I saw this is another topic...

I agree Mastifflover. Looking over GeoidPS's recent posts, I wonder why he purchased it at all. I don't make it a habit to purchase items that I inherently hate, especially something in the $400.00 range.

Hi Timpat, thanks for the info. However, what I am really looking for are POI files that can be downloaded. I saw on the Garmin site that they had several for European countries... ie SpeedCams etc. Has anyone created anythning like that for the US?

Where can I find POI files for the US. The Garmin website list a couple, but they are for other countries.

I upgraded my 76Cx to the latest version of the firmware and everything seems ok. But I don't mind taking a chance because I have my 76C as a backup. If people did not update and "test" the beta version it would probably take a lot longer to get a final update from Gramin without feedback from the users. That being said, I would not be so willing to do so if I did not have my backup 76C.

PS can any of you with an x try to start the stopwatch, turn of the GPS,
turn it on and see if it still runs correct?
Started the stop watch, turned it off, turned it back on several minutes later, went to to stop watch and 0:00:00.

I noticed the same thing comparing my 76Cx to my 76C.
Here is a copy of a letter is sent to Garmin, and their reply.
I have noticed a "delay" in the alerts when using my 76Cx. As a small, unscientific test I put both of my units on my dash (76C & 76Cx), loaded with City Select 7. I picked a couple of Waypoints and started driving around the neighborhood. Observations: Alerts for making a turn the 76C would give the First Alert at 0.3 miles, the 76Cx would give the First alert at 0.2 mile. The second alert, the 76C would alert somewhere around 475 feet, the 76Cx would alert at around 225 feet.
This makes a noticeable difference when trying to navigate busy roads (especially in an unfamiliar area). The 76Cx does not give nearly as much time to change lanes or prepare for an exit. I also switched between my 128mb and 512mb memory. And yes there is a noticeable audible difference between the two units... the 76C being louder.
Are these issues that can or could be addressed in a firmware update?
PS: Any chance of getting the alarm clock back?

A user adjustable setting would be great... louder while driving, softer while hiking/hunting.

I agree with BurnieM regarding the memory issue. Until you connect it the PC you can't add anything to it anyway. So I my opinion it would be a waste of resources. I would much rather see the alarm clock back on the unit, or a volume or adjustable setting for the audible alarms.
One of my concerns with my 76Cx has been the "delay" or shortened time for the alerts while autorouting. I have contacted Garmin and this was their response:

So what does this mean??

I believe that it might be referring to 10,000 track points... not Waypoints. The Garmin GPSMap 60C and 76C series will manage 1,000 Waypoints and 10,000 Track Points.

I can't find any micro sd 1b in the US. I have seen a couple of sites from over seas, but nothing in the continental US.

I have only had my 76Cx for a few days but my initial impression is very favorable. I also have a 76C so I have been making some side by side comparisons between the two. I have been extremely happy with my 76C. When Garmin announced the 76Cx, the big attraction for me was the high-sensitivity WAAS-capable GPS receiver by SiRF. I was hoping that it would provide better reception in heavily wooded areas, for both Geocaching and hunting.
I have been thoroughly impressed with the reception of the 76Cx. I always get a lock while in my house. Right now it has a lock on 9 satellites, and if I were to put my 76C beside it, it would indicate “Lost Satellite Reception”.
There are a couple of things that I am hoping Garmin will fix with a firmware up:
1. Reinstate the Alarm Clock.
2. Increase the time for the alerts, or make it user adjustable.
3. Increase the volume of the alerts, or include a volume setting.
4. Allow waypoints to be stored on the Micro SD (without having to use POI Loader
But overall extremely happy with the unit.

Ok, now for my next dumb question... When I went to the Garmin POI download page it did not list any of the handheld units as being compatible. It did list units like the IQue and Street Pilots. Am I at the wrong place, or will this software work with my 76Cx?

Did you get latest update? I know that the latest update for my 76CX did address a memory issue. It is worth a try, before going through the RMA process.

Just brought it in and getting ready to upload some maps. Here are the two units (76C, and 76CX) sitting on the desk in my house.

For me the form factor of the 76C/76CX was more to my liking. Also, as stated above the ability to float and the tide table were also factors.

Well, since no one else was responding, I couldn’t wait any longer. I just picked up my 76CX. It is currently sitting outside on my picnic table "acclimating”. I think I might be able to leave it there for about 15 or 20 minutes, and then I am going to have to break down start testing it out. I have been using my 76C for about 7 months now and I am anxious to see how they compare. Stay Tuned.
