  1. wow-rhelt told me about all the hub bub-skimmed through most of the posts. to offer my opinion, unfortunetly, trigo has a very bad reputation in the butler, pa area. I've only met Trigo's DresselDragons once at one of my events and then saw them at Cabela's event and at Moraine Corners event. At Moraine corners I made sure to say hi to them since we didn't get to talk at all at Cabela's even though they were the table in front of ours. I'm on the shy side myself-but will talk to new people. I'm guilty of hanging out with people I know. For the events that I plan-we typically go around the room and introduce ourselves-have done meet and greet games (people bingo) etc. Had a great time at the ASP Geobash-met new people there as well as my friends from New York that travel down to my events. IMO-part of events is the meeting of people (new and familiar) besides the scheduled activity whether cito, service project, or just plain fun. I think I'll make it a point to talk to at least 4 (why 4-because it's my lucky number) new people at events from now on. met one of the organizers for the moraine corners (kiteboy) at moraine cito event the weekend before and felt a little bit more confortable about attending this event. a lot of work went into this! enjoy this park and have caches hidden in this park. was happy to help this park. Obie-the park ranger is very supportive of the Butler Outdoor Club, which I and kiteboy are members of. reading the posts on the trigo yahoo group - I felt both bad that they wanted the date I had for the cito and also upset no one from the group contacted me since I'm the one that plans events for butler. I hope that dif. groups can work together. I'm registered into several dif. groups for that reason. Have a good relationship with Oil Region Cachers to the north of us. Looking foward to working with ohio valley geocachers on oh/pa geowoodstock and meeting some of the names I see in their forum. everyone has different reasons for caching-that's just the way it is. Some people like to see the smileys add up. Some people have to be FTF on everything that pops up. Some people like only the difficult ones. My uncle's friend that caches is wheelchair bound and due to the diversity of caches-he is able to find some- mainly the urban micros and virtuals. I'm an outdoor person so that's how I got involved with caching. love the caches that are in the woods and not too dif. for me to get to. also like caches that take me someplace new and interesting. I'd still be walking on the same trails if it wasn't for caching. the micros give me something to do when it's raining and I can typically get those by myself without too much danger or preperation. starting to learn some of the tech. stuff also-pretty scary! as a member/co-founder of BACON (butler area cachers) I hope that Trigo which isn't too far south of us and bacon can work together and have some great events. We may not all get along and we may not all see caching the same way-but we all have caching in common. I've seen this posted on, I believe, trigo's yahoo group-It's just a game!!!
  2. congrats. nice meeting you at the Allegany State Park geobash.
  3. got one of these coins for my dog zoie. she caches with me. haven't put it on her collar-she hates things on her collar. love the idea. when's the geo-cat coin coming out??
  4. talked to the ranger at Moraine State Park 4/22/07 during our cito and he said they found a meth lab on the North Shore. Luckily not where we were cleaning up but still scary to know these things are out there. I'd rather run into a bear then these people making this stuff. no wonder park rangers are armed.
  5. there's dialog on a local webforum about this subject. I've had some of mine move a bit esp. the nanos. one reported out in the open and the finder did put it back. the new ones I just put out the finder covered them better then I had-which is fine cause they are in muggle areas. it's hard to predict what the finder will do (cacher or not). I'm glad when the logs reflect the condition like out in the open etc. the logs that say tnlnsl tftc aren't real helpful to know that everything is okay. I'm guilty of this cause sometimes I can't remember which cache may need some owner's attention (have to start writing these things down). as owners of the cache we prob. just need to do maint. more often.
  6. we did more then just pick up trash yesteday. we also cleared out firerings. but we had trash removal as part of everything. not sure why it'd be a problem to do more at a cito. the park ranger was glad we spent some time in this area.
  7. happy Earth day right back! spent ours at Moraine State Park clearing out firerings made in the middle of the woods and right along the trail. also cleared out trash in this nature area. Got a whole truck load. what a beautiful day in Pa for a park clean up. Also saw lots of trash bags along our Pa roadways. A lot of groups out cleaning up trash.
