 with no submissions since monumented in 1973. Geocaching BM Page A lot has changed in Orange County and I'd like to make a submission for this one. I was a bit surprised to find this, as about 10-15 years ago, the freeway in this area was massively widened; like from 6 lanes to I think 23. This is at the point where it all comes back together, and I guess the bridge hasn't changed. A fair amount of the description has. Here's the station description with some edits and my comments in parentheses DX4388'DESCRIBED BY CALTRANS 1973 (ARA) DX4388'THE STATION IS LOCATED ON THE TOP OF A CONCRETE BRIDGE CROSSING DX4388'OVER INTERSTATE ROUTE 5 ABOUT 1.5 MILES WEST OF THE CITY OF EL DX4388'TORO LAKE FOREST ( El Toro never was a City, and now it IS the City of Lake Forest) AND ABOUT 1 MILES NORTH OF THE COMMUNITY OF LEISURE WORLD LAGUNA WOODS VILLAGE ( A little more complicated here. Leisure World was a community that has just been renamed Laguna Woods Village. LWV is a gated senior community; it and just a little bit more area is now the City of Laguna Woods. I'd be inclined to put the city, but is also about a half mile East of the City of Laguna Hills. Generally, when referring to cities, are they using PO's or City Hall locations?) DX4388' DX4388'TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE INTERSECTION OF INTERSTATE ROUTE DX4388'5 AND EL TORO ROAD, IN THE CITY OF EL TORO LAKE FOREST ( A little tricky, I think that point is at/near the border of the three cities mentioned) , PROCEED NORTH ON DX4388'INTERSTATE ROUTE 5 FOR 0.9 MILE TO THE CANADA AVENUE (Renamed at some point) LAKE FOREST DRIVE OFF RAMP. DX4388'TAKE THE OFF RAMP 0.25 MILE ( This has probably changed to ~.5 mile as the off ramp roll out was lengthened) TO THE INTERSECTION OF THE OFF RAMP AND DX4388'CANADA AVENUE LAKE FOREST DRIVE. TURN LEFT, NORTHWEST, ONTO CANADA AVENUE LAKE FOREST DRIVE AND DX4388'GO 0.2 MILE TO THE CANADA AVENUE LAKE FOREST DRIVE OVERCROSSING AND THE STATION SITE DX4388'IN THE MEDIAN STRIP. DX4388' DX4388'THE STATION MARK IS A STANDARD CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS DX4388'(CADH) DISK STAMPED CANADA (It's actually got a tilde ~ on the N, see my log picture) 1973 SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE MEDIAN DX4388'AND IS FLUSH WITH THE MEDIAN SURFACE. IT IS 5 FEET EAST OF THE DX4388'WEST END OF THE BRIDGE, 2.5 FEET NORTH OF THE SOUTH CURB FACE OF DX4388'THE MEDIAN, AND IS 12 INCHES HIGHER THAN THE TRAVELED WAY. (Being that it was night in the median of a 3 lanes each way street, I didn't take time to verify these measurements. To the amateur eye, they seemed close enough.) DX4388' DX4388'REFERENCE MARK 1, A STANDARD CADH DISK STAMPED CANADA NO 1 1973, DX4388'IS SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE SIDEWALK ON THE BRIDGE AND IS DX4388'FLUSH WITH THE SURFACE OF THE SIDEWALK. IT IS 18 INCHES NORTH OF DX4388'THE NORTH CURB FACE, 60 FEET EAST OF THE WEST END OF THE BRIDGE, DX4388'ABOUT 3.5 FEET SOUTH OF THE NORTH EDGE OF THE BRIDGE, AND IS THE DX4388'SAME ELEVATION AS THE STATION. DX4388' DX4388'REFERENCE MARK 2, A STANDARD CADH DISK STAMPED CANADA NO 2 1973, DX4388'IS SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE MEDIAN AND IS FLUSH WITH THE MEDIAN DX4388'SURFACE. IT IS 58 FEET EAST OF THE WEST END OF THE BRIDGE, ABOUT DX4388'1 FOOT NORTH OF THE SOUTH CURB FACE OF THE MEDIAN, ABOUT 6 FEET DX4388'SOUTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF CANADA AVENUE, AND IS THE SAME DX4388'ELEVATION AS THE STATION. DX4388' DX4388'HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK 1.28 METERS I didn't look for the RM's, but will seek them out soon in daylight and try to get pictures of all. From knowing the intersection, the likelyhood of finding 1 or both RM's has a high confidence value in my head. For my submission, I would like to put something such as go to is adequate/ or sufficient with the following changes, listing what I have described above. Or, might it best be described as at the bridge of Lake Forest Dr over I-5 in the city of _____ ? Gotta figure out that border. Can someone give me a little help or tips on how best t word this and complete the submission? Thanks
  15. I'll give it a go. It might take me until Sept to figure out the rules. Then, it might take awhile to get a hand together. Can we declare high or low? Ha!
