  1. Yesterday I found a GeoGem that was marked as lost. I found it in a completely different area than it was last logged in. Looking at the map associated with this gem, it only has had two stops. When I logged it as 'Found in a different location', there were no provisions that I could see to document the cache that I retrieved it from. I'm making a road trip plan for next week just so I can place this gem and get it moving again, but I also fail to see just where I can log it as to what cache I will place it in.

This is my first time doing a trackable. I have read the 'Trackables' page more than once, but there is no mention that I can find of how to mark the locations. I also found a pathtag yesterday that I need to log, but they don't seem to be in the GC database. I guess I will have to log into pathtag.com for that, but for now, I want to get the GeoGem figured out first.

So, How do I log the locations so that they will show up on the maps?

  2. I was out at our local disc golf course last Tuesday checking on some things as we have had some problems with people driving where they should not be after it snow's and they had knocked one of our baskets out of the ground anyway I saw a young man digging around the bottom of one of our baskets so I stopped and asked him if I could help him.

He laughed and said he was looking for a geocache well I knew a little about geocaching from a fellow disc golfer so we started talking and I found out he was having trouble finding it, he told me the name of the GC so I then knew it was my disc golfing friend that was the CO so I gave him a call after they talked the young man thanked me and was off to find it.

So it really got my interest up and I looked up geocaching and wound up here so I did a search and found a bunch right here in town so the next day after work I was off to "West Wind Stumper" with my car GPS but I could not find it so my disc golfing friend showed up and gave me his GPS and with-in a few minutes I had found it.

So in a 24 hr period I went from a muggle to a geocacher and this last Saturday my 2 sons ages 10 and 26 and my grandson age 9 and my granddaughter age 2 whent geocaching and found 15 CG's.

    We are hooked!!!!!!!

    Welcome to 'Muggle's Anonymous'

    Hello Tony1959, I've been unmuggled for 63 days...:D

  3. I'm surfing eBay looking for ideas for fun cache containers and I stumble across a whole lot of GC.com stuff with the trademark logos and website name. Is this sanctioned? I'm wanting to put stuff together for a cache, and I'm considering putting a Travel Bug Decal on my rig.

I thought the bar coded travel bug decal was only available through GC, but there is a seller out there who seems to be selling anything I can find to buy here. I haven't compared prices to see if she buys it then resells it, but if she is a sanctioned seller of GC merchandise, shouldn't it be stated on her sales pitches?

Not sure, and I haven't searched for "Geocaching" on Ebay in ages until just now. I do know this 100 "easy to hide" micro container seller needs to be banned though.

    Look here for example.

  4. Cool

What about the log book? Would you rather a notebook of some sort (spiral bound) or the templates that you can print off?

I like to take time to enjoy a cache, meaning I like to scan other entries. Log books are neat because I read an entry made by someone who isn't even a geocacher. They were out lizard hunting and found the cache, checked it out, made an entry and put it back.

It's nice to have a little more room than just putting your date and username.

  6. Haha to me that's all required, or at least should be considered as such. I'm talking more on the creative side.

Other than what every cache should have in the first place, what makes you go wow?

A creative and clever hiding spot, something more than leaves and pine needles kicked over it.

Good swag is nice, but I prefer a muggle free clever hiding place. That's my Wow factor! - A dry log is also a plus.

  7. If you put out a new cache and are worried about the potential damage to it note in the cache description so people know not to man handle it open. Or make the container obvious that something special is needed to open it up (special manipulation or what not).

If it requires a trick of sorts to open it, wouldn't it be good to list it as a puzzle cache?

  8. I hadn't thought about the D/T stats.

I'm having fun by trying to make a ripple effect on the map - working on all the caches closest to me and moving outwards, like a dog marking it's territory. Problem though is that I find the rural caches more rewarding.

    - So many Caches, so little time...

  9. After getting a taste of geocaching I've decided to start leaving some of my gemstone specimens in certain caches that are truly unique or that I found very rewarding as a find. I put it in a ziploc with a note on the bag saying it's from my collection.

After years of working in the Forest Service, National Park Service & the gemstone industry, I had naturally become a Rockhound. Over time of working the Tucson Gem show and spelunking for specimens, I have accumulated several pounds worth of semi precious stones. Some were purchased, many were dug out of the ground by me.