  8. the site was most interested. It's great seeing classes on this. I'm bummed that I didn't see Moraine State Park listed. Being a former Girl Scout adult trainer-how do you think one would go about teaching a class? I would imagine I'd have to contact the park ranger? there's 3 great state parks: McConnell's Mills, Moraine and Jennings near me. Moraine has the majority of caches though.
  9. for my CITO's I try and plan a theme and fun activities as well. That's probably the Girl Scout in me. But Earth Day is environmental activities and the other clean up is a ducky theme-we're cleaning up a small waterway. Keeps it fun esp. for the kids.
  10. with an organized CITO-a park ranger or official from the area served typically checks in and there is verification that the area was cleaned. having a self check box like guyute1210 says-people will check cito because they found a few cig. butts-esp. if they know it means add'l smiley. And who knows if they really took trash out. wouldn't we just need to write about it in the log?? If the area is that trashed-post a needs maint. and that will alert the owner there's a problem. Not sure we really need a check box for something a good bit of us do anyway.
  11. Oil Creek SP has some very pretty waterfalls. I believe someone said there's 4 in the park. Gregg falls was very cool. McConnell's Mills also has some nice water falls. I haven't been to Buttermilk Falls yet but that is down Armstrong County way. Can't think of any more off hand.
  12. got mine ordered. if there's not here in time for Earth day, I have a clean up in June. Thanks for this thread on the forum!
  13. I'll add our Butler area cachers group. We're north of Pittsburgh, Pa by about 1 hr. we're pretty new just organized this month. We're a smaller group but active. have lots of events, CITO, and fun times. our IT guy is working on web pages for us but here's what we have so far: http://bacon.freeforums.org/index.php
  14. I'll add our little Butler, Pa group. We're not really organized, just got things going this month. It was a team effort naming it so far. So, we're BACON (Butler Area Cachers of Note) for the time being. Have a web forum at http://bacon.freeforums.org/index.php. our IT tech. and appointed president is working on web pages for the group. We have groups to our south which is TriGo and to our north Oil Region Cachers and North West PA cachers.
  15. I'm also a GS leader troop 418 and 673. The younger girls used geocaching for their bronze award and still cache from time to time. The older girls want to go out and find out what caching is all about. I'm Keystone Tall Tree Council which isn't promoting geocaching but a little to our north at Penn Lakes (Erie) they have a geocaching patch program. When we merge with Trillium, Penn Lakes, Talus Rock and Beaver/Lawrence Councils-maybe that will change and we'll see more geocaching and outdoors back into GS. For the Moraine SP CITO-there's about 3-4 girl scout troops and a boy scout troop coming. So-it's good to see an interest in the sport and community service on the scout level. I'm also part of the local outdoor club and working on stirring up interest there.
  16. from East Butler, Pa active member and geoevent coordinator for the Butler area.
  17. any updates on the 2007 cito coins? I'd like to purchase a couple but can't find them on the geocoin website. I don't know a whole lot about coins-do they only make so many? thanks.
  18. there will be one more for Pa not listed yet for 6/4 CITO of Alameda Park (Butler, PA).
  19. new to forums, have been caching for a couple of yrs-thought I'd try to post something. I'm from western Pa about 1 hr north of Pitts.
  20. Last year the girls in the troop used geocaching for their bronze award. They found a few, created a travel bug, and hid one in a local park that is still active. This year I have new girls that just learned about geocaching this weekend. They enjoyed it. They are old enough to do the GS IPP patch. Our council doesn't have any equipment so we have one resource person with enough GPS's to take a small group out. I did try the website for Lake Erie Girl Scouts and didn't see the requirements. If anyone could forward the requirements, contact information and ordering information for each level-brownie, junior, cadette/senior I would appreciate it. There are brownie & junior groups interested in caching in my service team area. How are other troops/service units organizing their caching? Does your council provide any equipment? I found last year that the girls did not like sharing mine and my co-leader's GPS's. After a few times out they began fighting over who's turn it was. The girls this weekend really enjoyed having their own GPS to use. Each one learned how to program and use it. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