  16. Good info and links. But I still can't get geodetic info to show on the SD Co map. In OC I get it to work fine, they just show up on the map with geodetic checked. How did you tie HK to Kuehmsted? Personal knowledge, or did you know how to find geodetic records for the area and he showed up?
  17. I looked up the half dozen or so of these that I recorded at topozone and all but one seem to be right on the red dashed lines. Those are property or land grant lines? Seems I've found a series of well documented boundaries. What about section and township and ranges? I couldn't find a key to the markings on the website. jwahl Great info, where did you get such detailed info? Is that available online. Also, I don't know why the section? markings seem so square and orderly in some places and then all of sudden take on an irregular shape. That is what is happening in this area. Here's an example of a witness post I found on one of those transitions Topozone Witness Post
  18. HK was the only labelled mark I found. There were some round concrete monumnets, some square. The concrete monuments have a rougher finish than I've seen on NGS monuments. I also saw a couple of about 1 inch pipes, concrete filled with a nail and washer; still no label. Probably 90% of the ones I found were along fencelines, usually near a fence corner; so property boundaries seem most likely to me. As you can see< HK is at a fence corner. I just was a bit surprised to see the witness posts used.
  19. While staying in the Jamul area of San Diego County, CA (SE area of county) I was looking for DCO333 SD 114 SD CO DC0333 I couldn't find it, but I did see a witness post over yonder. So, I wandered over; hoping it might be a RM, or the BM itself. But it was something entirley new. Here's the view of the witness post. The post seems generic to me, no agency listed. After a couple of minutes of work weeding, I spied HK So, who/what was/is HK? Landowner, surveyor, some kid who found the wet concrete? My coordinates were N 32 39.094 W 116 51.455 elevation 800.52 ft I couldn't find it in the NGS database; didn't expect I would. I tried to look it up on the San Diego County Surveyor website, but couldn't find my way around their website well enough. In my travels over the next few days in the same area (~3 miles), I found many other witness posts with markers of some kind, concrete monuments, concrete filled pipes with nails and such. My guess is that local ranchers want really well defined boundaries, but it seemed odd to me that so many witness posts were used. Often only a hundred yards or so apart. Any ideas on what's going on? TIA for any help.
  20. I'm not really bagging on your cache. Just want to point out that a blue reflector would indicate the presence of a fire hydrant nearby. A firefighter without superb knowledge of the area might be distracted. A more appropiate reflector color might be better.
  21. I've been planning one of those, with a special TOTT stashed nearby. I'm planning on calling the TOOT a Labrador Retriever. Can you quess a sport I like and the dog that goes with it?
  22. There is an urban one very near to my house. Not firetacks, but a spot where you point your flashlight and get a blinking code of lights back to you for coordinates for stage 2 where the cache is. Hidden by a very imaginative hider near me. He also has one using morse code. I just gave away the cache secret, so I won't give you the cache name or waypoints. I haven't done any other specific night ones, I'll have to give it a try.
  23. OMG! Trying to log finds this evening and pages are literally taking minutes to load, if at all. And it's not my end.
  24. cox.net and as I mentioned, two came through just fine at 12:41 am. Now going on 7+ hours with no Pq's