Currently I'm leaving natural, polished turquoise stones that have been drilled for stringing. When I run out of that I'll move on to the garnet stones I collected (looks like buckshot), Staurolite I pulled out of a cliff wall in Hondo Canyon in New Mexico, opal from Coober pedy, out of tolerance stones from gem shows, etc. etc. All of these stones are of value to me and I like the idea of spreading them around for others to have. Eventually, I'll work my way up to the beryl crystals.

  10. I like the sense of adventure and exploration.

There is a unique feeling of gratification when any cache is found, almost like belonging to a secret society filled with individuals I've never met, but might someday which will be another sense of accomplishment.

Prowling around through some new forests being stealthy.... It's like I'm 17 again! - WITHOUT being chased by the police!

  11. This is the concern, I logged a DNF, then found it on a later trip.

So, would the proper thing be to delete the previous DNF or leave it even after logging later as having been found.

I did this once already, then started seeing all the negative sentiments about those who do not log DNFs.

I found one today that I couldn't find weeks ago, but thought it better to find out what is the protocol, if any, about deleting the first log.

As far as my profile goes, If I have a DNF, I will not let it go until I find it unless it's been muggled or something. But it's hard to have that big blue face staring at me, taunting me... I want to eliminate them and replace them with the Golden Smiley.

...so what's up? Is it okay to delete the DNF log once it's been found?

  12. It's the baby boomers and in all to short a time we will be gone. The future depends on how well we grow the sport with our kids and grandkids. How many of the current members are Baby Boomers? 1 here..

On the issue of MIA's, cant the powers to be do some software data analysis and automatically clear out the caches that have not been active (found/logged) in XXX amount of time? This way there would be no issues about the NA problem. Like, if a cache has not been logged in the past 12 months, automatically NA it... (I'm not saying 12 months is the exact time, just some number determined reasonable)

This might really clean up the data base and open up areas where saturation is an issue. Just a thought!

No way could I ever support this. My Cherry Top cache Was placed on 6/3/07, found on 7/22/07 and found again on 11/7/08. That's it. No DNFs. No NMs.

Your system would have had it automatically archived a year ago. That's just plain wrong. I have reason to doubt that the cache has any problem except that most don't want to walk four miles for a single cache.

BULLSEYE! I'm a newb at this but I'm enjoying the heck out of it when I can! It gets me and the kid out of the house. More importantly, the country caches are the best for providing exercise in a healthier environment. When I map over a city, there are so many caches that the roads can't be seen. Of course, I HAVE to find those that are nearby (kinda like marking my territory with smileys), but the longer trek type caches are the most rewarding for me in many ways.

  13. Something I didn't do that I wish I would have done was to go check them out first!

I bought a Garmin eTrex legend on the net. It was cheaper than at the store, but the font is so tiny I have to bring reading glasses just to see it. The contrast and light settings just don't bring enough clarity to the screen.

In the future, I will go to the stores and examine the screens and functions first, then shop on the net for the model I have decided to go with.

My Garmin works great, but if I had done my Due Diligence first, I would have popped for a better model. These devices aren't cheap, but I would rather spend a little more than be unsatisfied and have saved a few bucks. :)

  15. I'm a hunter. I bowhunt deer and elk, I rifle hunt bear.

ANYBODY is allowed in the parks and forests anytime of year. Just because it's one of the hunting seasons doesn't mean we hunters own the place. Personally, I will not take any shot unless I can not only see what I'm shooting at, but can also see the kill zone. Most hunters are ethical but there are always some loopy ones that shoot at movement. Although I'm against blaze orange and don't have to wear it in Oregon, I think it would be wise for the geocacher to wear some.

If you feel the need to do something 'personal' HAHAhaaaaaa!! Look around first! I had to cough once just as a couple were about to indulge in some ...romance!

Yeah, we might get frustrated if somebody walks through our hunt, but hey, you have as much right to be there as I do.

  16. Thanks for the replies and tips!

Triangulation does seem to be the answer here. I'm fairly good at tracking animals, but never considered tracking a human!

If the accepted margin of error is as you have indicated, then it does add a little more gratification when the cache is found...

    Thx all!

  17. Not being real familiar with using a GPS, I get mixed signals from my Garmin.

It will tell me (for example) the cache is 20' south. When I move 20 feet south, it now says 15' east. This can go on for quite a while and only once did I get a 0' reading implying I was right on top of it.

What is the standard for accuracy with these devices? Granted +/- 20 feet is no problem for finding my truck or campsite, but for hunting a microcache, it can be a problem. I spent an hour yesterday trying to pinpoint a microcache and now it's turning into an obsession with me to find this little bugger.

Is there any way I can improve the performance of my Garmin e-trex legend H?
